Spent ages looking for a stopover site for the tunnel and rang the pub and they were happy to accommodate.
Arrived late (just before 10pm), and they couldn't have been more welcoming. They even re-opened the kitchen for us and supplied an excellent meal with good portions. The Guinness was good too!
Pitch was free as we ate in the pub, and I just wish we had arrived earlier as we'd of had a better choice of what looked to be an excellent menu
No problems leaving early either.
Pub toilets spotless (as was the pub), and there are also some basic toilets outside on the site for out of hours (old portacabin style)
Pitches were level ,and the site was lovely and quiet.
Definitely recommend as a pub and as a campsite, and one to highly recommend as a tunnel or ferry stopover

Stayed here for two nights in a six man tent although there was only four of us. The staff were very friendly and the pub itself is a great place to eat or drink with a balcony that faces the sunset making it ideal on hot summer nights. Its a little off the beaten track, but that for me, is a good thing. The road leading to it was a little busy through the second morning and runs directly beside the camp site. The toilets and showers are in need of a little maintenance but are adequate. There is cold running water readily available and electric hook up if required. There is also a children's play area with swings and slides for the little ones.
The meal we had in the pub was of a very good standard and reasonably priced. (If you eat in the pub in the evening, you pay nothing for your pitch!) The actual cost of our pitch, with no electric hook up was £10 per night.(bargain).
My only gripe would be the chickens. They'll eat anything you happen to leave lying around including any rubbish bags or clothing.
There aren't any shops we found near the campsite but cheriton is only a short drive away and hythe is about the same. There is a fantastic playground for kids of all ages at the lower leas in Folkstone and a sandy beach at the far end of Folkstone. It appears that a fish and chip supper is available at the pub on a Wednesday night but as this was the day we left we didn't get a chance to try it. We had a great time and wished we could've stayed longer. Many thanks

We stayed here overnight prior to a channel tunnel crossing.
Arrival at the site was by quite narrow country lanes which felt like quite a tight squeeze in my micra, I wouldn't have liked to negotiate with a camper or caravan, but some obviously did as there were about 4 large campers already there.
The pub was closed when we arrived, one of the other campers advised us to pitch where we wanted as the the owner was very laid back and wouldn't mind! We never met the owner, we went into the pub to pay later that evening. We paid £10.
The field is fairly flat. The location is well out of the way, very quiet and views are absolutely stunning.
There is a small play area for children. Hens roam the site freely which my little boy found hilarious, especially when they came looking for crumbs whilst he was having his lunch.
There is a tap in one corner of the field. We didn't have EHU, but this is provided by a series of wires trailed across the field.
The toilet/shower/washbowl was a sort of portacabin and had only one toilet, one shower and two sinks, one of which squirted water into the air when you switched the tap on Subsequently, my sons PJ's got soaked when he went to brush his teeth, a hassle we could've done without!. Access to the loo was through the sink/shower area, so if someone is using the shower you have to wait for the loo, even if its vacant. I have to be honest, I didn't use the shower, I didn't like the look of it!
All this said, I would use this site again, it's in a beautiful location and it's very convenient for the channel tunnel.

We enjoyed our first nights camping in the UK at the Black Horse - chosen because of the reviews below.
The staff where helpful, friendly and the site was good for children. Secured by a fence and access to a play area. Play area was unsupervised and I would not recommend it for children under 3.
We ate at the Pub which gave us free pitching, a good deal. The food was high quality (not your traditional pub food so don't expect pie n chips) and a safe kids menu was available.
Camp fires permitted which was a first for the kids and we managed to cook some marshmallows.
Facilities in the area are non exsistent - however there is a very good service facility back at the M20 junction - about 3 miles.
Hiking is a must - only a short walk from the north downs way which is great for all - including the dogs!
Only bad points - toilets not 24hrs and showers are poorly maintained (grubby at best!)
I had a relaxing and enjoyable break and would recommend to those who don't mind roughing it and want to simply relax!

As previous review really.
Toilet facilities are limited, 1 toilet and 1 working shower however as it was midweek we were the only tent there.
Camping was half-price for eating in the pub and not free as stated in the ad.
Watch out for the hens - they greet you on arrival in the campsite like long lost friends and come running when ever you appear!
A lovely spot of countryside and remote from main roads; great for walks.

