After reading the index for the facilities for the campsite I decided to stay one night.
I was on a 2 day course some 3 miles away from the site.
The toilets and shower block was nice and the site very large although there were not a lot of people there. Nice area to walk my dog.
The down side of the site was that the information sent was not very clear.
The key indicates that there is a cafe and bar (The Hexagon) which is shown on the small map sent to me.
This is not open once the park is closed. There was no indication of when the gate would be closed.
The gate man was not very helpful about any information.
Very basic site. Would think twice about staying again.

We stayed at the Wickstead Park at a cost of £15 per night. That was for a 4-man tent.
A good amount of detail was sent through the post after we booked so we were pleased with that(even though we'd visited the park a few times before we'd never camped so it was good to have extra details)
We arrived at around 5pm on the friday night, told were to head for and off we went, when actually arriving at the camping field it was unclear where we were to pitch, there were no marked areas or anyone around to ask (apart from other campers) the site is surrounded by hedgerows but we chose a spot above a slope not too far from the toilet/shower block.
The toilet/shower facilities are new and very impressive with hot showers (even at 5am!) and free hairdryers, plenty of toilet cubicles and sinks. Also 3 larger separate family / disabled toilet / shower rooms.
There were enough water stations positioned around the camp-site for clean drinking water and waste facilities.
Washing up sinks were in the same area as the toilet / shower block and could have been slightly bigger (or at least a little more space around the sinks)
The site doesn't have a shop/store for campers but in easy cycling / car drive distance there are plenty of stores (Tesco, Morrisons etc as well as local shops)
The campsite gives access to the open areas of Wickstead Park after the Park has closed, including walks around the lakes and use of the small play-areas and sandpit with lots of widlife to be seen. Plenty of room to kick a football around.
I would recommend this site, especially if it was in conjunction with a visit to the park itself and the lovely nearby Stanwick Lakes.
All in all, would stay again. Hopefully this review will be of use to potential campers.

We stayed for 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) and were very impressed. Lovely new shower block and toilets. We liked the family rooms which each had a shower, basin and toilet and were very roomy.
There were only 2 washing up sinks and they only had cold water, but it just meant boiling the kettle or nipping in to the toilet block for some hot water.
Site was a bit noisy but security (who patrolled periodically) kept any noise in order and after 11pm it was quiet. There was a number to call for security on the booking confirmation if needed too which was reassuring.
Would definitely camp here again. A brilliant setting with the lake, railway, park and play areas. All for £15 per night. 10 out of 10.

We stayed here last year for one night and loved it, decided to go back again this year as we had half price tickets for the park,
There is a new toilet block this year very clean and nice smelling never used showers so cant comment on these also the washing up area we never used.
A big field to camp in you can pitch anywhere it was very busy and although there is a 10pm noise rule hardly anyone kept to this meaning it was very noisy till the early hours not helped by the group of 4 adults who decided to play drunken football and swearing like troopers at 5 am around everyones tent, I never saw any one come round checking at night although the bins were emptied a few times a day
Nice place but better when its quieter

Stayed here for two nights with a tent and 3 young children. Arrived late (7.30pm) due to traffic and drove straight to camping field where I had to ask another camper if it was ok to pitch as no one was around to ask. Camping field very large with one toilet shower area which was good as it has family bathrooms and although it was busy never had to wait. The only problem is that we were at the other end of the field so had to use the car to get there, two washing up bowls provided with only cold water. The field was rather messy, cigarette ends all over our pitch. Other campers very inconsiderate, beeping horns and swearing until 5am. Lots of big groups of tents which is very intimidating when you have a young family. Park ok, very expensive. Saw wardens occasionally drive round, they didn't stop all the noise and loud music that was occurring way past the 10pm curfew.

