We visted this campsite Easter week it was lovely but the weather was not very good the owners are very helpful. The ground was very wet and Adam (one of the owners) helped us as we were leaving to get the caravan off the pitch.
I have two children they didn't want to come home as they enjoyed themselves so much in Newcastle. The campsite is about a 15 min drive to the metro centre which is very enjoyable there is also a very good working museum called Beamish which is approx 40 mins away from the campsite.
There was a giant chess board which the kids entertained themselves with. The campsite is very well maintained and quiet, however if I had younger children I would be slightly worried as there is a stream running through the campsite which has no fence around it and has a steep drop
There is a co-op in a village if you need some urgent supplies over the Prudhoe brige which is a short drive away or a very nice 20 walk

Can't think of another site we've been on where it was so quiet? Peace and tranquillity met us on the doorstep and didn't let go. Except for a bunch of rowdies, who only stayed for 2nights then disappeared to annoy someone else.
We originally booked in for 3 nights as we didn't know what it would be like? We stayed for 6 nights in the end. The toilet block is functional, as long as there aren't more than 6 tents, then it can be a little crowded. The shower is huge however, plenty of room to change etc, but the drainage is terrible. Took about 5 mins for the water to run off. The toilets were clean, although after a rainfall it soon became a mud bath in there, a little cleaning in the corners would not go amiss.
The lady on the phone when we booked was very helpful, instructing us where to go, as the site isn't signposted and can easily be missed. The site is very basic, but functional. As a base for exploring some of Northumberland, we can't recommend it enough.
The fishing could be better, no pegs/bait etc, but we are of the understanding that is being sorted for next year.

We enjoyed our weekend stay here, despite changeable weather.
The camping field is small, but well proportioned - there is a very gentle slope and one or two trees with a fence surrounding the area. There are no specific pitches (unless you ask for electric hook up I assume), and so nobody is on top of each other and it worked out quite roomy for us. There is a veranda which many people used for cooking and eating when it rained. The washing up point is here (one sink and drainer). There are lots of birds around the field, but our highlight were the bats that came out every evening.
The toilet block for women has one sink, two toilets and one very roomy and hot shower. I never had to queue and it wasn't an issue. For men there is a urinal, toilet, hot shower and a sink. The only change we would make here would be to include an extra sink and shower stall, however we never had to queue so I guess it is the right size for the camping field.
We don't have children, but the kids on the site seemed quite happy! I'm not sure if there was a play area, but for older kids there is a giant draughts and chess set next to the toilet block.
The two nearby villages have pubs and small shops, Prudhoe is larger and has a really good Co-op and hardware store. Most things seem to be closed on Sundays and it might be an idea to check opening times for local facilities and print off a timetable for local transport.
Prudhoe castle is well worth a visit, and you are reasonably close to Hadrians Wall attractions as well as Newcastle itself.
We would definitely go back, it is good value for money and the people who run the site are friendly and helpful.

We usually steer clear of commercial sites,as they can be unknown quantities! No worries here, though! The site is very easy to find and is an ideal touring base for Hadrian's Wall country, as it's less than 5 minutes drive from the A69.
The site is split into 2 areas: a lower area with two large fields for tents and space for 5 hardstandings with electric for touring caravans, and another area for caravans slightly further up. The tent fields are huge, great for ball games etc. There is also a pavilion with verandah and chairs.
The toilet block was always beautifully clean. The only word of warning is that there are only 2 toilets and 1 shower in each section, so I can imagine it might get a bit busy! We had no problems, though.
All the caravan pitches were level but a word of warning - if you have a large caravan, ask to go 'at the top' as the space in front of each pitch in the lower area is not huge. We were fine with a Swift 535 but anything larger and no-one would get past you!
There's no playground but plenty of space for children to play.
The site is on a working farm / livery yard and the family live on site. They were lovely, very helpful and couldn't do enough for us.
The site is over the road fron the river Tyne - lovely walk in the evening. There is a pub in Ovingham serving good food within a 20 minute walk with footpaths all along the road. There are two other pubs and an award-winning CAMRA pub with its own micro-brewery a 5 minute drive away in Wylam. Wylam also has a slightly more up-market restaurant called Bistro en Glaze (ouch!) and nearby Ovington has Winships restaurant. The nearest town is Prudhoe, straight across the river. Be warned: there is a bridge across the river at Ovingham but it's very narrow! My husband split the skirt on our (very wide) Kia Sedona going across. It's fine for a normal width car, though. The slightly longer way round is through Wylam (much wider bridge!).There is also a separate pedestrian bridge. Prudhoe has plenty of facilities including a large Co-op food store. The nearest smaller shop, post office etc. Are in Ovingham.
They get up early up North - the main Sunday C of E service in Ovingham starts at 9:30.The church is partly built of Roman stones nicked from the Wall and has a great collection of Mediaeval grave covers.
Attractions - where do I start? Prudhoe Castle, George Stephanson's cottage in Wylam, Hadrian's Wall etc etc. Park for free at Prudhoe station and it's only 20 minutes train ride into Newcastle.
We will be going back to Hadrian's Wall country and will definitely be staying at High Hermitage again.

I stayed here for one night with my 5 year old son. The owners were very friendly when we booked and also on arrival. The site is small & attractive, in a great location, next to the Tyne, midway between Wylam & Ovingham. Toilet block was basic but clean.
However, our stay was not at all enjoyable, due to the behaviour of other campers, which went unchecked, despite a notice saying that cctv was in operation.
Constant foul language, middle aged people smoking suspicious looking cigarettes, in front of their children. 2 groups of incredibly noisy teenagers / early 20 somethings kept us awake until 3:30am, drinking, vomiting and swearing. Other campers asked them to be quiet but the campsite owners were nowhere to be seen.
This was a shame because it's so close to being a very pleasant campsite but it's just not big enough to cope with such diverse groups of people. Needless to say, we will not be returning in a hurry.
