Spent a weekend at that great little campsite. There are two large camping fields which are flat and well kept.

Showers and toilets are adequate. Site owners really friendly and welcoming. It costs £7 per person, per night.

It is perfectly located for exploring Hadrian's Wall: the site is a very short walk for some of the best remains, situated on the B6318.

The Twice Brewed pub is a couple of minutes walk away and serves decent food and drink. Haltwhistle is a bigger town and is a couple of miles away.

As other reviews have said, this is a very basic site. There are two large fields and a smaller area outside the farmhouse; all have slopes but some flat areas. We paid £6 per person per night and 50p for our tent per night. It's right beneath Hadrian's Wall, a working sheep farm.

We pitched in the middle field, on the top of the slope near the fence. There were two portaloos a little way away, but we preferred to go to the farm buildings. There were lots of people camping when we got there. We were going to pitch up underneath the trees by the wall in the middle field, but two guys came along and told us they'd move their tents that morning after being there for one night, as it got very boggy when it rained. So we moved.

The road nearby is quite quiet, didn't bother us at all. The facilities at the farm buildings are basic. The ladies' had two toilets, hand dryer, 3 sinks and a shower, which was really lovely and hot and free! My male partner said the one toilet cubicle in the men's was tricky, as there was usually a queue even though there's a urinal. But his shower was also good. There are two sinks outside with hot and cold water for washing up, although there wasn't a plug that fit, so I couldn't fill up the sink, just kept pushing the tap (it doesn't run continuously) to rinse and scrubbed without warning.

I ate breakfast one morning in the coffee shop; bacon and egg sarnie which was realy good, if a bit dear at £3. I didn't go in the camping barn or use the shop, but I did hear that. They loan out sleeping bags if yours gets wet. Everyone who worked on the farm that we saw seemed friendly.

The one massive bonus about this campsite is that it's about 2 minutes' walk from a pub called The Twice Brewed Inn. Serves really good food at reasonable prices and the real ale is just brilliant. I had 'Matfen Magic' every night, which was delicious. The bar also boasts about 63 varieties of rum, which we didn't try! The staff are all friendly and it really lifted our spirits after walking and camping in the wind at rain.

This campsite is good for a basic site and its location to the Wall and various walks is good. Just be careful where you pitch your tent!

The site is right on the road known locally as the military road (B6318) so is very easy to find.

There are two pitching fields however at time of our visit one of them was closed for lambing as it’s a working sheep farm, so we pitched in the open one in front of farmhouse and were the only ones there camping, however later on some hikers pitched up. Ground is clay so easy to peg out most of it has a slope to it.Though.

Fee was 6 quid per adult and 50p per car, children under 10 years old go free. There appears to be no EHU hook ups at this site.

Owners friendly enough but very busy with lambing at time of our stay, however showed us around the farm buildings to the lambs that were being bottle fed while going about their business, so that was nice of them.

Facilities were in farm courtyard

Gents Toilet block - 1 toilet, 1 urinal, 3 sinks, 1 shower.

Ladies Toilet block - 2 toilets, 1 shower, probable 3 sinks

There is another shower room standing on its own however the door is made of planking that has gaps between, so door needs replacing in my opinion or facing over.

Facilities were clean but nothing fancy,( toilet blocks and dishwashing area were being painted by a friendly painter when I stayed there ready for the start of season). Water from hot taps was nice and hot, however the showers were probably 7kw electric and in my opinion need replacing or the water supply adjusting as trying to get a consistent temperature, that didn’t fluctuate hot and cold, was just about impossible for me due to the fluctuation of supply flow and I was the only one using it at the time.

There is a dishwashing area between the gents and ladies too with about 3 sinks in under a roof canopy.

There is also a bunkbarn for backpackers and walkers, consisting of an open room full of beds, suited to groups I would imagine.

There is a tea room there too which does breakfast and teas for passing tourist trade, however at the time of our visit it hadnt opened up yet for the season.

Summary

A basic no frills site for camping, with a pub in reach and catering in reach, handily situated right on Hadrians wall. I would use it again.

This is perfectly situated for the Wall, a 15 min walk up the hill gets you right there! In addition, Winshields was 5 mins walk from the lovely Twice Brewed pub and close to Haltwhistle if you need to stock up. The independent off-licence sold Allenheads beers which was great.

On the other hand. The crows make an unbelievable amount of night from first thing in the morning. Also there were some pretty noisy groups.

Nice site and ideal base for exploring Hadrians wall between Steel Rigg and Housteads fort. Nice pub called Twice Brewed 5 mins walk down the road. Site facilities were OK and cost £10.50 a night for 2 adults in a campervan.

Would recommend this site for visiting the wall. Can be windy though but if you pitch in 2nd field by the trees you don't notice it.

This was our first camping trip, so can't compare this site to any others.

