We chose this site, as we were going to Southend On Sea for the Airshow, We arrived and found the tenting field very easily, After we pitched up we took a walk to the toilets, we were given a code, Well. It was in a porter cabin, and it is just one bathroom with a toilet and shower, which means that if you are in the shower, nobody else can use the toilet! one toilet for the whole site! And it wasn't even clean, we stayed 3 days and in that time never saw anyone clean it, It had mold and lots of spiders everywhere, which meant getting the kids to use it wasn't easy! They do have toilets in the Barleylands center itself, but these are only open during the day and it's quite a walk esp with kids dying for the loo, We also didn't feel very safe there at the weekends, as there were football matches on the fields next to the tenting field, which means you have all sorts of people walking around who aren't your fellow campers, so be careful with your personal belongings. We really felt let down by the lack of facilities and it really needs sorting! We wont be going back.

Stayed at Barleylands, our first ever camping experience.
Chose this site as it's just a 10 minute drive for us. Having a slightly hyperactive 4 year old son (and 6 year old daughter too), we weren't sure if we were ready for 'sleeping under canvas' quite yet.
The children behaved themselves allowing us time to pitch out 4-man pop-up Quechua tent and Coleman Event Shelter.
The site itself is a large field surrounded by other large fields used for other activities including several football pitches, an 'events' field and, believe it or not, growing various food and vegetables.
There is a large portable cabin which has a toilet and shower situated at the edge of the field. In addition, there are both showers and toilets (including disabled facilities) located by the main entrance.
There's no playground for kids, but plenty of room to do whatever activities you wish. We had a game of rounders / softball / baseball, football, using a full size set of goal posts located in the middle of the field, used frisbees and generally let the children run free.
In the evening we let off several Chinese Lanterns, as the views are totally unobstructed.
Best of all, camp fires are allowed, so we built one of these, the first time our children have ever seen one!
There's a weekly Car Boot Sale every Sunday morning on an adjoining field. It's far enough away so as not to disturb you, from a noise perspective, but close enough to walk to and have a look.
With the addition of being located next door to the main 'farm' part of Barleylands. This is pay-at-the-door attraction. It costs £7 or £8 (child / adult prices). You can easily spend several hours seeing the animals, feeding them and using both indoor and outdoor play areas.
Added to this, there are approximately 30 small independent shops selling everything from candles to sweets to pictures, all arranged in an 'old style' barn.
You're just 5 minutes drive from Basildon, and Billericay in the opposite direction, so plenty of major stores just a short trip away.
Overall, this is a very peaceful and spacious site, and with some investment, it could be a VERY good site.

We just returned from Barelyland and it had some real benefits as well as drawbacks. Easy to get to, inexpensive, not highly populated, generally quiet, and between the farmers market and the boot fair, a fun weekend.
On the down side, the washroom(s) was 'disappointing'. There are two areas for this important function, one being inside the actual retail area, the other being at the far end of the caravan / tenting area. Once visiting hours are over (5PM), both sets of washrooms are closed, except for the handicapped ones. This wouldn't be bad, except that the tenting area facilities have both the toilet and the shower in the same room, so if you're taking a shower, no one else can access the facilities. Bad idea for those with young children.
As well, having only 2 toilets to accommodate a large number of tents and caravans is a challenge. If these people would install a dedicated toilet/shower facility, this would be a wonderful place to go.

They gave us our own part of the field as there was a big group of us. Loads of space to pitch, toilets and showers a few minutes walk from where we pitched.
The gates were locked in the evening so you needed a code to get in, which stopped anybody just driving in. Lovely lake to walk round, plenty of space for us all to play.
Great farmers market and 2 boot sales while we were there. Large Asda only a few minutes drive from the site.
Lovely shops and very helpful staff, will definitely be going back.

Just returned from a lovely weekend camping at Barleylands. There is now a shower and toilet with washing up facilities. New and kept clean.
Great location and very good value. Plenty of space and great for the kids.
Need to ensure main gates are kept locked as on our first night a number of cars were being driven round the main Barleylands car park and making a lot of noise!
But would definitely return.

Just come home from a weekend away at barleylands, I was a bit wary having read the previous reviews !
I found the site to be really good ,only £7 a night for a start ! there was no shop though as mentioned in listing also no washing up facilities. The toilets are a bit of a trek but the exercise is good and we had a portaloo for the nights !
They was clean on the numerous visits we had over the weekend and the showers was good and fairly clean ,have seen much worse !
You can pitch anywhere you like which is a rare thing nowadays ! ground was good although grass a bit long !
We went into the farm during our visit £22 for a family of 4 .
That is good value we went in the morning then came back to the tent for lunch then went back cause its a wristband system.
The craft centre ok just lots of very nice expensive shops. Although the old fashioned sweetie shop was good !
The farmers market was good on saturday we got most of our fresh food there for the weekend, fresh bread, cheese, milk, sausages, cakes, fruit, veg etc. Then on Sunday a car boot sale, brilliant!

