My husband and I have just returned from a very enjoyable fortnight in the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland (despite the rain). During that time we decided to try the three council run camp sites, including Lochside Camping at Castle Douglas.
The camp site has electric hookups and is all hard standing, two blocks of toilets and showers (but see below). It is lochside and there is a children's play area and picnic area adjacent in the local park. Although this camp site is in a very good position for touring and for the town itself and has a pretty outlook over the loch, although the grounds were like a car park, I would certainly not recommend it for the following reason.
We originally booked for two nights but on inspection of the site and facilities we found that half the site (the best half) was completely taken over by travellers. On investigating the toilets/showers we found them to be in a very bad state
On speaking to the Warden and other legitimate (if that is the word) campers we discovered the Warden had complained to the Council and was to have a meeting with them shortly.
Possibly worth speaking to the Council is this is a camp site you would be interested in staying at. I have sent these comments to the tourist board in Scotland also.

I read the rest of the reviews on here expecting them to really slate this site so was really surprised at the recommendations.
We visited for one night last week (May 2009) and I wasn't a fan. Although perfectly situated for town and it is a lovely spot, it's a strange site for a campsite. The site is set around a public park and lake so it felt strange pitching up amongst locals walking their dogs, kids playing footie and teenagers hanging out (I was worried that they were hitting the cider which made it feel less secure than normal sites).
More importantly though, I've never experienced worse toilets/ shower block. They were absolutely crumbling and old It put us off having a shower which is why we only stayed one night. The site just felt totally unloved.

The site itself is council-owned and maintained. Access is via a security barrier, for which you receive a passcard for a five pounds deposit. Pedestrian access is available from three directions.
The site is located at the end of the town, next to Carlingwark Loch, a local church and playgrounds. The site itself is relatively small and for touring caravans and tents. Much of the site is hard surface with electric hook ups, and the tent part of the site is relatively small but adjacent to the toilets.
The toilets and showers are accessed by a key, and are free to use, clean and well-maintained.
The site is an easy walk to Castle Douglas High Street, with lots of independent shops, a Woolies, Boots, Tesco, a nice cafe called the Scotch Pantry, Library and Art Gallery (open late and with free internet access). There is a micro-brewery in town (and about 5 mins walk from the site) - Sulwath Brewery. There is a free visitor centre, and a tour for 3.50 - it's well worth it, conducted by one of the owners and includes two free halves.
Close by are the lovely towns of Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet, and the National Trust Threave Garden and House. Threave Garden is really pretty and has a good market garden too.
Everyone is very friendly in the town, and at the site itself (a lot of the site appears to be seasonal guests) - well worth a visit.
One tip though - if it's windy (and it was exceptionally windy and wet when we visited) - make sure you pitch in a sheltered spot if you can. The camping field can be whipped up and swirly.

I have visited this site for the last twelve years and have found it to be a exceptionally clean site, both grounds and tiolet/shower blocks. The comment which was left by another camper about the rubbish building up over the time he was there (5days) is not the norm, he obviously visited after rubbish was collected (usually on a monday) and left within a day or so of it being collected again. Even so the staff normally make sure that rubbish is kept in the bays provided and if one of these areas has too much they move some of it to one of the less used collection areas. I would definately recommend this site for any age group.

I visit this campsite a few times a year because of the excellent fishing that Loch Carlingwark has to offer. I normally go at Easter and July ( infact i'll be there in a couple of weeks ) and everytime I have been it has been just right. We have always had plenty of room for the tent, it has never been packed and is always very clean and the staff there are very helpful. Castle Douglas is a brilliant town for food lovers and the pubs are welcoming. I've noticed a few people saying that the pubs are not that good really which I believe isn't true. You have to remember that this is a small town, yes they may be quiet but thats what you want when you go away, a nice quiet drink. A few will let dogs in too which is a bonus. Everything you need is here for both the fishing and camping, with an excellent tackle shop in Castle Douglas. Myself and all of my family have been visiting for many years and will carry on visiting for many years to come. See you soon.

We have been visiting this site for years and where there Aug bank holiday. We find the wardens friendly and very helpful. The site is clean and can be busy at times but can always find a pitch. Its true the toilets are clean and I have never had a cold shower yet. The fishing in the Loch is very good but can be took over by weekender fishermen. This year we where lucky to see the local otter and the Tour of Britain Cycling race passed through Castle Dougles. We have never had any trouble. We always find it relaxing and the kids have fun and there is always something happening and things to see in the surrounding towns and areas.

The site is unusual in that it is set in a public park. There are two large tarmaced areas laid out with about 30 caravan pitches on each one and a large grassed area used by both tents and caravans. The park location is idyllic in that it is right on the edge of a beautiful loch with swans, etc. The park has mature trees and flowerbeds and a well appointed playground area. All of the facilities are open to the general public and there is nothing to seperate the caravan and tenting areas from the rest of the park.
Surprisingly however there does not seem to be a problem with security. Although there were a few local youngsters hanging around in the evenings they did not cause any trouble.
The toilet block are reasonable, accessed by key. The fresh water points are annoyingly fitted with push, and hold on, type taps which are not really suitable for use with aquaroll hoses. The CDP was fitted with a the same sort of tap and no hose for rinsing the cassette.
The staff are helpful although the warden is only there during the day.
Castle Douglas is a pleasant market town with a good range of shops and amenities. The surrounding countrysidie is beautiful and the coast is witin an easy drive.
We stayed at the site going to and from our summer holiday in Dumfries and Galloway and we have stayed there too in the past.

May 2005 We arrived late on a Saturday (bank holiday weekend) and were squeezed in to a pitch just big enough for our tent by friendly and helpful staff. Could have done with more space but were grateful to have been accepted late in the day.
Ladies toilets were ok, but dated - shower area had plenty of room, but mine was cold. Also rather smelly outside of the toilets.
Generally a good location, but found the local pubs left a little to be desired. The station hotel was a quieter bar that allowed dogs, and was ran by friendly local people.
Were advised that the walk around the loch was pleasant, however half of this was not near the loch, and on a minor road.
Generally had a good stay, but felt that it was a little claustrophobic.
Would advise visit to local brewery (five minute walk away).

April 2004 This site is beautifully set next to Carlingwark Loch. The trees are mature, the wild flowers and birds are a joy, and its reasonably priced. I have a few reservations about this site. One is the bins were full to over flowing, we were there five days and they were not emptied. Come midge season this place will be hotchin with the little buggers. The last is, this is a public park and the youth of the area seem to find it a place to congregate (one group of girls enjoyed the refuse area) I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here, but I would not go here at the height of the season.
