This was our first visit to this campsite and we really enjoyed it. It was easy to find and well signed posted, check in was easy and quick.

We booked an extra big pitch for our tent which could have fitted out Montana 6 in twice. Pool area was brilliant but we struggled to get sun loungers due early risers and their towels.

Shower areas and toilets were nice and clean but few in numbers and resulted in some waiting time. The food at the snack bar was great and was the usual burgers and fries.

On our last night we took up the option of staying in an accommodation block for free which meant we could pack everything away and get a good start to out journey back, this was a good little touch by the campsite and something I would recommend.

We stayed here for 2 weeks in August. It is a lovely family site with the Large pitches being just that. The pools are great, all be it a little cold, but nice to cool down in on a hot sunny day. There was plenty on offer for young children including play park, sand pits, bouncy castle, daily tractor ride(which takes 50 minutes!) and a kids club, all of which are free, and a football field and tennis courts for older children, not forgetting the waterslide and rapids. There are showers/toilets on each field and they are kept very clean, and it ws rare to have to queue for them. We did not attend any of the evening entertainment so am not able to comment on that. There is a lovely wooded walk down to the Lake where there are boats/watersports activities.

The site is about 15 mins from local beaches.

There are lots of cycle paths in the area.

I'll start off by saying that the last review of this site dated August 2010 was excellent.

Here is my not so detailed view!

We also travelled from Portsmouth to Le Havre (I will use this route as often as possible now, so much easier than Dover - Calais).

We were a day late in arriving due to car trouble (bloomin French cars - at least I'd have found a spare part if it'd broken down over there!) I had several emails with the reception team over the days before we went which were always answered promptly, when we got there the welcome and details given to us were excellent, the receptionist also spoke very good English.

My sister-in-law and friend had got there the day before us so were already set up and had the wine waiting for us, we knew that the pitches were going to be big but they were HUGE.

The site is set over several different fields and even when it is busy, when you get back to your own field it seems quiet (if that makes sense).

WE never have enough space to take the kids bikes so to be able to hire them at very reasonable rates for a week was a real blessing. Our two boys aged 14 & 12 really did love this place, they made friends with a lot of other kids and enjoyed all of the facilities that were at the site, swimming pools were great, I remembered that I could play table tennis and being able to check on the free wi-fi how the Mighty Saddlers were getting on was great!

In the locality are plenty of Supermarkets with lots of choice, the villages are also worth going to. We went to lots of lovely places Apremont was beautiful and St Gilles was quite cosmopolitan.

My wife and her sister spent an hour towards the end of our holiday looking at the perfect pitch for next year, so I guess we will be going back.

All in all a wonderful site with massive pitches and good facilities.

Just come back from 12 nights of this site and want to give my review while still fresh in my memory.

Travel:

Drove from le Havre using toll roads and took about 5 hours and 40+ euro's for tolls. I have a diesel car and prices were about 1.10E in the towns and about 1.22E on the toll roads (still a good price compared to UK).

Upon arrival:

Reception very friendly, fantastic english and full of information. The site is biased towards working with nature, they are very keen for you to recycle and protect the tree's and animals that inhabit the site (sheep, donkey, frogs, toads, bats, etc).

The pitch:

One word. Huge. We choose the biggest size pitch as I have a Hartford XL and a Honda CRV. We got both on the pitch and still had room for a washing line, bbq area and seating. Some of the pitches have a gentle slope, nothing to worry about though. Electric hookup is the standard 3 pin connection you find on most english sites.

Top tip: find out which way is north so that you can get the evening sun and not get blocked by the tree's.

General facilities:

The site is very well laid out with areas of tents / caravans and toilet blocks. It didn't feel big and exploring the different parts of the site is a good walk round.

We hired a fridge for 12 nights and thought that it was expensive for the period, however it is a normal kitchen sized fridge and very useful for keeping the wine and bbq meat cool. Oh yeah and the milk and butter to.

