Used this site as a base over Easter. Usual high standard CC site, no playground but didn't matter as we were out everyday! An hour from Legoland and 20 mins from Cockfosters tube station which has a huge car park. The tube then takes you right into the centre of London in about 30 mins. Only cost us £1 to park all day at the station as it was weekend/bank hol.
Site is right next to a hospital but didn't really notice any noise. Only minor niggle was the floodlighting coming from the caravan storage area adjacent-if it bothers you then you might need to find a pitch away from this area.
We will definitely return to this site.

To Find Site:- Leave A1M at junction 4 onto 414 signed for Hertford and after about a mile take slip road for the A1000 towards Welwyn Garden City. At the end of the short slip road are traffic lights where you turn left onto the A1000, proceed carefully as you have to turn second right into Ascots Lane after only a short distance. Ascots lane is fairly narrow but fine if you take care. The entrance to the campsite is on the right immediately before the QE2 Hospital.
The Commons Wood campsite is in an urban setting on the southern edge of Welwyn Garden City, next to the QE2 Hospital, despite this it seems a peaceful location. This members only site is open all year. There are in the region of 70 pitches with the majority being on hardstanding. They are set out around a circular site road and some are unusual, for a Caravan Club site, in being bordered by hedges so giving a greater degree of privacy. It seems that pitches around the perimeter of the site have recently been converted to hardstanding. The centre section of the site, in front of the toilet block, is all grass pitches which seem only to be used in the summer season. All pitches have access to electrics and TV signal. WiFi is also available. There is a large storage enclosure as part of this site. There is one main toilet block which is up to the usual Club standards.
Commons Wood is close to the centre of Welwyn which has a good range of shops. For those not wanting to take a car in the bus stop is situated outside the QE2 Hospital. There are several supermarkets the nearest being either Tesco near the A1M junction or Waitrose near the centre of the town. This site is also convenient for visits to London by train, the information hut on site has lots of information. Hatfield House is close to the site but best to check opening dates on their website
There are several National Trust properties within travelling distance but the nearest is Shaw's Corner the country home of the playwright George Bernard Shaw.

It is a lovely quiet members only site. The wardens were very helpful and friendly. There is no shop on site, but the office will sell you a tv aerial cable for £15, as the service is horrendous. However, there is an Asda not far away in Hatfield and you can get the same thing for £6.99. Be aware that the EHU seem to be a longway from the vans and our 15m cable wasn't long enough to reach!
They have wifi, but charge £5 an hour, which I thought was a bit pricey. Vodafone signal was excellent.
Dog walk around the outside of the site, but no entrance to the site, you have to go right out and round which was a nuisance.
Toilet block was lovely and warm and very clean, showers were plentiful and hot.
This site is right next to the hospital, but you really forget that it's there, and there is virtually no noise from it. Woods on one side and a huge caravan storage facility on the other, all very well disguised with trees and shrubs.
Overall it's a very clean and tidy, friendly site. It's very close to the A1 and therefore great for London visits if you want; or indeed stay on site and forget where you are- just relax in the peace and quiet watching the squirrels and rabbits.

Excellent Caravan Club site ( members only ) well up to the usual high standard. Has a large compound for storage of caranans with barbed wire lights etc. Next door to Q.E.2 hospital which is huge and there is a distant motorway and plane noise, but despite how this sounds it was reasonably peaceful for its location with lots of wildlife around. Staff were pleasant and helpful and security is good ( pass card barrier system ). There is a large area of woodland alongside the site which has extremely pleasant walks, although the nearest entrance to it is next to the hospital so there is quite a lot of litter there but don't let that put you off. Local shops are an easy 15min walk away. No specific childrens play area but there is lots of space. Toilets/showers, as you would expect, are to a good standard and very clean. Lots of leaflets/ maps etc. In the information room which was helpful also a book exchange system with donations to charity.

Found the site very clean and tidy. The wardens very very helpful. A little disappointed that there was not a lot to do in the area. Hatfield house was closed and so were some of the other attractions. This site does have a very large storage area. The sat nav takes you right to the site.

This is a members only caravan club site. The toilet facilities are immaculate. We used it as a site with good access to London. A twenty minute drive from the site takes you Cockfosters tube station then a 35 min ride and you are in Leicester Square. We stayed here over the Easter Weekend and went into London everyday. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

March 2003 Although I didn't actually stay at this site they allowed me to have a look around.
The site looked like a typical Caravan Club site, well maintained grounds with immaculate looking toilet and shower block. Plenty of hook ups and fresh and waste water points.
The site is situated about a 5 minute drive from Welwyn Garden City centre with easy access to the A1M (J5). You have the historic city of St Albans only 15 minutes down the road and the County town, Hertford, again about 15 minutes drive away. For the youngsters there is a working flour mill and Roman Baths within a very short distance and both these are free entry but only open at certain times.
The wardens on site seem very friendly and also happy to help out in any way they can. Security on this site is top notch with barrier entry and exit systems.
If I didn't live around the corner I would visit this site.
