Spent 5 nights here during the week before the Bank Holiday. We had electric hook up for our tent and found an ideal pitch without any problems. Sally is very welcoming and just says 'go where you like'.
The new shower/toilet block is exceptional. The shower rooms have toilet and wash basin and are simply huge - easily room for a family of three in the event of an overnight deluge!
I was amazed at the condition of the grass all over the site. There had been heavy rain but there were no mud patches or tyre tracks anywhere. I threatened to take some turf home with me.
The lakes are lovely for an evening stroll and seemed busy with fisherman.
Plenty of room when we were there for football and badminton and our 12 year old soon had friends to play with each night.
The nearest shop up the road is amazingly well stocked - selling wine, beer and local cider too.
Overall we were most impressed and hope to return next year for a break.

Just returned to caravanning after an absence of 25 years, so much of my last week was 'new' to me. However, really impressed by this campsite, and spent an extremely relaxing week there, no pressure, no hassle, weather great.
Central EHU's mean that vans and tents that require it seem to radiate from these central points like a bursting flower when the site becomes busy, as it did just before we left. No fixed places to pitch, the friendly welcome from the lady of the site was just 'go where you like', and so I did. Toilet block was large, always available, massive shower rooms alongside the equally large toilet cubicles. Though I'm not a user, the washing up facilities for tents was very good. Waste sorting bins in front of the block had me trotting across as soon as I had something I could easily sort, waste disposal and grey water disposal easy and accessible. Loads of space for children, none of which caused any problems for this middle aged couple. The short walk to the lakes in the evening is highly recommended. Take binoculars!
Downsides? Quite a distance from local attractions, so a car for the towns, or a bike for the beautiful churches in the villages essential. On arrival, I was asked if I was there for the one night or longer, despite having booked a full weeks stay in advance. Fortunately, loads of space, so not an issue.

Perfect for the fisherman - lakes just down the lane.
Good for the dog owners as dogs are allowed to walk around the lakes but we always keep our labrador on a lead otherwise he'd be in and eating the fish!
Good camping fields mostly open but some around the edge and others amongst the small apple trees of an old orchard.
Electric points are scattered but you should always be able to find one and connect to where you want to pitch (long cable makes this 100% achievable).
No shop to speak of but very friendly staff; adequate facilities, especially since the new unit built, and they are close to the best spots for a tent unlike some other sites where the facilities all tent users need is amongst the caravans.
Nothing flashy but very comfortable and friendly.

Booked onto this site for 2 weeks - and stayed for 4. Wonderful site, Toilets are not 'fancy' but are very functional, and most importantly, clean! The whole aim of the site is that you have a relaxing, stress free holiday.
The location is great, within easy access of several National Trust properties, and Yeovil is within easy reach with major supermarkets if required.
Very good community run shop about 5 minutes drive away. Have to say didn't use the 'local' pub - next village - but heard from some of the people that did that the food was disappointing.
I know this site prides itself on its fishing lakes, but from this non fishing person, the location and the overall atmosphere should not be missed by anyone.

Updated review. Last visited 2011.
Thorney Lakes is fast becoming our favourite site ever, only 45 minutes from home for us but could be a world away. Everytime we come here we have a fanastically relaxing stay. Price wise it offers excellent value for money. They still do not charge for dogs and it is one, if not THE best dog friendly sites around in the South West.
Brand new shower block in converted stables is great ~ hubby said best showers he had ever been in. Consists of 4 very large 'private cubicles' (loo, shower, sink) with loads of hanging hooks, large bench to sit on and place stuff and massive amount of space to get changed in.
For those who say there should be a play area ~ absolutely not! Thorney is about traditonal camping where children make their own entertainment, there is plenty of room for all and no marked pitches so you are never crammed in (site never appears overcrowded) and we've seen kite flying and children playing around without causing any disturbance. Also a large flat field area down the little lane towards the lakes away from the pitches is ideal for a kickabout with a football, or a game of rounders etc (little children supervised by an adult of course).
Kingsbury Community Shop is approx 1. 5 miles down the road in Kingsbury Episcopi ~ ideal for those forgotten items and quite well stocked for a little village shop.
The 'nippy chippy' chip van called at Thorney Lakes on the Friday evening and very nice they were too! Ice cream van called on the Sunday afternoon.
To sum up - I've come home feeling totally relaxed and rejuvenated after a break at Thorney Lakes. Ideal for those who seek peaceful, rural camping. Camp in the lush green apple orchard, walk around the picturesque lakes, perfect for dog owners. Very laid back, lovely owners and site ~ 10 out of 10 from us, I hope Thorney Lakes never changes ~ an absolute GEM of a site!

