We stayed here for 8 nights from 6th July 2011. Of the 3 sites we stayed at in France, this was the best. Very friendly helpful staff. Large pitches separated by hedges and trees. The site was converted from an old farm and had a very rustic feel about it. The facilities included 2 Pool, s one covered and a toddlers pool. A large play park with 2 trampolines and zip wire, pony rides and 2 ping pong tables. There is a small shop on site which was well stocked and bikes for hire. There is also a small farm, and a goat farm nearby which the children loved. The best part of the site was the view over the Loire valley, on one of the wooden benches. There is a restaurant and bar on site, with an outside terrace. There are 3 shower blocks and 2 toilet blocks. The site was busy but with so much space it was not a problem. There is a large LeClerc supermarket at nearby Saumur. Saumur is a beautiful city with the towering Chateau in the Centre. The market on Saturday is well worth a visit. Nearby there is a very good Zoo at Dou de la Fontaine, only 20 minutes away.
We would certainly go back to this site.

Reviewers - Mature Couple
This is a very attractive site just outside Saumur, on the top of a ridge overlooking the Loire. It is well looked after, with pleasant plants separating the pitches. The loos and showers were immaculate. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke good English. This proved very handy when my wife was taken ill and we needed to find a local doctor. Reception called a doctor and made an appointment for us.
We didn't realise that you could reserve extra large pitches, so ours was mid-sized but adequate for our large tent and gazebo. The pitches were all nice and grassy, with easy access to water and electric hook-ups. It is very busy in Summer, of course. The pitches with the best views of the Loire are reserved years ahead, apparently.
Facilities are good, with the main and toddler's pools and a snack bar serving pizzas and suchlike. The small shop has all the essentials and there is plenty for children to do. There's a crazy golf course which zig-zags down the slope at the side of the site and an enclosure housing quite a few goats which amused us with their antics. Because of its fairly isolated uphill location, there is no light pollution at night and with a clear sky, the view of the stars is stunning. You forget just how many there are until you see them like this. We caught a view of a satellite streaking overhead, or was it the space station? Very bright.
Saumur is nearby and is a beautiful town to visit. You can park for free near the Cavalry barracks just off Avenue du Marechal Foch. There are many good-value restaurants and bistros to choose from. The area is well-known for it's sparkling wines, which rival Champagne for quality and at a fraction of the price. The super-new E. Leclerc is wonderful for stocking up before that last drive home. Some of the sparkling wines there are an absolute steal. The wine cellars are worth a visit first, so you can decide what to buy later. I would recommend Gratien Meyer, just East of town on the D947. The Loire Valley is full of wonderful sites and chateaux, of course, so there is simply loads to see in this area.

This is a lovely site in a great location. We visited at the end of June/beginning of July and it was hot! The site was very quiet with mainly British and Dutch guests.
The site has loads of trees and flowers around. Each pitch has a hedge/trees/bushes around for privacy.
We opted for an XXL pitch to save any worries about whether we could fit our tent in. The pitch was gignormous! The disadvantage was that it had no shade at all (interestingly we weren't offered a choice of pitches as we have been on other sites). However a quick trip to the nearby Leclerc furnished us with a 3mx3m gazebo - problem solved. Still plenty of space left for the car and the kids to run around.
Most of the standard pitches seemed fairly spacious, although be aware that if you want one of the pitches with the Loire view (which is lovely), you will be packed in closer to your neighbours than you would towards the back of the site. These Loire view pitches are also close to the goats/donkey/horses so it's also worth noting that there will be a stream of small children each evening coming to feed the animals (which also escaped several times much to everyone's amusement!).
Also, it's worth being aware that some of the XXL pitches have a tree in the middle which might prove a problem if you have a very big unit.
The site facilities are very good. Lots of showers, sinks and toilets which are very clean. There is a baby bathroom with baths for those with small children (thoughtfully fitted out with mobile above changing area and baby walker to put your baby in whilst you tidy up). There is also a children's play room with a selection of rather ancient toys but it is cool in there if you visit during a period of really hot weather, as we did. There are two large trampolines and a small play area too. Although our children didn't use the kids club, the girls who run it looked like they were trying really hard and the children all looked very happy!
The swimming pools are great - two large pools, one heated and one not. There is also a children's pool which is 50cm deep and great for little kids to muck about in. There's a large area with sunloungers on around the pool but I can imagine this getting very busy in peak season.
We used the bar once - food and service were OK. The shop really only sells basics with nothing fresh apart from bread each morning. The staff in reception are very friendly and obviously keen to make sure everything is OK for you.
Saumur is a great place to stay. The town is lovely - atmospheric old square with nice restaurants with the castle towering above the river. We had a trip to the local wine cellars - can definitely recommend the tour of Bouvay Ladubay. We also went to the zoo at Doue La Fontaine which was excellent. There are plenty of chateaux to choose from - the gardens at Villandry and the Chateau at Azay le Rideau are both worth a visit. Chateau d'Usse, the 'Sleeping Beauty Castle' is the archetypal fairy tale castle from the outside. We didn't go in but
Neighbours on the site (who had a 6 year old girl) said it was fantastic. In fact there was plenty to do in the immediate region to keep us busy for two weeks.
Overall this is a great site which we would definitely visit again.

