On the whole this is a good site with good facilities for children and large pitches. When booking, we were asked if we wanted sun, sun and shade or shade which was great and then sent a map for us to see where all the pitches were. The fact that the half sun/shade pitches were beside the sanitary block meant we chose the sunny location. The lake is ok to swim in if you don't mind murky looking water but must have been clean as it was fab for fishing (according to a friend who said he would have paid £15 a day to fish near London for such a well stocked lake) One of my criticisms of the site was that they ran out of gas at one of the sanitary blocks and this meant no hot water for five days and even then it was barely warm for a couple more days. The water in the outdoor pool was very cold too - colder than the sea in Brittany a fortnight earlier. The staff were not perturbed about the lack of hot water and quite a few campers did complain as some had a bit of a trek to the only other block. My biggest problem was the area - a long drive to anything worth seeing. We normally like to cycle to villages etc even if just for a coffee but the villages were closed!

We had real mixed feelings about this site. It's a lovely setting with a mix of shady sites in the wood, and no shade out of the wood. All of the pitches were a great size and the sanitary facilities excellent. We had a laugh in the bar in the evenings, really enjoyed a meal in the restaurant, and also thought the take-away pizzas were delicious. Everyone we met was friendly and there was a good atmosphere on site. The outdoor pool was fun, and we thought the grassy slope was a brilliant idea to provide extra sunbathing space whilst still being able to watch the children. It was extremely rainy while we were there and the tiny indoor pool was dangerously crowded every day with loads of kids bombing and smashing balls around. On the down side we thought the Les Castels staff knew the site was nice and did the absolute bare minimum to keep it ticking over. The reception staff weren't helpful or welcoming, we didn't know which kids club to go to, the notice boards were broken and out of date, the indoor pool should at least have been supervised when raining. One day there was a flash flood, loads of people got flooded both in the wood and at the top, and they could not have cared less. It was 4 days before they brought sand round to get rid of the deep mud on affected pitches and then only if you put your case to reception. The local village looks lovely and the auberge serves lovely food. It's a 10-15 min quiet walk with the children with plenty of blackberries on the way, so perfectly manageable! Usse, Chennonceau and Tours are nearby and all are great visits with children too.

I worked at this campsite for three months last summer and I have to say it was the best summer of my life! Im not bias the campsite is ace, we as couriers really do just want our customers to have the best stay there and it helps that the campsite is so great! Yes to opt for a sunny tent or caravan site, the shadier ones are nearer the gorgeous lake but a bit cold. Although in the hot months a sunnier tent is ouch! The facilities are great, swimming pool, large slides, much fun, restaurant is not the best but the village restaurant is the best there is and we always went their, easy walking distance. Oh and the area is all flat, great for cycling. Bit expensive the shop (great fresh bread daily!) is as is the use of bikes, and internet but I disagree about the bar, good service and great amateur entertainment that stops at 11, closes at 12. The lake is a great get away spot, quite one side, beachy the other, zip slide provides great fun for the older kids. Theres even a bus that costs a mear 2 euros 30 to get to the lovely city of Tours, which has its own airport, (daily flight from london stansted, so no need for a car even) which then has a great shopping area and link to the train station that gets you to Paris in under a hour! Amazing! I cant express how great this campsite is, I get tearful when I discuss my time there, everyone is so welcome and you constantly feel safe, relaxed and smiled! As I said im trying to not be bias, but im takin my kids there when I get married!

We loved it! Two teenagers in a tent need entertaining and this site/area has everything they want! Great for bike rides, really good pool area and the zip wires across the lake were amazing. A really friendly family site. Well stocked shop, take away pizzas were ok, but village restaurants worth the walk. I would agree with the other reviews, go for a sunny pitch, the ones in the woods looked really dark. Nicely placed for seeing parts of the Loire valley, but we were happy enough to spend some days on site as well, letting the boys do their own thing and catching up on our reading.

Stayed here twice, once in 2001 in a Keycamp tent, then for three weeks last year in our own A Wynnster Satellite 12) On booking you are asked whether you prefer a sunny or a shaded pitch. My advice is to take sunny, because the shaded pitches are very shaded indeed, and won't dry out if the weather's wet. One can always put a gazebo or something up if it's too sunny. Has a good restaurant and a fairly new large bar area - not cheap, but where is in France? Also a relatively big shop on site with good opening hours. Toilets and showers are kept clean and are well-ventilated. Pools are good, with good slides for the kids (& big kids). Village od Ste-Catherine is 5 - 10 mins walk with an excellent auberge - v friendly as long as you give their language a go, 1st-class inexpensive food. Well-placed for exploring the Loire. Old part of Tours is highly recommended. On the whole, well recommended.

We stayed here in a static caravan, this is a nice site. We had a great pitch with lots of room but beware there were some awful pitches like the one that was overlooked from 10 am until 7 pm by everyone queuing for the water slides. It has a nice pool area with slides for the children. There is a restaurant on site that was just OK. We found the food in the restaurant in the village to be first class and it is a very nice stroll to the village from the site. There is a bar on site with an arcade area. There is some amateur entertainment such as a bit of a disco and karaoke (which I cannot stand). There is a shop on site that sells the basics and has fresh bread and croissants each morning. As we were in a static I cannot comment on the showers etc. You are in easy reach of some of the lovely chateau of the Loire from this site. The Son et Lumiere at Azay Le Rideau is not to be missed. You can also visit Futuroscope from this site although it is over an hours drive away. Overall I would recommend this site, this is also a lovely part of France to visit.

We stayed here in summer of 2005 (in a hired caravan not our own.) Loads of space for the kids to play including a full size football pitch, there are two pools although the indoor pool is a bit dodgy, beware when walking on the decked area surrounding it, in bare feet. Facilities on site are fine, restaurant / take away is basic / limited but reasonable quality, site is clean, loads of showers etc. Outdoor pool is nice but a lot smaller than the pictures suggest, it does get crowded. The lake is great for swimming in, gently sloping and not as cold as you would expect.
The local village is walking distance away (a reasonable walk), small with a restaurant, which serves excellent food but when we went, was absolutely full of flies - I don't just mean an odd one or two. About 10 minutes drive away is the village of St Catherine, there is a pizzeria at one corner of the main square, which doesn't look anything special but serves really great Pizzas.
