Just returned home a day early after booking for two nights one was enough. Campsite split virtually into two parts and the part we camped in wasn't too bad. They obviously let the other part of the site to long termers which was not a nice view to look at, shabby caravans and cars. Also going of the sites description we where expecting to be able to walk a 1/4 mile to shops/restaurants this was wishful thinking as the nearest pub is about 1 1/2 mile down a steep single track hill with no footpaths and no street lighting followed by a further walk on main roads. Where the restaurants where we don't know. (Just take aways) So we had to take the motorhome up on to the moors 3 1/2 miles to pub that served food. Not as described and not enjoyable.

Visited for 3 days over the bank holiday and came away with mixed impressions, hopefully the following won't put people off as the owner was friendly and most of the site was quite nice but in order to be honest you have to say what you feel.
Anyway the site is approached along a fairly narrow road and is just round a corner at the top of a hill - the first suggestion would be to be to put the sign a bit further out as its easy to over shoot the entrance and I saw a few people (including us)do it, the other thing about the entrance is to mention the height restriction bar which has to be opened by the owner. I saw a guy nearly drive into it as his wife opened the gate beneath.
We were shown to our choice of 4+ pitches unfortunately although most of the site has grass pitches or hardstanding with grass, these particular ones didnt and are along the back fence, and to be brutally honest the first impression was that we were being pitched on a broken up dirt carpark! We put up the awning and the broken bits of waste pushed up through the groundsheet making it a bit unpleasant to walk on. What puzzled me was that the large grass central area with 8 EHU points only ever had one caravan on it the whole weekend while several of us had to use the dirt pitches. One suggestion would be to either do away with one pitch and put some grass areas in or get a load of nice gravel to level out and hide the frankly, ugly ground.
The showers and facilities where fine but again it would have been nice to have a water point on the our end of the site.
I know this sounds bad but if we had been sited on the central grass or even one of the other pitches this would have been a completely different review but(in our opinion)these pitches spoil the site and perhaps the owner needs to realize that.

This site is very tidy but could be improved with a little though by the owner- i.E. It is very awkward to enter and leave as the owner has to open a height barrier that blocks caravans. He has to be called by telephone normally and your van meanwhile is blocking the lane. There is only one fresh water pipe at the far end of the site by the toilet block involving a two hundred yard walk for some and you have to lift your water barrel a couple of feet onto a grid to fill it. Also waste water has to be emptied into the elsan disposal involving another higher lift and no light is left on in this area at night. Steel posts fixed around parts of the camping field make it difficult to reverse vans into position. We also thought it was overpriced in relation to the facilities

Many pitches occupied by 'long term residents' who seem to leave for work any time after 5:30 am, involving loud diesel engines and the clanking of the security gate.
Toilets are cold and ladies and gents only have 2 toilets and 2 showers each. Imagine summer time visit would make them extremely crowded. No laundry or shop on site. The mains electricity tripped a few times, probably caused by so many microwaves being switched on when the workers returned home.
Harstandings seem to be made from re-cycled asphalt road planings so care must be taken not to make your carpets turn a nice shade of black.
For £14 a night at this time of year I found it pretty poor all in all. Sorry Mr Bellamy, I must have visited a different site. Certainly not 5 Star rating.

Stayed here, this is a good site for chilling out away from the grand children, peaceful, relaxing, lovely people, family run, very clean, good if limited facillities. Shops and supermarket only about half mile away Will go there again, it's a valley where all you hear is the birds. If you want to chill out come here, try it.

We booked at very short notice for this Easter weekend. As everywhere else seemed to be fully booked we wondered what we would find. Our advice to you would be book it - and quickly! An adult’s only site that admits dogs (and cats) and no children – quiet and peaceful. Yes it’s a bit of a hill up to it but well worth it. Gated access - it felt and seemed to be extremely secure. Toilets and showers so clean they put our house to shame. Owners very nice, human, with a sense of humour that tried to match your pitch to your individual requirements. Obviously no amusements around as it's not that sort of site but if chilling out is the order of the day it receives top marks! Would definitely recommend it.

May 2005 Quiet site, slightly unkept looking. Facilities (toilets etc.) good but quite a distance from the main gravelled parking area. Access from main road bad whichever route taken. Entrance to site abrupt with possible overhang of van into lane (not good!) Beware of HEIGHT RESTRICTION BAR - we didn't see it - and my wife got out to open the gate! Hitting it has cost me my 'insurance protection'

12th July 2003 We found Gelder Wood Country Park through neccesity rather than a desire to stay in this area. We were attending a works function on the East Lancs Railway in Bury, which was a dinner suit affair but didn't want to give up our weekends camping. This put me on a mission to find somewhere relatively close to civilisation but with an air of seclusion and safety. I have to say this site was perfect. Just 5 minutes by Taxi from the centre of Bury but in a beautifully secluded spot and well manicured, with a 5-star tourist board rating and adult only we found the perfect spot for a nice weekend away but able to attend the function.
Whilst the facilities were good and clean, there was no shop onsite or nearby, the ladies shower block had no hairdryer (this being the only essential in a non - electric tent setup) and there was no Laundry which is no problem to us for a weekend but campers staying a week or more would have to take extra provisions.
The nearest pub is two miles or so and there is no clubhouse on site, so again make sure you have a good supply of refreshments, also, there was no facility for re-freezing ice packs.
Overall we would say it's a very nice spot for a weekend stay in a tent, any longer and the facilities would be found lacking a little. Although caravanners would find it ok!
