This is a great forest park with plenty of walks to suit all abilities. The caravan park itself is on different levels with views of the Mourne mountains.

Even in February the site was half full with over 40 vans and motorhomes and even some tents in the camping field!

The toilet block is clean and has free hot showers and washing facilities. There are water taps with grey water drains dotted about the site and sluices located in wee sheds in a couple of places.

Nearby is the town of Newcastle where you can get groceries and gas, eat out and get an ice-cream! There is a chip van in the forest park during the summer months but at this time of year your best bet for decent takeaway is at the garage on the Castlewellan Road, where you can get full dinners to take away, gas and petrol/diesel. There is also a supermarket here too.

The wardens are about the site regularly and the place is quiet and litter free. There is no kids play area but the wood around the site and the trees along the avenue are a great adventure playground for any child.

The site is open all year round, one of the very few here that is, and is just as breathtaking in winter as it is in spring, summer and autumn.

This is a great child friendly camp site, I have been here on many occasions plenty of space for the kids to run about without worrying, would recommend to every-one. Toilets/showers are clean and tidy, there is a milk run in the mornings which was very handy washing and drying facilities. It doesn't have a playground but there is plenty of space for the kids to run around.

Tollymore isn't far from Newcastle town where there are amusements, beaches outdoor pools, coco's indoor playground and lots more.

Tollymore Forest has to rate as one of my favourite places to visit. The Forest covers approximately 630 hectares and extends to the lower slopes of the Mourne Mountains. There are many way marked trails ranging from about a mile or so right up to 8 miles. The longer trails cover a good portion of the forest and lead to great viewpoints across the surrounding area. Even on very busy days you tend not to meet too many people on the longer walks as most tend to stick to the river trails which are not that far from the main visitor car park!

Local Attractions

Approximately two miles from the site is the seaside town of Newcastle. This has all the usual tourist attractions with amusement arcades and various hotels and guest houses. The beach extends for miles and leads to a great view of the Mourne Mountains which are very popular with walkers. The promenade has been newly refurbished for 2006 and is a nice place to relax whilst enjoying an ice cream and watching 'the world go by!'
The Royal County Down Golf Course is a championship course and has hosted many major tournaments over the years and is due to host next years Walker Cup.
Two miles from the forest in the other direction is the small town of Castlewellan. It also has a forest park with a lake and a castle. It also has a maze within the forest grounds which is the worlds largest permanent hedge maze!

Caravanning and Camping.
Tollymore has always been very popular for caravanning and camping. The main family camping area has room for 110 units of which 72 are hard standing with EHU 6 amp supply. This is the only area open during the low season but during the high season they open up a field for youth organisations and another field for rallies and overflow from the main family area. This tends to more than double normal capacity and my only criticism is that it puts a strain on the facilities and the staff seem to struggle to stay on top of things! However, I tend to stay mostly during the low season when everything runs very smoothly.
The site has two toilet and two shower blocks as well as laundry facilities and a room for dishwashing etc. There is also a smaller block which serves the rally field.
Tariffs are as follows
High Season Good Friday - 30 September
Low Season 1 October - Thursday before Easter
Long Stay Sites
£ (per night) Rally
£ (per night) Youth Sites
(per night)
High Low High Low 1 to 16 persons £2.50 pp
Youth campsite deposit £20 (non refundable)
Caravan & Camping 13.00 9.00 11.50 7.50
Electricity Point £1.50 extra per 24 hours (or part thereof)

Tollymore Forest Park is nestled at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, Co Down in Northern Ireland. This site is very polular with families and youth organisations, there are seperate fields for different types of campers, you can be as isolated as you wish. The views from the main site are breath taking, the forest and the mountains. The weather tends to be changeable with all four seasons in one day! The tree lined avenue is great for tree climbing and brings back childhood memories.

The site is well run, a ranger patrols until midnight and there is a peaceful but jolly family atmosphere. There are two seperate toilet and shower blocks, the main one can get busy at peak times but you can be sneaky and go off to the lower block where you won't be bothered by the crowd! The dish washing faciilities are clean too. There are no other facilites such as shops, nightclubs or bars, just the way we like it, neither is there a kids playground, the whole forest being a playground! Open all year round
