I booked Kestrel Lodge after reading the previous reviews on this site. It didn't disappoint! We booked a regular pitch. There was plenty of room between tents and each had it's own fire pit. The facilities were clean and well maintained and the couple who run the site were very friendly and helpful. We had torrential rain but the covered area with picnic benches meant we could still cook and eat outside. The guy who manages the site made a decking doorstep for each tent to help reduce the mud, which was a very helpful touch. The site is in a stunning location with lots to do nearby and it has a lovely atmosphere. It's a really good find and we will definitely return.

Location: This is a scenic location beyond Bassenthwaite but that does mean that it is a bit of a way from local amenities and attractions. The access track is a bit bumpy in places and rough track for a significant length.
Facilities: The toilets and showers were clean but they are quite cramped and there is nowhere even in the disabled/ family room to change or dry a baby. It had undercover washing up sinks and a freezer to refreeze blocks. The wardens sold a few items from their hut during their limited opening hours. There are some undercover picnic tables in the middle of the campsite which are great if you need to eat outside and the weather is inclement.
Child friendliness: Our children loved exploring the wooded area at the corner of the campsite, running and making dens together. It was great to have this area for them to play in. There is also a field for ball games.
Overall: We enjoyed this back to nature campsite and the children loved playing in the woods but we wouldn't stay here if we were trying to visit lots of different parts of the Lake District.

We've just returned from a wonderful week at this site.
This site ticks all the boxes for us. No bells or whistles just the basics done extremely well: Spacious pitches, clean and warm toilet facilities, small shop for basics, washing up sinks and somewhere to freeze ice packs.
What makes this site stand out is the atmosphere. It's out of the way, so quiet and peaceful. The staff were so accommodating and regularly did the rounds checking in with campers. A relaxed pace and plenty of opportunities for walking. We came home tired from all the fresh air and activities and smelling faintly of smoke.
(Beyond the site we would highly recommend climbing at King Kong in Keswick, Via Ferrata, and kayaking from Nicol's End marina)

Just spent a lovely weekend here at Kestrel Lodge with friends.
The campsite is the perfect size, big enough that you're not on top of one another and small enough that even at the far end of the campsite like we were, it wasn't too far for the midnight loo break!
The toilets and showers were beautifully clean and well appointed, despite the full campsite with many kids on site.
The other facilities were great too; the undercover dining area and fire pits dotted around, plus the bits and bobs in reception in case you forgot something.
The owners were very friendly and happy to help. If you fancy a walk, take a look at the list on their website as the directions are well written and there's a few which go straight from the campsite.
If you fancy eating out, the Sun Inn pub in Bassenthwaite is at the bottom of the road, only a 25 minute walk. The food is good, real ales available and dogs are allowed inside.
In a nutshell, we really enjoyed ourselves and are working out when we can next come back! If only to say hi to Mo the shetland pony, and the guinea pigs!

A massive thank you to everyone at Kestrel Lodge campsite in the Lake District. We'd thoroughly recommend the site to anyone and everyone (although I'd hate for it to get too busy as I'd be cross if we couldn't get in!) The site itself is beautiful and the facilities are spotless. The family who own it are really friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. And its in a beautiful area - near to lots of places but miles from anywhere - just my kind of place! We'll be back !

I can only endorse what others have said - excellent, friendly site in beautiful surroundings. Camping how it used to be ! The family who own the site are very helpful and the new look website has now listed various walks all accessible from the site including the Cumbria Way which runs past the top of the field.

Absolutely loved this campsite. Owners are very friendly, approachable and happy to give advice on walks etc. Perfect size and owners have not utilised every bit of land so gives feeling of space around you. The location is a walker's dream with wainwrights all around to be explored and of course Skiddaw being the backdrop. There is a bumpy road to get up to the site which isn't great if you're car has a low suspension and is heavily laden. The facilities are clean and tidy - 2 showers and toilets in ladies, 1 shower and a 2 toilets in the gents and a wet room with sink, toilet and shower all in one place so would be ideal for families with kids. The showers are free and piping hot and are proper showers not ones you have to keep pressing the button. There is a radiator in the corridor outside the toilets with hooks to dry any wet clothes. There is also a washing machine which is free to use! Hairdryer in ladies operated by 20p coins. Dish washing area is outside which is lovely looking down to the lake. Love the small touches of the fairy wood for kids to go and explore and whole site has a perimeter fence so very safe and as it is off the beaten track there is no road noise - totally peaceful, just the sound of Mo and the sheep munching grass behind your tent. There is a central covered seating area with picnic benches and bbq's and we took shelter there during the heat of the day. Huge fire pit there too which would be great to sit round in the evening. Small shop on site selling basics and some maps of the area. Pitches pretty level and plenty of room and most pitches have their own fire pit. There is also free wi-fi but it is pretty intermittent. There is local pub about 20 minutes walk away in the village which serves lovely food. This place would be ideal for walkers/families and those just wanting to chill and enjoy peace and quiet.

Little gem of a site so don't tell too many people about it :)
Its a little out of the way but for peace and quiet with lovely views and walks from the door what more do you want.
There is a small shop on site, friendly owners, clean showers and toilets, a pub down the road selling great food and firepits to use.
Nothing was too much trouble for the owners who were friendly, helpful and chatty without being overbearing or full of rules.
Full of walks in the area of all grades and heights and not too far to drive to Keswick or Cockermouth to stock up.
Would definitely visit again as site was great value for money

What a brilliant gorgeous campsite this is. From the moment we arrived everything about our visit was great. The reception was warm and welcoming and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The pitches are plenty big enough and some even have fire pits which is a novelty. (Wood can be bought on site)
The ablution block was spotlessly clean all weekend. My one negative point being there is only one shower in the gents. So there's a queue at busy times of day.
At £9 per adult per night with no extra charges for showers, cars etc. Its reasonable.
There is a small shop in reception which sells essentials otherwise Keswick is only 15 mins away. The Sun Inn public house in Bassenthwaite village is great and serves great food.
This is a great site for children as its a working farm too. Mo the mini horse seemed to be very popular.
I would love to visit again soon and would definitely recommend this site.
Thanks for a lovely weekend

Lovely campsite, free to pitch where you like. Bit of a back road to find it but once you're there it's peaceful with a lovely playing field, fairy wood and plenty of scenery.
Very warm welcome from the owners, always helpful and friendly and around nearly all day. Small shop on site, fire pits on a lot of pitches and a communal fire pit and under canvas area for larger groups with picnic benches.
Only downside was the rather small toilet block which while spotless (often cleaned 4 times a day) there was often a queue. But time it right and the showers were hot and fast flowing.
Definitely recommend if you're around the Keswick area. Fish and chip van in the village once a week and a local pub.