We stayed here a couple of years ago when we visited the Festival of History and although it was basic it suited us very well. We decided to do this again this year and were pleased to note that they had installed a toilet block (only portaloos last time) however there is still no electric and no shop or other campsite facilities.
We arrived at teatime on Friday after some very heavy rainshowers however the field had soaked up the rain very nicely. It is a huge field and you can pitch where ever you want. There is no warden - just a security guard on the main park entrance some distance away. There is absolutely minimum security as anyone can come onto the camping field at any time.
The new toilet block is very new (in fact they were still painting it when we got there) and is ok, however there are no hooks for hanging anything up near the showers and nowhere to put a toiletry bag near the sinks. There is also a lot of decking around the block which is treacherous when wet (as my son can attest as he took a huge tumble). There are no mats at the doorway so the floor was awash with mud. The other major issue with the block is that there is only 1 pot wash sink.
The site this year was totally packed and there was no plan to where people pitched which ended up with us being totally boxed in by huge corrals of tents. The huge amount of people meant that the mud in and around the toilet block got worse and by teatime on Saturday evening there was no loo roll left in the ladies loos and several of the toilets were blocked. As there are no staff around they stayed like this until 9am Sunday.
The biggest problem for me was the unbelievable noise on Saturday night. There was a dragonboat race event planned for Sunday and the event organisers decided to play music, outside at disco volume just the other side of the hedge to the campsite. This went on until midnight. Other campers were also playing music and making a lot of noise (some until 1am). This despite the notices stating no noise after 10pm, of course because there are no staff on site there is no one to enforce this rule. In 20 years of camping the only time I have stayed at a noisier campsite was at a music festival!
This site has potential but unless they start to run it with a warden, electricity and better security then we will not be returning.

Thought it was ok for a couple of nights of camping.
Toilets are a bit bad and the showers are as well but you get what you pay for. Also there is no places to wash up, we had to do ours in the showers sink.
The camping area is big so you can choose where you would like to pitch.
The rides are ok and the park is really good. Long walks if you have dogs.
They said there are going to be changes in 2010 to make the camping facilities a lot better.

Just returned from our 2 night visit to Wickstead Park with friends with their tent. We certainly wouldn't return in a hurry. We were situated a little way down from the portaloos and boy did we know it! They were minging the whole time. The toilets in the building block never had toilet roll but we always went prepared! There is nowhere for campers to wash their dishes, the showers were large but as long as you like them cold! The field was great for kids to play cricket and football. Feel they really need to improve on facilities before calling it a campsite. Wickstead park is a fantastic place for the kids and you can take dogs which is great. Some activities you are still expected to pay for ie £2 for 6 water bombs - bit of a cheek when you have already paid £15 for a wristband. Highly recommended for a day visit but don't recommend to an overnight stay.

Visited for the first time last weekend. If you want a site with loads for the kids to do this is it. £12 a night for the tent, an absolute bargain, and we used tesco vouchers for the rides so had 4 days of theme park for the cost of the camping! As mentioned in other reviews the portaloos were disgusting by Sunday night but they were being serviced Monday morning when we left. Paid for the shower key but 4 of the showers were not locked from the outside so would look to see the situation before I paid again. Was glad to have washing up stand as there were no facilities for this (unless I missed something). Bins emptied daily and security did regular sweeps. A very calm place will definitely return.

We arrived to our pitch which was a nice clean surrounding, litter free. The site has a small adventure park, which could be covered in an hour. We were very disappointed with the toilet/shower facilities. The toilet was a pokey place, with not even a handbasin to wash your hands. There was no lighting at night time to direct you as to where the toilets were. As for the showers, well they were painfully slow with no pressure whatsoever to leave you feeling refreshed, it was literally a dribble of water. We went for a drink in what we thought would be a nice cosy little pub however it was a cafe more or less with a few bottles behind the counter, which was closed by 9pm. You can enter the adventure park 10 pound per adult/15 pound per child and use the rides as many times as you like which was good. Its takeaways are very expensive 6 pound for nuggets, chips and small drink. There is a nice cosy pub 5mins walk from the park(exit the park, turn left, at the traffic lights take a right and walk down the road 50m