Toilet blocks are cleaned 3 times a day and are closed for cleaning. No matter how desperate you are! Don't forget your own loo roll and sink plug. Most of the time there were no queue's, any I did join lasted 5 minutes if that.

There is a shop on site which sells the basics (at about twice the Super you prices) and is open until 10pm.

Entertainment:

Tractor ride for kids is about 45 minutes every morning from 10am and is fairly popular.

There is also an itinerary of activities for kids and adults most days with 2 young supervisors doing the rounds. The site also brings in external entertainment which is free, this ranges from a climbing wall, trampolines, bands in the bar. Etc.

The horse-riding is cheap but is only Shetland ponies, for anything bigger there are local stables. Fishing in the big pond is also allowed but bring your own stuff.

You can hire tennis equipment for a small charge and there are 3 table tennis tables that are very popular.

There is free wifi from the bar area. Useful for checking the weather for the next day while relaxing with a beer.

Generally the place was quiet from 11pm.

General Atmosphere:

Very good and friendly. The staff make you feel relaxed and welcome. We found that the site is popular with the Dutch and a small amount of French, however it became mostly English in the last week of august. Everyone seems to get along well together.

Local:

The markets are popular and very good. They finish at 1pm though as do most of the local shops. They open again at approx 4pm. In St Gilles Croix de Vie there is a night market until midnight most evenings.

We went to the local Beef Fete on 22nd August, not much happened in the morning until they started serving the food. Good to see for a few hours and fab food.

Super U's, Hyper U's and other supermarkets are are approx 5 - 10 minute drive. Chocolate is expensive and wine fairly cheap. We found a bottle of red for 1.20 euro's and brought back 2 cases of it.

Les Sables is good for exploring especially the harbour. There are some decent boats to look at.

You are about 1 hour drive from Noirmoutier (north) and La Rochelle (South). We went to Noirmoutier and it rained, didn't feel it was worth the drive but also the rain may have dampened my expectations though.

Lac du Januay is about 15 minutes walk from the site where you can hire canoe's or pedloes. Not a bad way to while away an afternoon.

If you want to park your car, be careful of the entrance height restrictions which can range from 1.8m, 2.0m and 2.2m. The height bar can make a mess of a roofbox if you forget! Try and go about 5 minutes walk outside of where you want to go, that way you get to see the local life and usually find free parking.

Beach:

For surfers, go to the grand plage just south of the centre of St Gilles. There are toilets there (don't forget loo roll) and some restaurants. The surf can be rough with 5ft waves and there is a section of the beach that is apart especially for surfers. We took body boards and it was fine for my 6 year old with the water up to his waist, it gets stronger the further out you go. Beach itself is great, very sandy but get there before noon if you want a parking spot!

Also went to Brem sur Mer. This is also a decent beach but is a walk through the sand dunes. A lot quieter than St Gilles but little facilities.

Weather:

We all wore shorts from the moment we arrived to the day we left. Even if you get rain, it is still relatively warm. We found it to be cloudy in the morning and the sun broke through at around 11am. We the sun shines it adds about 3 - 4 degrees to the temperature. Hottest was about 28 but usually ran from 22 - 25. Its at its hottest about 2pm and with the sun out is still in mid-20's at 6pm with the beach still busy.

Had a cracking thunderstorm one night. The lightening show itself was worth the holiday.

Prices:

We found the general area to be expensive for anything (except wine. Yippee!). The on site prices of the campsite are more than the local ones however I take comfort in the fact that you get 2 swiming pools, free tractor ride, free entertainment, free wifi, etc so it balances out.

Summary:

We were there for 12 nights. We would go back as we don't feel that we saw enough of the local culture and area. Throughout the stay we did find other couples checking out which pitches are best for their return next year so this bodes well. The site is very family friendly and relaxed. We saw other sites closer to the beach where the tents were all crammed in and you were near to the road.

Our first adventure overseas with the tent. Having had a wet 10 days in Devon in 2009 thought wed try this. LOVED it!