Just spent a great week-end at Thorney lakes, found the camp site large but well kept, a new toilet block had been built and was just opened, making two large toilet blocks on site.
The site staff were very friendly and helpful, Just two small criticisms of the site It could do with a play area as there were nothing to amuse the children, and there was no soap in the toilet areas to was your hands, but these are small minor points.
A Chip van calls on a Friday evening so this was a welcomed break from the cooking! There is a small village just down the road within walking distance.
The lakes are away from the site by are beautifully kept, we were not able to fish as the weather was so bad the week-end we stayed there.
Overall I would recommend this site especially if you are a fisherman or just want a quiet time.

Just returned from Thorney Lakes, our 1st visit to this site ( was recommended by a fellow caravanner ).
We were definitely not disappointed, from the time we pulled in we had a extremely warm welcome, were told all the basic rules, hints a tips, and told to pitch where we wanted 7 could leave anytime on the day of departure.
Our 2 dogs loved all the well mown dog walks, and all the Guinea fowl around the fishing lake.
New toilet/shower block near completion. Highly recommended site to relax in peaceful surroundings.

We really enjoyed our stay here. It's nice to be given the choice of where to park-up and so long as you have a good length hook-up cable, you can really get some space.
The site is a good size and the surrounding fields and lakes are a nice walk for the dogs without having to drive anywhere.
The facilities were ok and the water hot. Would have been nice if soaps could be added to the wash basins.
The local area has plenty to do, the cider brandy distillery was great and very generous with the samples! Also, the smokery sells some nice nibbles for afterwards. The only downside was that although the pub is nearby (1. 5-2 miles away), the only way we could find to walk there was along the road.
Definitely a site we hope to go back to.

We chose this campsite from reviews on this site (this is how we chose all our sites) we were looking for a site so we could visit the Bath & West Show so didn't spend a huge amount of time on the site as we were only there for the weekend.
We arrived about 6pm and got a warm welcome when we checked in, I'd read other reviews saying you could pitch where you wanted and was a bit concerned about that but I can see why this works now. We were told pitch wherever you want and at whatever angle you want, very unusual. We went down to the bottom of the field and pitched under the trees, looking back up through the site. It was lovely.
Facilities were a bit basic, but plenty of room. As mentioned previously 3 loos & 2 showers for women. I did feel that a mop in the showers would have been a good idea as the floors were quite messy most of the time, and a cloth in the sinks would perhaps encourage others to wipe them out after use. We showered in the evenings and there was always plenty of hot water and no queing at all.
It was lovely watching children kick a ball and fly kites as there was plenty of room for them to do that. There were quite a few children on the site (we didn't have any, there was just the two of us)but they weren't noisy at all, maybe it was because they had to make their own entertainment, as there wasn't a playground.
Lovely walks around the lake to round off the day, and would definitely return to this site so we can do some walking/cycling as we didn't have long enough there this time.

Just got back from an absolutely idyllic week at Thorney Park. Arrived at 10am and was told they were happy to accept us anytime after 8am! No deposit required before hand and we could pitch anywhere we liked.
The 2 showers/toilet facilities for either sex, 2 washing up sinks and the unisex toilet were more than adequate for our visit.
The surrounding area is spectacular for walking, with a good pub at Kingsbury Episcopi (Wyndum Arms)1.5 miles away. If you've got a dog, we've a Lab, you needn't leave the site to exercise it as there are dog walks aplenty.
There is a large fishing lake, for the Anglers in any family, but very little to keep the kids busy, no play area. This site is perfect for chilling out and relaxing and I would definitely visit here again.
