The site looks a little Spartan when you turn into it, a bit like an old concrete runway stretching off into the forest with outfits parked on each side of it. Keep driving round, though, and you come across the very different aspect of slightly secluded grassy glades, the bigger ones getting more sunlight. Staying for only three nights and not needing an awning we used the hard-standing for convenience.
The Covert covers part of the ground that was the training camp for the 7th Armoured Division in 1944 in the run-up to D-Day. Now it provides a very conveniently placed base for exploring mid-north Norfolk with Kings Lynn and Norwich both in reasonable driving distance, as well as the attractive north Norfolk coast stretching round from Hunstanton through Wells to Sheringham and Cromer.
Closer by are the smaller towns of Swaffham (market and auction as well as small museum), Watton (has a mid-sized Tesco which we thought was a closer option than the Waitrose in Swaffham) and East Dereham (much bigger Tesco Extra just beyond which is Greentrees Caravan/Camping business with an extensive range of new and used caravans as well as all the basics.)
If you’re into history you might like Castle Acre Priory around three miles north of Swaffham – surprisingly impressive ruins; Houghton Hall, just off the Lynn Fakenham Road, home of the first Prime Minister, Robert Walpole; or Burnham Thorpe, Lord Nelson’s birthplace, just round the coast from Holkham Hall, home of the Earls of Leicester.
We’ll happily use the site again.

We use this site for a quiet weekend break. Just turn in where you see the Army tank on it's plinth. Hardstandings are the old concrete roads from when this was a MOD training base, so if you want to put an awning up ask for a grass pitch. Super site good wardens and does accept non members.

The Covert is a very peaceful, secluded site surrounded by woodland full of deer, hares, rabbits and plenty of noisy birds - having been woken up at 5.00 am by a whole load of them - I just smiled to myself - glad to be in the wilderness - and went back to sleep!
There are no facilities on the site and it also lacks a shop - the nearest village apparently being a mile or two down the road. We bought all our provisions at the supermarket in Kings Lynn so we were prepared.
If you want peace and quiet (even the kids didn't bother anyone!) then this is the one for you - but if you want entertainment - you would have to go and look for it!

This site was perfect for us even though it was a BH weekend! We get around by bike and although the area isn't completely flat it was varied and interesting. The site itself was full but it seemed spacious nonetheless with more than enough space for the units parked on the hardstandings. The forest is fun to explore but hard work on bikes! Everyone should visit the Falconers Lodge for tea up the hill a short walk from the site - the food was delicious & the owners very knowledgeable about their Lodge, it's history & the area. We wouldn't have uses toilets, showers etc even if there had been any as we have facilities on board. The wardens were very helpful & friendly and even loaned us an OS map to make exploring the area by bike a bit more interesting. The good weather helped but I would certainly consider a visit out of the main summer season.

Spent three lovely nights on this site. It is a great place to stay. Lots of birds about. People were putting up feeders and getting some nice birds right in front of their units. Nice walks from the site. A really clean and peaceful place. Grass pitches tend to be a bit sloping so be prepared to use blocks. Note there are no toilets or showers on the site.

May 2005 We stayed here for 5 nights over the May Bank Holiday weekend. The site is easy to find and well signposted, being behind the 8th Army memorial. You just need to watch for fast moving traffic when slowing down and turning into the site, as the main road is very fast at this point.
The Wardens couldn't have been more helpful or pleasant on our arrival and they keep the site immaculate. They arranged to have a newspaper delivered daily for us and there was a Fish & Chip van who visited on the Friday night. I'm not sure if this is a regular event, but it was an unexpected bonus and a fun end to our stay.
We chose a pitch in a clearing in the forest itself, but there were other pitches available on the wide roads through the site and on the grass verges bordering them which. The pitches were well marked, were all roomy and well spaced out. You need your own facilities as there is no toilet block, but stands with drinking water, dustbins, waste water and chemical disposal areas were dotted around the site and no pitch was far from one of them. TV reception was not brilliant, but with the forest to play in there was no need to sit indoors.
Most children there seemed to have bikes and made the most of the wide concrete roads through the site, or played on the grass in the centre of the clearings, but they were not intrusive and although the site was quite full you did not feel crowded or hemmed in.
Favourite places nearby - the Ecocentre next to Waitrose in Swaffham go up the windmill & see the fantastic views, Swaffham for shopping, Watton, the Iceni Brewery to sample their range of ales, Oxburgh Hall (NT), East Dereham for shopping & railway enthusiasts. There is an information hut by the entrance with leaflets of places to visit and we made full use of it.
Verdict - one for our list of sites to revisit.

We stayed five nights at this CC site, The Covert at Swaffham, Norfolk. Located on (and in) the edge of Thetford Forest this is a beautiful site with hook-ups, but there are no toilet or shower facilities here.
Vans are pitched in forest glades or on hard standing around the perimeter of the site. Numerous Roe Deer and Munkjacks inhabit the forest - there are wonderful woodland walks of course. Excellent site wardens here. Lots of military and airforce 'things' to go see in this area plus a good selection of National Trust, steam engine, and garden attractions.
