Came to this site the weekend before the bank holiday and glad we did as when we started to put our tent up we were told we would of had to pay for 2 pitches but was ok as they weren't expecting anyone else to arrive. Was a bit shocked with this as we have never had this problem before. Our tent sleeps 6 but its not one of those big dome types that have a few rooms coming out from the centre.
The site is mainly set up for seasonal caravans and the lodges are all privately owned. The couple that live there are the wardens and seemed nice. The site is a short drive to local attractions and shops. I did see the peacock but never heard it.
Don't think the toilets were cleaned while there, it was always freezing and there was cobwebs everywhere. The site could of done with a little shop I think. For £17 a night I didn't think it was value for money.

Well we thought we were prepared for the peacocks after reading the reviews on here but more of that later.
The site was lovely and clean. The wardens were very pleasant and helpful. They even offered to manoeuvre my caravan into position after spotting me preparing to unhitch and manoeuvre in by hand (as normal). The showers and toilets were clean and we didn't have any problems with the hot water in both the bath and the shower. There was a great little room next to reception full of books and magazines to borrow. There were loads of leaflets advertising local attractions and menus for local pubs and takeaways.
The down side was reception was never open so we had problems finding the wardens if any problems. There is also no shop on site so make sure you don't run out of any provisions.
We knew the peacocks started calling early but what we weren't prepared for was for the male to constantly physically attack our brand new car. The warden thought it might be due to the bright blue colour but the only help he offered was 'shoo him away if he comes near. He thinks it's another peacock'. We couldn't relax at all as he came back every 5 minutes when we were on site. We'd only booked in for 2 days and were glad to leave after that as we were exhausted from chasing him. Even if we'd booked in longer we'd have left due to this.
A shame because this has the makings of a lovely site but it's not for us and we won't be going back.

Well, what can I say. If you love being woken up around 5.30 in the morning to the resident peacocks, love being the middle of nowhere and enjoy cold showers, then this is the site for you! But more seriously, the site is located in a central location just off the A1 so is great for venturing out to York, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire and even the coast is only about 75 mins away. There were only a small number of tents and tourers over the Easter Weekend, the majority of the caravans are there permanently. The staff were friendly and there is a small playground that kept our children amused. There are 2 toilet/shower blocks but I would suggest using the wooden one (not behind reception) as the showers in there were hot although there is no heating. I couldn't get any of the showers in the main block to heat up during the 4 days we were there although the sinks & bath seemed to have hot water. There are no pubs within walking distance and the nearest town is about a 10 minute drive. The wildlife on the site is great, peacocks, birds & rabbits but just be prepared of the noise that they make!

This was our first camping experience, and it was not too bad. The owners were friendly and the site was quiet, we were the only tent. The major problem for us was the sound of the road, it was constant through the night and we decided due to this and bad weather to leave after one night. Toilet/showers okay, clean but need updating. The children liked the play area but is behind the shower block so you cant see it from the site.

Visited over Easter holiday. Site very easy to find from A1(M). Local area very scenic, plenty of nice walks.
Knaresborough, nearby (with an excellent car park large enough to take bigger motorhomes, just seconds from the Market Place - and very cheap, too - 60p, 2 hours/£1 - 4 hours/£1.20 up to 10 hours) is a lovely place to visit. Tearooms, pubs, restaurants and exceptional scenic walks. Hilly and overlooking the River Nidd, we'd recommend a visit.
As stated by other reviews, the site mainly caters for static caravans and park lodges. Trees ring the site, wildlife / peacocks friendly and ready to join you for a meal. Tap on each pitch and hookups are in close proximity to each vehicle.
On a negative point, as previously stated in other reviews, the showers in the toilet blocks were somewhat dated and in need of repair. Hot water issues still need to be addressed. Spoke with warden and told about the timer - why was this not addressed a year (and earlier) before?? The block itself was very cold - where was the heating?
Please note that there is no motorhome waste point, you'd need to de-cant waste water and put into drain. We've had better facilities on CL/CS sites, for much less cost.
Sorry, but we found this site falls short of the 4-Star Rating given by the Tourist Board.
Will certainly be returning to the area, but not to this campsite.

Visited Allerton Park for our first trip out of the year, just a one night stay and lovely weather for March. Easy to find and easy to get to, just off A1, but strangely it feels well out in the country. Found site owners to be friendly and helpful. The site is yet another that seems to cater mostly for seasonal tourers so we were squashed onto a grass verge, but it did have its own drain and tap which was useful. The site is quite small, but there are lovely walks just outside the entrance, walking down to the little church near the castle was great (Castle all private property though).
Toilet block clean and adequate but a bit dated, ladies had a bath and one privacy cubicle, not sure about men's. Mostly big posh tourers on site so had facilities to ourselves!
The best thing about this park is the very tame wildlife, it is a David Bellamy Gold Award site and it's easy to see why. We shared our salad with a family of peacocks, who liked to sit on top of our van! Lots of wild rabbits and birds too.

We stayed at this site for 1 night in March 07 (£12 per night). As the other review mentioned, it caters mainly for static caravans but has a camping area, all with electric hook ups and water. The toilets/shower blocks looked like they had recently been decorated and seemed quite clean. The cold showers were a problem though for both the mens and womens blocks. I left all three showers (one other wasn't working) running at once to see which one would get hot first but gave up in the end. When we mentioned it to the owner/groundsman he said he didn't know what the problem was as apparently the hot water is on a timer which was supposed to start warming up at 1.30 each morning. The washing up facilities were clean and there was plenty of hot water for the dishes. There is a large field near the entrance for dog walking and the site had plenty of resident peacocks and rabbits. The site was clean and well maintained and if I knew the showers would be hot I would visit again. We stayed at the beginning of the season so am not sure how busy and overcrowded it gets at peak times.

MAY 2004 We Visited this site in May 2004 because my niece got married at the nearby castle, we have 2 young boys and thought it would be easier to leave when we needed to and avoid messing about catching taxis. (It is within walking distance of Allerton Castle) Everything went to plan. This is only a small camp site with a small area for camping. They mainly cater for static caravans who stay for most of the year. We were advised this when we booked. The toilets were not very modern but were clean (opened by a key given on arrival). A mop and bucket was left for people to clear up if they left a mess. I couldn`t get the showers warm at all. I ended up having a bath, my husband said the mens were as bad. I asked the warden and he said something about an air bubble in the pipes, but I left the shower running for 10 mins and they were still cold. There is nothing else on the site. They were altering something on the site, diggers and piles of mud were all around the edge of the site. Dish washing facilities looked clean. And a small kids playground is located just behind the toilets. The site is surrounded by tall trees which give it a forest feeling. The site also has a small shop selling sweets, papers and drinks etc. It served its purpose for us but we wont be going again.