Never seen pitches so big 250 m2, amazing. The children have so much freedom to roam and all within the sight of the tent. EHU if needed, we didn't on this occasion.

The pool has a fab rapid river and slide, there's an indoor pool also. Pizzas were lovely from the bar area. Downside would be they don't serve gin and tonic in the bar!

Didn't need to venture far from site as the children were 2 and 3 1/2, we just needed a relaxing time (stresses and strains of work and young kids had taken their toll!) and this gave us exactly that.

Booked for 2011.

We stayed here July this year, and had a fantastic holiday, pitches were spacious - even though we had one of the smaller pitches, the toilet blocks were kept spotless, friendly and helpful, even calling ahead to our next camp site for us.

The playground was well used by our 8 year old, as was the bouncy castle which was permanently there and the other activities (eg climbing walls and trampolines) which were put out every 2 or 3 days. The tractor ride around the site was always popular.

Shop was well stocked and priced competitively.

Swimming pools were well maintained with adequate supervision.

Would recommend this site, and will probably visit again ourselves next year.

This site was fabulous. Pitches were huge, pool was great and facilities of a very high standard. Reception staff spoke good english as did bar/store staff. The guests were Dutch/English with a few French and all were friendly. The shower/toilet block was cleaned 3 times per day and was spotless. Kids (age 12 and 8) had a great time - they made friends very quickly and didn't spend much time hanging out with the 'olds'. We shall be returning in 2010 - can't wait :)

We had an amazing week here. We had a super sized pitch on La Pointe. It was definitely worth the extra money as the pitch was huge and the section the nicest on the site - very spacious with plenty of room for the children to play and make friends.

The site was clean, the toilets probably the cleanest I've seen in France. The swimming pool was lovely - indoor and outdoor, waterslide and new current route. It was warm enough and popular.

The highlight was the free morning tractor ride for kids. It took them round the site for about 45 mins every day and gave us a well needed bit of peace and quiet! There was a whole range of children's and young people's activities organised throughout the day and early evening.

The staff very very helpful, the shop useful and there was a good pizza restaurant and take away.

The site was quiet too, especially at night. I would highly recommend La Guyonniere.

Fantastic site, just returned from 2 weeks and will visit again.

Booked a large pitch, room for our tent, smaller tent, car and plenty of room to sit and for the children to play. Would probably choose a different field next time tho' as some of the pitches were bigger - having said that can't complain at the size we had!

Spotless facilities cleaned 3 times a day.

Great pool, outside one is a litte deep for non-swimmers, but lazy river a big hit. Also Toddler pool and inside pool (slightly warmer).

Lots of animals, never did see the donkey but heard him most mornings! Fishing Lake, children's play area, tennis court. Excellent pizza! Small shop, just basic items, but plenty of supermarkets nearby.

Great area to explore, plenty of nice beaches nearby.

Hired a fridge, remember to take an adaptor! We forgot ours, luckily were able to borrow one, we tried all week to buy one but couldn't find one anywhere.

All in all an excellent holiday!

Fantastic site, paid for larger pitch on la pointe, faultless, massive pitch and big open spaces, it is a large site split into smaller areas and it works, you feel as if you are on a small site. Showers on our field were in demand only 3 of them but no problem, clean etc.

Pool area is the best, with indoor and outdoor (outdoor is warm enough) areas and jacuzzis, fountains, river rapids etc.

Small friendly bar with little restaraunt/ pizzeria serving basic meals at normal UK pub prices.

Mainly dutch on site, although still lots of english, the dutch are brilliant always friendly and well behaved!

Kids are too old for kids club but the morning tractor rides around the site seemed very popular.

Site is approx 8 miles (20mins) from nearby beaches (Les Dunes near Brem-su-mer is good for bodyboarding/surfing and is the nearest)

The site has a fishing pit/lake which is popular in the evenings or you can do a 5min walk down to lac Jaunay for more fishing and pedalos.

Overall very much recommended.