We were heading for the Dordogne but after arriving at this quiet site with friendly staff we decided to stay.
The site has good facilities although we don't use them and two very good swimming pools (one heated.
The shop keeps most of the things a Brit would want except fresh milk. The bread is great. Although we weren't there during the school hols they were getting ready for them. We gathered they put on events to keep the children amused.
It is a very quiet site with a mixture of nationalities from UK,Dutch German and Irish.
The bar puts on meals and I gather from those that used it they were realistic in price.
Wi-Fi is available at a price and any sporting event is put on the small TV in the bar (World Cup.
There are no shops locally so a trip to Saumur is required. It is a nice town and parking is usually available. Local atraction are the mushroom museum and the wine caves. (Good cheap wine). There is also a fascinating model cave which is worth a visit.
We will go again as it was one of the most relaxing holidays we have had in France.

We stayed here for 5 nights at the end of August. We hadnt booked but the site was easily able to accommodate us as it was only about 50% full. We were advised to walk around site and choose a pitch and as all the Loire view pitches (which looked fabulous)were taken we chose a huge pitch backing onto a field where horses were kept. The pitch was huge and even our big motorhome and day tent looked lost on it! Long leads are needed from some pitches as the EHU points are only every few pitches. Our 25m lead was just long enough. Our stay was very good value, they reduced the site fee due to the time of year so our bill on the day of departure was a very pleasant surprise!
The site was really well kept with lovely planting and flowers everywhere. The loos and showers were very clean. The pool area was nice with enough loungers but I can imagine when the site is full it would be a bit cosy and difficult to get a chair. The pool with the retractable cover was lovely and warm but the outside pool was freezing and on the small size. We didn't use the takeaway or cafe as it was only open very limited hours as it was very near the end of their season.
The site is really well placed for days out, Saumur market on a Saturday morning was good and we found parking for the motorhome alongside the river. As it was our last site of the holiday we didn't venture out much as we wanted to relax on site and it was also very hot.
Overall we liked the site but wouldn't return as with the motorhome we prefer sites with things within walking/cycling distance. For those with caravans and tents I can highly recommend it.

