August 2004 Stayed here for the August bank holiday.
This wouldn't have been our first choice as it has no direct beach access (but more on that later). We were phoning up campsites with not unpleasant reviews, all around the area on the Friday evening; but all were fully booked for the weekend. After about 30 calls and nearly cancelling the trip, we struck lucky with Crackwells. So it's worth keeping in mind for a last minute trip. When we got there they still had space for at least 10 more family tents.
Reception: Very friendly. We got there around 5pm on the Saturday. They even offered to show us round the available pitches.
Costs: £10/tent/night (includes 2 adults, children free), £2/dog/night. Free instant hot water in the basins, showers 20p for 5 mins (it's not near a beach so why ?? ). Laundry is £1.40 per wash, dryer 20p/20mins.
Facilities: Just built campers toilet/shower block (4 of everything (i.e. total of 8, combining mens' and womens') ). Toilet paper inc., but no hand soap. Whole block is designed to be hosed down, which was done once a day (usually in the afternoon) with disinfectant, so pretty clean. One gripe is muddy floor due to campers trekking in and out. They need some kind of entrance mat or rug thing. And men campers ! Come one ! Is it that difficult to ensure your pee goes in the bowl; not on the seat or floor ! And teach your sons too ! One problem was that the just built block didn't have the dish washing sinks installed yet. And the old toilet block didn't have those either. I've been promised that they will be up by Christmas, with free hot water. The laundry facility was composed of just one washer and one dryer, at the back of the reception hut. The reception hut had a very tiny shop, with mainly bread, milk, eggs, frozen foods and snacks. The freezer pack service was 20p/pack. Remember to mark you bag; I managed to retrieve someone elses packs. There is a very small children play area near the reception office, with some adventure equipment which will keep a competent 5 year old occupied for as many minutes.
Pitches: The tenting area is in a sheltered field at the bottom of the site. The field has a gentle slope on it everywhere. There is an overflow area out of the main field, along the driveway, but it has a slightly steeper slope (20'..30'), and the bottom of this area can get muddy and 2WD cars that venture there, accidntally or otherwise, did get stuck from time to time. The pitches are so well sheltered from both on and off shore winds that even though there was a 20mph wind on the Sunday, we hardly got a breeze. Of course, this could be a problem in itself if its hot and humid. There is no view from this site; even if you climb the steep hill at the far end. There is a little undeground brook that crosses the site, break cover at the bottom of the site (near the overflow tenting area). It seemed to be an attraction for the campsite children, so you probably don't want to pitch too close to it, if you want any peace. There are trees and bushes around the periphery of the field, but nothing in the middle. And watch out for the ubiquitous stinging nettles in the bushes.
Security: The whole site felt generally safe. The tenting site even more so as it is deep into the site, at least 200m from the entrance (and reception). I don't have children of an age at which I would let them loose, but there were many children over the age of 9 running and biking about quite happily, even in the dark until about 10pm, at which time a curfew comes into place and the site security rounds up any strays. CCTV is used at this site.
A few local tips: While the site has no beach access, Penally is literally 10 minutes walk up the road, and from the railway station (which has a free car park) there is a pram negotiable path which allow you to get onto Tenby South beach in 5 minutes. If you need to park on the water front for beach access, Tenby South Beach car park is your best bet; but get there before 10am, to have any hope of getting a space; otherwise, Manorbier beach is the next best thing. If you're going into Tenby town centre, park at the Saltern out of town park-n-ride and catch the bus (£1 all day parking with bus fare inc.) into the Tenby high street, which is pedestrianised during the day time in summer. Pembroke and Pembroke-Dock are 11 miles away and really not worth the visit; the selection of shops is poor, and we couldn't find a shop selling camping equipment. One more thing. The entrance to the site from the main road is pretty narrow and guarded by low stone walls on either side. If goming from the West (Pembroke), be really carful when turning in, especially if you have a trailer or van in tow. And when leaving, if turing out Eastwards (towards Tenby), beware again ! And the narrow main road doesn't help either. I managed to scrape the car on the wall, trying to make a quick and stylish get away. Apparently they've appied for permission to widen the entrance, but there is a tree in way, which has preservation order.
All in all, a good campsite, but one we will probably not return to simply because its location is not what we would be looking for.

August 2004 Stayed here as the only place with free pitches. Bargain price and was pleasantly surprised - located in Penally, beautiful village outside Tenby with fab beaches and coastal walks. Set off main road but caravans and tents located well away - only the sound of cows and sheep to wake up to! Just had new shower and toilet block built - 20p a shower for approx 5 mins -loadsa hot water. Very peaceful and spacious. Slight slope to our field - but many flat pitches. Great view in morning. My two kids loved it. I'd like to see them add another play area and washing up sinks. Visited Trefalan and Kiln Park whilst in Tenby and glad we selected this one.

August 2003 This is a very quiet and pleasant campsite, we stayed here for 4 nights and had a great time. It had a lovely clean shower block and toilets, a little park area for children and was very reasonably priced. We are hoping to book again for August 2004.
