I went to this caravan park with my sister last year as she had become a widow and had a seasonal caravan here and did not know if she wanted to keep it or sell or even if she could cope without her husband. I fell in love with the place at first sight and spent a few weekends with my sister. The staff are very helpful and helped us with lots of things as well as other caravanners that had got to know my sister and her husband very well over their 6 years of going there for the full season. I decided to save and this year I have my own wee tourer going there for the season. There is plenty for the grandkids to do and the toilets are kept clean. If they are not clean you can go tell a member of staff and they will take care of the problem. I for one am looking forward to my many days I will spend on this caravan park.

Our family of 6 stayed for three nights at the beginning of the Bank Holiday weekend with my parents who came along in their caravan. The warden was very accommodation when we booked so that we had pitches next to each other even though we didn't require electric hook up.
The pitches were fantastic, a big space surrounded by trees and far enough away from the road with the option to keep our cars next to us or park them elsewhere. The hardstanding pitches don't look too pretty though, just like a car park but the pitches have a lovely view of the loch.
While the toilet blocks don't look swanky, they were always clean, quiet and the showers were great, (No push buttons that stop and start). You get in with a swipe card rather than key so the kids could manage on their own!
The park is great and we could see the children fron the tent and always felt they were safe and a lovely walk around the loch for our dog. The site was very peaceful in the evening with no disturbances.
An easy walk to the lovely main street and also a CO-OP and Tesco in the town.
Lovely places to visit nearby; Kirkubright, Kippford, Sandyhills.
All this for a bargain price! We only paid £13.50 a night and my parents paid £16.00 with electric! Fantastic value for money.

Been going to this site for a few years now, staff are very friendly and helpful. Site is always clean, and when we have been there nice and quiet on a night The loch is a nice bonus, to look out of the window on a morning its a treat.
Castle Douglas has its very own brewery, lots of great little shops, great butchers. Everyone we have met in the town are very friendly. Pity the campsite wasn't open all year.

My great Gran took my Gran to this campsite and then my Gran took my mum to this campsite then my mum took me to this campsite and now I take my 6 kids here.
The site has 2 toilet blocks that require a card to use and both are exceptionally clean.
My younger kids enjoy going on the paddle boats and miniature golf. They are always telling me how great the parks are. My two oldest girls enjoy going riding at stables nearby and going up the street shopping.
The site has 2 toilet blocks, 2 parks, paddle boats, putting green, skate park and mainly hard-standing pitches. There is a place for tents as well. My dogs Buddy and Belle enjoy walks around the loch as do i.
There is room for improvement but just now my family enjoy what there is.
Dumfries isn't far,neither is Kirkcudbright.
There is an amazing riding school in Ringford.
Stranraer is a little further out but it's worth the journey.
Castle Douglas town is really friendly and we are friends with many of the locals and regulars in the campsite.
I am now expecting female twins for the first time and I hope that they will enjoy the park and facilities as much as their sisters do.

I have just returned after a weekend on this site with friends. Every one of us agreed that the site was well maintained and very friendly. We were next to the playground as we had two small children with us and it was great. There was plenty for them to do and they really enjoyed watching the swans on the loch and had a great time on the paddle boats.
The site was very peaceful - think we were the ones making any noise and I can only apologise if we upset anyone. Sorry!
There was a few of the local kids who met up, just up from the play park about 8pm, but they were only there for about an hour. We let off a sky lantern and they were asking us what it was. They were very pleasant and caused us no concerns unlike in a previous review that has been posted.
The local shops were great and the chip shop just along the road was fantastic. Highly recommend giving it a try mmmmmm!
We all agree that we will be returning to this site in the future as we had such a lovely time here and would encourage everyone who finds themselves in the are to give this site a try.

Our caravan was sited here over winter 2008/9 while my husband worked in the area.
Yes there are problems and there is room for improvement, as with anywhere else, but the good points far outweigh the bad.
This site has been here for a long time but it is a council owned site and like any other council area is subject to budget restrictions and its modernisation is an ongoing project. Because there are so many people who have been staying there for years the site enjoys an almost village atmosphere with all the advantages.
The buildings are old but they are cleaned every day
The touring bay does not double up as a public car park during the winter, members of the public do park there but only when visiting the park.
Youngsters do hang around there occasionally but we never had any cause for concern. This site forms part of the large tourist area surrounding castle Douglas and anything that would reflect badly on that is not tolerated by the council or the police.
Security here is excellent, our caravan and fully equipped awning were unattended Monday to Friday with no problems at all
This site is ideally situated for many purposes, as a base for touring the area or just passing through en route to somewhere else. The surroundings are much better than some five star sites and the local facilities are excellent.
To anyone considering staying there, be it for a night of a month, i would say what you see is what you get, go and stay, relax and just enjoy your visit!