Would I take my family back again? NO!
FACILITIES:
Toilets are used by campsite & general public visiting Barleylands, so as you can imagine they are quite a state. The toilet block is a good 6 minutes walk from the main campsite & consists of 2 showers, plus male & female toilets. There were no plugs in the gents sinks, making it impossible to shave in the morning and there are no washup facilities, so if you find yourself here, take a washing up bowl or large saucepan as we used.
SURROUNDING AREA:
Billericay is a short drive (5 mins) away with a few well known supermarkets so making shopping for supplies quite easy. There are a few nice takeaways including kebabs, Chinese & the like. Pubs seems nice, not that I spent any time in them, just glancing through mainly.
TRAVEL:
Barleylands is situated very near to major rail routes, Basildon has straight through connections to Fenchurch street station in London, so park the car & get a cheap return ticket if you want to see our nations capital city. Also easy access to Southend on sea from the same station, making for a great day out if you have young monsters that need to be tired out.
CONCLUSION:
This campsite has some serious potential to be a nice earner & a superb resort for us campers, however the toilets are the worst I have ever encountered! This makes it a no return site for my family, shame as it is well situated.

Our family of 3 + dog stayed at Barleylands over Easter. We were warned when booking that there wasn't much there, but as we were using it as a base to visit family were not put off - and for £8 a night with hook up, what could go wrong?
The camping field is large and roomy, although if you do want hook up, there is a row of about 8 hook up points, so you do have to be in a row with other caravans, instead of being able to choose a place. These hook up spots are also on hard ground - so you'll need some sturdy pegs for any awning as we found out.
There is a toilet block, which is about a 10 minute walk from the camping field, there are 2 showers. This block is shared with the main visitor attraction of Barleylands Farm, so the showers are busy at 'peak' times, and you may not want to be using them when the farm is open to visitors!
There are chemical disposal points, when we arrived there wasn't a rubbish bin, although one did appear over the weekend.
Plenty of space for kids to ride bikes, play football etc.
There is lots going on at Barleylands most weekends, there is a farmers market on alternate saturdays, boot sales on sunday and there are the farm attractions and craft centre which is worth a look around.
The site is in a good location, only 5 minutes to a local supermarket, although there isn't a shop on site. Not far away from the towns of Basildon, Southend, or for the shoppers, there is of course Lakeside.
Barleylands suited our needs for this visit, but we might not be rushing back there. However, for the aforementioned bargain price, who knows? If this site was improved with better shower and toilet facilities, it would be fab!

Hi went to this campsite on the spear of the moment to test out our new tent. We rang up at 4 o clock and they said as long as we got there by 5 it was fine, thought this was very good as it was the school holidays.
The site was clean and tidy, toilets were also very clean but they were a bit of a walk away, which for us was not great with two small children and I wouldn't want to do it in bad weather
The pitch was quite large and flat had no problems putting up our very large tent.
The site has no shop on it but there is a one stop about 5 mins drive away.
There are places to eat within the arts and craft centre altough we found these a bit pricey.
Within the craft centre there was a model railway that you could go on for a pound each(this was closed so couldn't go on it)There was also a farm section that you had to pay to get in but could come and go as much as you wanted(5 pounds each/under 2's were free)
Inside this section there was plenty to do ;
A indoor sandpit
Animals to feed
Tramperlines
Pedal tractors/ride on tractors
2 playareas
And a gaint bouncy pillow, we spent most off the day in here and our two boys loved it(aged 3 and 17 months)
Overall would recommend this site as there was plenty to do and at 7pound a night or 8 for electric hook up was very good value for money. Will be going again as is only 30 mins away form us

A flat field site with standpipe and minimal shelter at the edges. The toilet and shower block are part of the main Barleylands Complex. The toilets were modern and clean but there was hot water only feed. The free showers were hot and clean.
The Barleylands Complex is fantastic with an extensive farm with a petting corner and up to calves and pigs; a very good playground and miniature railway. There are numerous craft units, a good restaurant/ cafe (The Hive) and a plush restaurant (the Magic Mushroom) attached to the site.
There is plenty to see and do on-site. Rather less in the close vicinity without transport