We arrived on a scorching hot day (mid 30's) and were not looking forward to putting up our Gelert Zenith 8 tent. The lady in Reception was charming and helpful and gave a very helpful description of the site and its facilities.
Our Pitch (L5) was one of the 'Loire View' pitches and when we drove the short distance from reception to the pitch - we were not disappointed. Breathtaking! A fabulous unspoilt view over the winding Loire with Saumur in the distance! It was glorious. The pitch was large enough for the HUGE Zenith 8 and did have access to an electric hook up - though we did not make use of it.
The toilet block and showers were a short distance away and were always being cleaned by someone so were generally scrupulously clean.
Plenty of hot water in the showers though some of the push-buttons gave as little as 10 seconds of water so the trick was finding one which gave more than a minute! (there were several).
The shop was very basic, but adequate, and opened in the morning and late afternoon selling baguettes and croissants though they often sold out or needed to cook a fresh batch (15 minutes). We tended to buy the milk and bread there and shopped for main things in the large Leclerc Supermarket in Saumur (10 mins away and easy to find). Wine was available on site (surprisingly good) sourced from their sister campsite nearby which is on a vineyard.
We didn't use the Bar/restaurant but the menu seemed fairly standard/basic (Pizza, meat dishes, chips etc) but was well used by visitors so can't have been bad. The pools were good and clean - an indoor/covered and heated pool was lovely and an outdoor pool alongside it which wasn't heated and (according to my family) was rather cold! We stuck to the heated one. Men/boys please note that you are not allowed to wear bermuda shorts styled swimming gear - it has to be speedos or trunk style shorts (aaargh). This seems to be a common theme in French campsites (is it law in France?) and necessitated a trip to Leclerc to buy some cheap trunks as we forgot about it!
There were many children's activities on site and facilities (though my youngest is almost 17 so we didn't make use of them) and a large entertainment marquee for the youngsters and some organised events like a mini disco and craft working. Seemed well organised.
Also various animals such as goats, chickens, pot bellied pig and ponies were popular with the youngsters.
The site was about 6Km from Saumur and easy to find though signposting from Saumur takes you inland away from the river and through a rather tortuous route. Essentially, you need to take the exit on the roundabout leaving Saumur towards Gennes which follows the river and you'll pass all the wine merchants/caves and the Mushroom museum(!) and then look for a turning on the left signposted for Chantepie (it's easy to miss so look out for it) and then follow it up to the top of the hill. Turn left again at the top then you'll see the entrance to the site a few hundred metres on the left. Easy!
DO make sure you visit one of the wine caves to have a wine tasting. We went to the Ackerman one (most of them are on the main road through St Hilaire/St Florent which you pass through when going to or from Saumur). We had a super (FREE) tasting of 5 different sparkling wines (there's a bucket for the unlucky driver to spit out his tastings if necessary)and you can also do a tour of the caves where all the wine is stored. There's a 1.50euro charge per head for this but they said the 4 of us could go in free (as the boss was away!) and perhaps because I indicated I'd be buying a few bottles of wine? There are 7km of caves! but the tour takes you through a small fraction of that and it's actually really informative and beautifully lit. Beware though - it's a constant 12degrees C so it's very chilly - if it's a hot day outside and you come in wearing shorts and T shirt, it will be VERY chilly! All in all - well recommended, and actually one of our highlights (other winemakers are available, but Chantepiue Reception mentioned Ackerman and we were impressed).
We visited many Chateaux and we did a day trip to Poitiers to Futuroscope which was quite fun but VERY tiring - especially as the finale light show was at 22:45 at night - and NOT TO BE MISSED. Quite amazing laser, water fireworks and some breathtaking special effects.
All in all, we thought the camp site was very, very good - possible the best we'd ever been to and we'd certainly go back if we get the chance.
The view clinched it and the general peace and tranquility and slightly remote location. Everything we were looking for - along with friendly staff, beautifully kept facilities and grounds and convenient location for exploring the region. You won't regret it.

My other half had been here as a child and after some searching we found it and booked an 'Emplacement Loire' overlooking the river. We arrived during the obligatory 2 hour lunch break but found our name and pitch number helpfully pinned to the reception door. Pitched and settled in.
The facilities are second to none. Lots of clean showers with hot water. Loads of pot wash sinks and plenty of toilets too. The site closed the day after we were due to leave so it was very quiet which may have helped with the lack of queues and cleanliness of the facilities. Only the main pool was open and it was a touch chilly but I'm sure it was just fine in August.
The shop was great for bread and croissants and any last minute items. There were mixed messages about where to park. The site rules said no parking on the pitches but there were only visitor parking bays and nowhere near enough space to park cars other than on the pitches. Be warned - some pitches are small and parking a car alongside your van/tent could be tough. We managed - just! We are planning to go next year with some friends and will go for an XXL pitch. We picked up a map of the site so know where the big pitches are and their proximity to hook-ups which another reviewer commented on. This could be a big issue as the h/u stands are few and far between.
We wouldn't bother with the Mushroom Museum or the neighbouring sculpture caves - we spent a total of 30 minutes in both having read about the hours worth of attractions in each. Save your money. With a campsite this good - you will only be venturing out for the sake of 'seeing France'. We drove to Angers for lunch and couldn't wait to get back to the tranquil roads of Saumur. The French cities are not for the faint-hearted motorists - you've been warned.
All in all, a great site and we would highly recommended it for families and couples alike. A must in our book!