Area:

The site itself is on Hadrian's Wall route. It's within walking distance of both Vindolanda (a 40 minute walk for unfit me and my 8 year old son) and Housesteads. The scenery is stunning! Wild and heart-rendingly beautiful. It is windy, but that's the price you pay for the view, I feel.

The campsite is on a working farm, right beside a road. Across the road are sheep and we could also hear cows somewhere close by.

About 5-10mins walk down the road is a pub which serves food. The staff were very welcoming when we were there. It was warm, comfortable and full of campers & walkers. The food was fine, but not better than most other pubs. It was reasonably priced. There is a good selection of ales/beers and whiskey.

It is child-friendly without being of the pub-chain variety.

Campsite:

We arrived about 6pm: found the entrance tricky to locate and ended up going in the farm entrance. When we got there, I popped into the cafe area to book in: we were told to go and find a space and just pitch up.

I did not find the owners particularly friendly and there was no help or information given about facilities etc. Perhaps if we'd arrived earlier we'd have received a warmer welcome.

We camped in the first field, nearest the toilet/shower block area. The field had quite a slope, although we found a flat bit near the wall. There is another field with a couple of portaloos in which seemed a bit flatter.

There are no facilities for children, but there were plenty of kids about having fun with a frisbee, quoits set and a ball.

Facilities:

This is a basic campsite for tents. There was one Scooby-Doo type motorhome, but otherwise just tents.

I did not see any electric hook-ups and assume thre aren't any.

Toilet and shower block was fine - although they cleaned it in the morning by hosing it down, which meant the floors were a puddle all day. The shower is pretty good though, and free. There is also a sink area for washing up: the taps are the type you hold down and the water is tepid at best.

The website said there were picnic benches present: I couldn't see any.

There is a cafe, serving breakfast from 8am-10am. Breakfasts are fine and good value and the lady cooking/serving was friendly and welcoming. According to the website, there is also a shop: unfortunately because we went out straight after breakfast and didn't get back to the site til about 5.30 each day we weren't there when the shop was open so I can't comment on it.

Prices:

Cheap - we paid £5 per night for the tent and 50p for the car. Children under 10 go free and it's £5 per night for each adult, so good value!

Would I go again:

Yes: it's cheap and convenient for walking parts of the wall and visiting the local attractions.

We have just come back from 1 night's stay at this site. The shower block and toilets were very clean. The site is situated in beautiful countryside with nothing around it so very peaceful. There is a lovely pub 1/2 mile down the road called Twice Brewed we went for tea and the prices were reasonable and the food was fantastic. The site does now have a tea room which unfortunately we didn't get to use but looked beautiful and was busy when we went in to pay for our reservations. The nearest supermarket was in Haltwhistle about 2 mile from campsite. Overall a fab site which we are definitely going to use again.

My second review of this site after not using it for a while!

Still absolutely fantastic! Found a hidden little spot that cant even be seen from the road bottom of the dip with only the sheep for company. Fantastic views and only £5 per person 50p for car is well worth the money!

The site has never really been busy in any of our visits which is surprising as its kind of a hidden gem! Unlike some sites in the same area who have almost doubled their tariff since last year. Now they have a fab tea room and breakfasts on the go too!

Walks to the wall start off at the farm itself great fun!

Only thing I could recommend is someone enforcing a no noise after 10.30 or 11pm. We aren't miserable people and like to have a drink and a laugh with the best of them but a group of girls had 2 nights of drinking and singing with the car stereo going until well past 2.30am and not quietly either! only time we got some sleep was the night it rained! Only fault as far as this is concerned! But it is very rare!

Fantastic value for money kids under 10 stayed free! which is handy when 3 of our 4 are. Owner very friendly, clean, quite and very tidy site only 1 thing down side was no play park for the kids.
We will defo be using the campsite again. We pitched in the big field away from the road which can be busy. They owner had a little on site breakfast / packed lunch room mmmmmmm that's the only way to describe my bacon sandwich. Will defo be going back there

Can only echo Chrisandlou2's review. We were in the second field and it's a couple of minutes walk to the toilet block and washing up facilities. There are about three portaloos scattered around the field but when we were there they did get pretty filthy.

There is some noise from cars speeding down the road but it's not too busy at night - which is good news coming back from the pub, as people drive dead fast along this very straight switchback road and there's only a bit of grass verge to walk on. The pub is great for real ale; five on at a go and regularly switched, but the food was disappointing. I never, ever, want to eat Turkish Delight ice cream ever again.

Haltwhistle is about 3 miles away, and has a Sainsbury's and Coop for your supermarket needs. On the way there, there's a farm shop at the top of the hill which is well worth a look for locally sourced meet.

Excellent location for walking Hadrian's Wall. We did three different walks over three days all starting from the campsite.

Still £5 per person per night, plus 50p per car per night.
