Our first camping expedition - we chose two nights at Solway using the Sun 2-4-1 offer.
Arrived on the Friday and was in and out of reception in minutes - the nice lady told us to pitch wherever we wanted. Having driven round and seen that they'd suffered from a lot of rain we chose a slightly elevated pitch (which turned out to be a good move - as the site flooded on the Saturday due to extreme weather conditions meaning a lot of tents were either flooded, or moved to avoid being flooded).
I have been to Haven/Hendra and stayed in Statics and Tourers in the past but this was our first time in a tent. I have to say the things that I loved about this site were
1 - the price of things in the shop (50p for a pint of milk, 60p for washing up liquid)
2 - the price of drinks in the club £12 for 3 Pints and 3 cokes
3 - the size of the club - perfect size, no problems getting seated
4 - the entertainment - they had 4 young entertainers and they worked hard all the time they were there. A couple of decent acts performed as well
The park (both indoor soft play and outdoor adventure playgrounds) were great. There is a small indoor amusements in Silloth and a few shops and pubs, I would recommend a trip down to Maryport where there was a Trawler Race, couple of fair ground rides and we ate in the Captain Nelson Pub (the food was amazing and reasonably priced)
All in all, a great time had by all - the apalling weather did not dampen our spirits, but if you go during bad weather, just becareful where you pitch!

Visited Solway Holiday Park for the Jubilee bank holiday. We were very disappointed. The site was in chaos due to an offer that had been online.
We said our pitch wasn't suitable as a tree completely overhung the pitch and the staff said they didn't care we could pitch anywhere! the site was noisy and unsanitary and the facilities and shower block awful. We pitched on the overflow field as it was quieter however, this was difficult as it was full of hard core.
The site is situated next to a concrete works and was full of biting flies! I followed the complaints procedure but unfortunately I have not had a satisfactory outcome from this and poor customer service.
The village of Sollith has little to offer however, if you are prepared to drive Keswick was an absolute delight and the boat trip was well worth the money.
Also Cockermouth was lovely and Wasdale as stunning as ever (definitely visit the pub/cafe at the end). I was also very thrilled to drive past Sellafield Nuclear Plant it looked very austere!
We also had a beautiful drive home using the country roads instead of the main roads through to the South Lakes with some stunning scenery.

This was our second week at Solway in the tent(we went May 2011). When we arrived and checked in we were told our pitch, however it appeared that some guests were confused with pitch numbering.
We were pitched on field A in the electric hook up area. This site has something for everyone, children's activities, the bar, amusements and evening entertainment.
The site was very busy so swimming was on a booking system for part of the week, however this seemed to work ok.
We had torrential rain while we were there and we were extremely lucky with our pitch as some of the pitches did end up quite flooded
There are a couple of small supermarkets in Silloth to pick up essentials and the shop on site is good value for the essentials.
There are 3 showers in the toilet block but if you're not fussy about the time of your shower you don't need to queue. It is quite difficult to keep your clothes dry within the cubicle, there were chairs supplied outside the shower cubicles but I don't like to leave my possessions out of my sight.
There doesn't appear to be a noise curfew on this site and a couple of nights there were groups of people being very rowdy in the early morning hours, however this was not coming from the touring areas but from the static caravans which are quite near the touring/camping area.

I thought it would only be fair to post a fresh review of this site as we visited it on exactly the same week in July - exactly a year later.
I still love Solway, its a place I've visited from childhood and I've been able to watch the changes to just about everything in the park over the years. Its still got that uncommercialised slightly tired look as a site, but under the surface its a fantastic holiday centre. The shower blocks now have a combination lock rather than the £5 deposit which means no single sex at a time going to the toilet. Nothing changed inside. I still find them sufficient but with a bit of investment would be a lot better. There is also more than one water point for the whole site and I'd suggest that the person who left the review with that comment should perhaps have looked around and they'd have found at least another 2. Entertainment this year was absolutely top notch. Fantastic acts, AJ, Dayne and the team were happy to entertain everyone and went out of their way to ensure everyone had a great time, cant fault it and wont fault it.
However, Hagens leisure really need to sort the camping area BIG TIME. Its a fantastic site, its old style with no over selling of vans etc, but come on. The pitches are seriously lacking drainage. The seasonal pitches need to be managed better - some of the seasonal pitches looked very off putting and very very scruffy. Its only a couple of units like this, but they are situated right next to the toilet block and I had to negotiate a family working on a motorbike, a dog barking constantly and The dirtiest looking caravans I've ever seen. Very off putting if its your first visit to the site and you have to camp across from these. The drainage could be sorted, the pitches could be maintained a lot more efficiently and the seasonal pitches should be moved to the rear of the site or to another part of the site allowing the tourism trade to thrive.
Pitch sizes are massive and its advisable to use rock pegs as the ground can be quite hard (remember its an old airfield) Underneath my tent flooded this week and It was filthy. My wife also managed to slip on the flooded ground and we had to visit A&E on the way home. My major gripe with this site though is this - when someone books a particular pitch, the reception should know whether or not its got a seasonal on it. We booked pitches next to the toilets as 3 in our party have walking problems and needed to be nearby the toilet. We turned up to find a seasonal on the pitch we booked (think shameless). We were then placed on the said pitches that flooded. I was not happy and I'll agree that they bust a gut to fix it for us, but it did ruin our holiday.
Now I know this review might sound really negative, but its one of my favourite family sites and we're booked to go back at Easter. We live and learn and I know the pitches to avoid and apart from the total free for all with seasonal tourers, I still love the place.