A lovely site. Its easily found but the directions on their website take you right around the houses which when you are towing a caravan is not ideal. Its much easier to take the main road alongside the Loire from St Hilaire to Gennes and then follow the signs and turn left after the Mushroom Museum.
The pitches were all great. We had a Loire view pitch which was wonderful. The facilities are great. Lots of hot water, 2 pools and a playground for the kids. The bar / restaurant is fine if a little pricey.
The kids loved meeting the donkey who brays in a comical way every time someone arrives to see him.
There is plenty to do locally. I would highly recommend Zoo de Doue. Its a great day out. Saumur is pretty but difficult to find a parking space in.
Excellent site which is run well by a few able bodied people with the help of quite a few people with learning/physical problems.
We`ll be returning.

We booked this site in the October before we went as we wanted one of their ‘new’ Pitch XXL’s and at 200m2 we weren’t disappointed! The site itself is easy to find, clearly signposted off the main roundabouts in Saumur and is about 5 minutes drive into the town centre, where there are any number of shops and restaurants. Located on a high terrace the sites (and especially the Loire view pitches) have fabulous views over the Loire River up to Saumur and beyond.
Reception staff were initially very pleasant when checking in but when we arrived at our pitch we discovered we were at least 35metres from the nearest electricity point – Reception staff were then very unhelpful, telling us that maybe they had some extension cables that we could borrow – in a couple of days when some had been returned! Another camper told us that this was not uncommon and that they had to go down to LeClerc and buy a cable. So off we had to go – cost us another 10E! Be aware!
Our pitch had a large hedge behind it – then vineyards – and some trees for shade, as did all the pitches, but some of them were much smaller so phone and check your unit fits before booking!
The children loved the pool area – no lifeguard so watch them carefully - the largest of the pools is heated and goes from 1.5 – 1.8m roughly and has a roof, so we could swim even in a rainshower and there were lots of loungers around the pool. The play area was very safe for our two and they loved the ponies that were available for rides (2.50E) My DH agrees with the opinion of ‘Gus the mad pony’ so opt for Nougat if you can!
The restaurant was very popular and reasonably priced with a lovely terrace overlooking the river and the toilet blocks were modern and regularly cleaned. There is also a ‘baby bathroom’ and laundry/tumble drier (5E)
Location wise it is perfect for visiting the chateaux of the area (Saumur, Usse, Villandry etc) the mushroom museum close by is expensive and we probably wouldn’t recommend it. However the zoo at Doue is a lovely day out, even on a very hot day as there are lots of trees for shade / shelter if it rained!
Lots of Dutch / English and French using the site – especially the Dutch – the Kid’s Club for example was run by Dutch staff and was mostly in Dutch!
I would recommend this site for a 2 week holiday as we did or as a stopover site on the way South.

Folding Camper
Agree with pretty well everything others have said.
An excellent site to 'do' the lower end of the chateau bashing route. A week here and a week higher up the Loire gives a pretty good spread of the region. Probably more son et lumiere shows further up the Loire (Chambord, Blois, Azay, Chenonceaux being the best).
As well as the chateaux mentioned in previous reviews, try to fit in Angers. It is atypical. More of a fort than a clssy residence. But houses the biggest/oldest set of tapestries in France (makes the Bayeux look like childs play!). And the German graffiti from 2nd world war along the top walls are interesting!
We did use the restaurant. Found it great!
