My girlfriend and I along with our small dog stayed at this campsite for the weekend of the Great North Swim in Windermere and therefore expected it to be busy which it was. That said, you select your own pitch and there is plenty of room to set up your camp with your vehicle adjacent to your tent. The ground is quite undulating in places but getting a level pitch was not a problem. The scenery is beautiful and made a perfect backdrop for our evening barbeque.
The facilities are very basic to say the least but perfectly adequate for an overnight stay with clean toilets, (outdoor) washing up sink but no showers. However we knew this prior to our arrival thanks to this site and it was no issue due to showers being available at Windermere following the swim. However, this would restrict us from staying longer on this site in the future.
All in all though I really enjoyed our stay at this site at Loughrigg and would have no hesitation in returning.

I stumbled upon this site back in 1974 aged 17 with my mate cossa and what a gem it still is.I have been back a few times with my son but more recently with a couple of young nephews the views are stunning and unspoilt and the murphys who have run the farm all these years are realy helpful.

I visited this site last year as a one night stepping stone, to a backpacking & wild camp the next day, starting in Great Langdale.
The location of the site is good, but I have never been on a more basic site, as far as amenities go.
It did it's job though, a safe place for a night's sleep so no complaints from me.
The owners were helpful and friendly

Totally agree with previous reviews, basic site - toilets and tap, friendly owners and fantastic scenery.
We arrived on a Saturday and the site was quite busy but plenty of space between pitches. Hubby had to go home on the Sunday (work) and I stayed with my dog until Thursday, felt perfectly safe camping alone and loved the peace and quiet. The site has a small lake (Tarn) and fishing permits can be purchased for £3 per day.
Ambleside is a lovely town, shop staff are very helpful and prices are reasonable (fresh free range eggs £1.10 for 6), plenty of outdoors type shops and loads of restaurants/cafes.
It is only 4 miles from Windermere, Grizedale forest is worth a visit (has a Going Ape attraction which looked great but I had the dog).
In short a lovely clean site, close to many attractions in the Lake District and for £3 pppn a total bargain.

Quick thanks to other peoples reviews and the tip with the post box. Just spent 4 nights here over the bank holiday weekend and what a great place the site is good old back to basic camping with a field, a toilet and a tap what more do you need!
The morning walks to ambleside only 2 miles away where a good way to start the day and the views where breathtaking.
The local pub is very welcoming although the walk back up the hill in the rain after a few bevvys is challenging.
The site got quite busy while we where there but people had enough sense to leave space for you to get cars out.
Every thing about the place was ideal for some great camping and walking
All in all a great friendly basic site and charged at basic rate of £6pppn you just cant find fault with the place.

I found this site purely by accident about 6yrs ago. Similar to others I'd tried and failed on a busy bank holiday weekend to find a place elsewhere and was given this name by another friendly site owner. Yep its basic but its charged accordingly. The scenery is amazing, its peaceful, the owners are lovely. Once I took my tent but forgot the poles! The Farmers wife wouldn't let us leave as it was quite a trek back to Wigan and so let us stay in the little barn conversion above their house, at no extra cost! Only just found this site that has the site listed so thought I'd let people know how lovely it is. Just don't all rush there at once!

Having recently visited Tarn Foot twice in the last month, I can honestly say what a fantastic place it is, but only for proper campers.
Facilities are the literal basics of a toilet and a sink, for me I think this deters most of the people you don’t want on the site (Loud, larger louts).
On my second time at the site it was slightly busier than usual; still with enough room to access a private pitch with a great view. The wind which channels down the valley, from the direction of the tarn, can be fast and cold, but if you pitch right, you should be ok.
Great places to visit whilst you are there for walkers and bikers alike, being into Mountain Biking I look for good fast trails, and if you don’t mind riding to get to places, I recommend a trip around Rydal Water across to Grasmere (A big circular route) or if you really fancy a good ride you can take the bike rack and car up to Helvellyn (there are probably camp sites nearer to here) that’s only for the better bikers.
Back to the camp site, fires are not allowed, but BBQs are allowed, and if you really need to wash, you can always go for a swim in the tarn, but watch out for the fisherman; they wont take too kindly to you disturbing the water near to them, so you best find a secluded place (watch out for the pike etc)
For the adventurous people, you can go night riding around Skelwith Falls, and follow the trail up to the Britannia pub, the road back from there to get to the camp site is pretty steep, but it does bring you back near to the footpath which runs parallel to the camping field, you will need a bright light as it gets extremely dark at night due to the light pollution being very minimal.
All in all a great site for campers who know what it means to get back to basics, the downsides for me were, the best place for views is over a wired fence, in a field which is home to the sheep, and the parking for cars is along side your tent which can ruin the essence of ‘Back to nature’ 8/10

Would echo the majority of reviews - very basic site, but amazing views, so you really can't go wrong at £3 pppn. Took us an hour to find it - it was only by running into the owner coincidentally at another farm, we made it. It's so poorly signed, but chatting to the owner, he likes it that way I think, doesn't want to get too busy. After taking the A593 towards Coniston, take High Close towards the youth hostel. Just a short way up the hill, opposite a red post box in the wall, turn right, and you're there. That last bit is so crucial! Your sat nav won't be much help, apparently big lorries occasionally go thundering through the small lanes, as lost as we were, until we had that last piece of info. It's just a short drive to Ambleside, you could walk, but there's little if no pavements. You only need to go over the brow of the hill from your pitch to see views to die for though.

We ended up here by accident having driven up from London on a Bank Holiday weekend only to discover that EVERYWHERE was full up. A novices mistake perhaps but it all turned out fine because I think this place is a gem.
When I called the lady was very clear that it was basic - essentially an enclosed field with two loos & an outside cold tap & sink. You had to love her for the honesty alone (she actually gave me the number for a nearby campsite first, just in case we could get in there).
And it is basic but its lovely - the air is clear, the views are spectacular, you open your tent in the morning to massive hills, there's a tarn behind you, Amble is 10 mins in the car, you can walk up the valley to Elterwater and have a brilliant dinner in the Britannia Inn (go early on the weekends as it fills up fast).
For me it was all about the location, not the facilitites. The only reason I haven't been back is that its just too far to get to on a Friday night from London. But if I was closer, I would be there like a shot.
Facilities - the afore mentioned two loos & a cold tap/sink. Loos clean and a surprising amount of loo roll for a bank holiday weekend.
Walking distance - Elterwater with a great pub and one small shop (basics only). There's also a closer pub nearby called The New Dungeon Ghyll.
Amble - about 10 mins in the car. Lots of shops, places to eat (good chippies!), pubs, camping stuff, cinema for when it rains.