This is not the site we usually use when we visit the Silloth area but with tokens out of the daily mirror, 95p a night plus £6 for our electric it was worth a visit. The weather had been fair for weeks so the ground was bone dry, but you can see places that have been churned up due to the poor drainage mentioned. We were told just to find a pitch, while our friends were told which pitch to use. The site looked to be quite busy but most turned out to be seasonal tourers with no one at home.We found a large sheltered pitch not level but not far off.
The site is well kept and they are advertising for wardens so it can only get better. The toilet block has a key pad entry and was kept clean and tidy. As the site only has 2 male showers and 3 toilets I expect it is a bit of a wait in peak season. Overall the whole site could do with some updating but all the staff were helpful and the facilities were ok. Don't know if we would pay full price to return but would not put any one off going.

Stayed here for 4 nights, a very nice site with well drained ground. Plenty to do on site with club, games room, swimming pool etc and a nice seafront just outside camp gates
Toilets are clean with plenty of hot water
Plenty of room on camp fields
There is also a small zoo and a miniature train to take you round the camp and there is also tennis courts and a golf course too for a small charge,
There is not many places to visit locally although the seafront town is very pleasant with great views across the firth

Bank holiday weekend paid £22.95 per night, then was told it was an extra £6.95 each if we wanted passes to use facilities for 2 adults and 3 children in total just over £103. The large touring site is right at the back of the campsite and are large and were in good condition. There is only one toilet block which was in okay condition and wait for it 1 yes 1 water tap for the whole campsite.
The campsite itself has got parts of it that could be up dated, there is a mix of chalets, statics and touring, the entertainments complex contains reception, small shop with not a lot in it, bistro (never tried), pub, medium sized family entertainment room which was very well done out, soft play (I believe you had to pay extra for this), laundry and swimming pool which was okay, just outside was a large play park and run down crazy golf course.
The mini train runs around the park, with a nice man which stops at various points to tell you about the history of the air field next door(which has a weekly Sunday market and car boot, 15min walk), about the area and park, talk not very intresting for the kids but they enjoyed the ride, 50p each lasts 45mins.
Backing onto the touring area is the golf course (£5 for the day)and farm. Silloth I was told is about a 15 min walk and has a coop, few pubs and fish shops etc.
I would go back to this campsite and with a little up dating, care and extra water taps, this site could be very nice.

We stayed here for a full week at the beginning of July 2010. The site was quite quiet throughout the week and busy at the weekend. Pitches are all large and EHU is included free with your pitch. There is a charge for the entertainment passes and in my opinion is well worth the money as our kids absolutely loved the weeks entertainment which meant happy mum and dad too!
Some pitches have not got great drainage - especially the two pitches directly across from the toilet block - avoid these at all costs if there is a chance of rain during your stay. We were dry, but the outside of the tent was a mud bath after a couple of downfalls. The showers are adequate and there's a £5 returnable deposit for the key. Dishwashing facilities are also in the same building as the showerblock.
The camping site is at the very back of the camp and away from the entertainment, so you don't get noise travelling. There are also regular security patrols through the night and the security manager lives just in front of the touring park. This is a favourite site of ours because of where its situated. The area around it has lots to see and do and I'd recommend the Gincase farm. Lots of well kept animals and a fantastic restaurant. Lots for the whole family to do and only 5 miles from the site.
There is plenty to do in this site - it even has a little farm that you can go and see deer and pigs etc. We got to feed the deer during our visit. The swimming pool is great fun and bearing in mind that its an old style park, your not going to get the flumes and fancy spa type things you get in the more expensive parks. I like the layout of the park as nothing jumps out at you to spend money - something parks of a similar nature seem to thrive on.
The site is a little bit tired looking on the outside, but don't judge on appearance. We had the best holiday we've had in years at the Solway and cant wait to go back. A couple of downsides - The takeaway in the park is very expensive and portions very small. Surprisingly the town of Silloth has some fantastic chippies - Andy's is absolutely brilliant and very reasonable. Portions are Massive - even the kids meals are gigantic.
The on site shop isnt great. Ok for sweets and perhaps emergency pint of milk or a newspaper. Silloth has a co-op and a Spar, so there's somewhere closer to get the groceries and if you need a decent sized shop there's always Morrisons in Workington. Another thing to be aware of when camping is the powercuts when using EHU. Granted that the week in July we stayed it didn't happen at all, but we stayed here during the May bank holiday and the EHU kept tripping - due to how busy the site was, and the folk who couldn't live without 32 inch tellies, microwave ovens etc. The site electrics just couldn't take it.
I'm not saying this site is perfect for everyone. Our family love the site and its perfect for us. If you want your kids to experience the kind of British holiday you had as a child, this might just be the place to do it.

We stayed here for a few nights in July and don't think we will be returning. Generous sized pitch although the grass did need cutting. The warden tried to keep the toilet blocks clean doing them twice a day but was a losing battle really and the showers were very disappointing.
Swimming pool was ok but paint was flaking off the side into the pool and I was told the ladies changing rooms were very unclean. Club also ok, ents staff tried hard. Bistro was just a jazzed up takeaway. Playpark was ok, kids loved it. T
he on site farm doesn't live up to expectations and although we saw the train a couple of times round the site we never saw it stop so didn't know where to get on or off. More information is needed from the Reception when you get there. Not a great deal to do in Silloth itself although it does have a paddling pool on the green and a small funpark.

After 9 years of static caravan ownership on this site we have decided to sell up, the site is very large and could do a lot better if the present owner invested in it. But in saying that some of the site facilities are good if not a bit tired and the staff are all excellent. Drainage has always been a problem as mentioned in other reviews.
Dont think I will go back.