This site really is as basic as the previous reviews have stated - a screened-off field with a tap, loo & shower next to the pub - and it's really good! It's very peaceful, quiet & easy-going. The pub (food, drink & ambience) is of a good quality and price. We stayed for 3 nights & could have happily stayed longer. Although we were self-contained in our caravan, my husband used the loo/shower and found them basic but clean. One word of warning - there is only one loo and one shower - both housed in the same unit. That may be problematic at busier times.

We stayed here for 2 nights with our 4 children and 2 dogs. We were very pleased. It is very basic, and very quiet, which is actually what I was looking for.
There was plenty of space between our tent and the next, or though we unintentionally pitched closer than we needed to as our tent is new and we underestimated its size.
The toilet and shower is basic, and small, but the water was hot, or though took a few minutes to heat when switched on. There was no toilet roll, but we luckily had our own.
The site is very rural, nothing but miles of country side. Or though not far to drive for a coop and a large Tesco.
We found it quiet at night, and only heard the occasional car, or though we were woken early by a chorus of sheep, which we found quite amusing to listen to or though very early. They also have free roaming chickens, which was an issue for one of my dogs who didn’t like the coming too close. But the other dog was fine. And the kids loved them.
There is a play area, or though a bit worn the kids enjoyed it. The restaurant we felt was quite expensive, but the food was good, and if you plan to dine anyway you get your free pitch, which was only £10 so you wouldn’t dine just for a free pitch.
I would love to go again, simply for the tranquillity, but there is not much else to do other than relax, except maybe sit in the pub, or go for a walk on the downs.
If you want quiet, this is the place.

My boyfriend and I camped at the Black Horse for 3 nights this last May bank holiday. We picked it because it was one of the only places in the South East that allowed camp fires (my basic requirement) and still had availability 2 weeks before the bank holiday. We thought we were just going with the dregs, but we actually had a wonderful stay!
The pub has a small field behind it for campers and caravans. You can set up wherever you like. There is a very basic but perfectly suitable loo/shower unit, and you can also use the pub toilets during opening hours. The location is incredibly picturesque and quiet, just what we wanted. The pub landlord was very friendly when we arrived and for the duration of our stay, making us feel very welcome.
The pub itself is very nice, nicely done up but still retaining that old pub feel. It also has a great restaurant, and offers you free camping on any night you eat there.
It's quick and easy to drive to the coast from there, which we did one day, spending the afternoon in Dover. We also went on a long walk straight from the campsite, across the neighbouring field and onto a couple of pubs, at one point finding ourselves way up high and having a wonderful view across the Kentish fields towards the sea.
On Sunday nights they have a jazz band playing from 8, something we enjoyed tremendously - what a show!
We both agreed this is the nicest camping experience we've had to date and will definitely come back.
If you are after somewhere quiet and beautiful, down a lovely country lane, whilst still having access to a great pub should it take your fancy, we strongly recommend The Black Horse.

One correction on the other reviews: there is a water tap next to the loo/shower facilities, so you don't need to go inside for that.

We stayed here for three nights in Sept (two vans, 4 adults). Hook-up, water etc. as previously reviewed. Quiet location (back of car park, actually), but we pitched in the normal manner and got on with it. The owners and bar staff were so friendly and the food / drink was excellent, which is what we wanted. We went out in the day and ate at the pub in the evenings. Free to stay if you eat there, which is a wonderful deal. Only one hook-up but we charged our spare battery from it and coped. Will go again.

An excellent place to stop over before getting the shuttle. The pub is in a lovely quiet location despite being very close to the motorway.
The site is basically the pub car park, and there's no access to water or toilets except when the pub is open.
Power hookup was by means of a standard extension lead from the pub, there were no proper hookup points, so if you intend to use your standard cable you'll need to take an adapter with you.
No complaints really, especially as the owners will let you stay for free provided you eat in the restaurant. Food was very good.
Fine if you have a motorhome with your own water tanks and toilet/shower.
Would use again.