We've been using this site happily for weekend breaks in a tent then motorhome for many years, so I want to clarify some of the contradictory reviews.
1. There are two toilet blocks. We were advised not to use the farther off one as it got muddy. The block by the office was spotless and freshly decorated, with soap and hand dryers and masses of toilet paper i.E. More than some sites give you. So if one block is not to your liking, try the other one and complain (as the Council notice does ask you to!) if either one is not up to standard.
2. Shower cubicles are huge and with a seat each. A wee notice said that if the shower water ran cold, it would be hot after a few minutes running.
3. Rubbish - there are several huge wheelie bins and recycling bins too. In our experience, the wheelies fill up if stuff folk don't bother to recycle. On Thu-Sat when we visited the bins were nowhere near full.
4. Yes, it's unusual to be sited on the tarmac but you're not tracking wet grass cuttings into your motorhome or worrying about sinking into soft ground. There are trees planted next to the pitches, and the pitches are very widely spaced. We've never found it a problem.
5. I agree to a point about the CDP in that it looked to have a flooding problem (but smelt ok). It was also obvious that some folk were putting inappropriate stuff down it (I saw a plastic bottle cap, for example), so it was hardly surprising.
6. One point no-one has mentioned is that if you're in a motorhome or towing a caravan, you can't arrive after 7 pm or leave before 10 am as the overhead gantry is shut at this time. Cars and campervans can get underneath ok. We assume this was to keep the seasonal caravans secure.
7. Dog walk is along the loch side and the office supplies Council poo bags if you've run out.
8. Yes, it's the town park. Yes, pitches by the play area can be noisy with youngsters playing in school holidays, but in my experience they've been children on holiday (whose parents would presumably write a review to say how good it was to have a play area nearby) rather than children from the town.
9. The site is convenient for walking to 'the Food Town' and the Lochside Theatre, and there's plenty to do in the area - that's why we'll keep coming back to this site.

Just arrived back from a bank Holiday weekend at this site which is within easy walking distance of Castle Douglas. This site is council owned and run, the public have full access to the full area and it is a popular dog walking area.
As of a few days ago this site has been opened up to Travellers and their extended families. There was a community of around 14 Traveller Caravans which myself and my wife along with our two children found very intimidating. For the council to allow this site to be overtaken by travellers is very short sited as tourists will stay away which will in turn effect the local economy.
There are three toilet blocks, all of which are a poor standard.
Grass pitches can be very boggy and are all under trees.
Other points to note about this site is the barrier on the access road is set at 2.2 m and locked between 7 pm and 8am. If you go out for the evening in your motor-home you will not be able to get back to your pitch until 8 am next day.

We stayed here for 1 night. There is a new toilet block which was very clean, and is easy reach for the town. It was mostly caravans, think we were the only tent, price was ok, you had to leave a £5 deposit for the toilet block card. But the site out of season is the towns car park! There is also a small children's play ground.

We ended up here for one night due to a problem with a different site we had booked into.
The pitches for caravans, motorhomes and campers etc are all hardstanding, this is not surprising as the site doubles as the town car park when the camping season finishes. This was confirmed by a local council member of staff running the site.
The grass pitches with electric hook up are not marked very well and most are under trees, so your unit still gets dripped on hours after it's stopped raining. The non electric hook up field looks as though it doubles as the town football pitch & is enclosed by houses all round.
The shower/toilet block were absolutely minging. Freezing, blocked urinals, tiny shower cubicles with dirty walls.
Rubbish bins were over flowing and didn't appear to have been emptied for several days.
The CDP was situated in a tiny 'cupboard' in between the female & gents toilets and I don't think it had been cleaned, ever. The stench was similar to that of a 16th century street smell or that of a gheto in the middle of Mogedeshu.
