We stayed at this campsite both at the beginning and end of our holiday and can honestly say it was the best site of the trip, and the cheapest.
It is in a delightful, peaceful, rural setting with large, marked out pitches. When we arrived the office was closed but there was a notice indicating we should choose our own pitch. We returned later to register and met the owners/guardians (not sure which)who don't speak much English but were very helpful and we got my with my embarrasingly limited French. We ordered croissants for the morning which were available to collect from the office from 8.00am. We also discovered that you can buy farm cider from the office at Eu2.50 a bottle (with the bottle to be returned).
The toilet and shower facilities were absolutely fine. There are separate women's and men's blocks with a washing up area inbetween. They were well kept and, despite there only being 3 showers there were no morning queues. There was a small playground, tennis court and football pitch but we didn't see these being used much.
We started the walk downhill through the woods to the village but thought better of it after considering the return journey and took the car instead! Le Bec Hellouin is designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France and you can see why. It is very pretty with lots of typical Normandy half timbered houses painted in various colours. The art gallery had just hung a new exhibition and we enjoyed spending some time in there. We walked around the grounds of the abbey where there is a Benedictine monastery, it was a lovely summer day and felt very peaceful and serene.
We saw four restaurants in the village. The one we ate in wasn't the best but at 17Eu for 3 courses we weren't expecting gourmet food. It had a very pleasant outdoor 'beer garden' which was just what we needed after pitching our tent in unexpectedly high temperatures!
None of the sites we stayed on were bad but whereas some were noisy and/or had tightly crammed pitches, this one ticked all the boxes for us. For two adults with a car and tent with electric hook-up the cost was Eu12.96 per night, a real bargain. We will definitely return.

This site is stated in the CC guide as being a 'Gem'. We have no reason to disagree with this. It is a well kept municipal site with a dedicated local couple as guardians. They have about 20 words of English between them so, guess what? French is the language of choice but they are very patient.
The large facilities block is kept immaculately clean, but do remember your own toilet paper (carried on high - a bit like a trophy!) The CPD is one of the best I've ever seen or used. There is plenty of hot water+washing-up/veg prep. Sinks etc. There is a large automatic washing machine and dryer available. The pitches are large and have EHUs at 10A.
Some of the water points are slow, but OK. Grey water disposal is behind the toilet block. Bread can be ordered each evening and arrives at 08.00
Being only minutes from the A28 makes this site very useful for transit.
If you have time, do visit the Abbey - not a ruin, but a working real time one! The building and the atmosphere are humbling. The view from the tower is superb and the walk from the site is manageable with care (unsuitable for less-able or wheeled vehcles of any sort.)
Well worth a visit or a stay.

Camping St Nicolas is situated in the French countryside south of Rouen. It is near to the A28 autoroute and makes a popular and ideal night halt for those travelling north or south by that route. The approach is, however, by narrow country roads and care is necessary.
Camping Saint-Nicolas is a quite a small site set in a woodland setting. The 90 pitches are marked on flat open grass with some trees for shade. The pitches are large and a number are large enough to permit night-halters to remain hitched up. There are numerous water points and 10amp electricity points.
The lady warden and showed us to our pitch and advised us on locating the ‘van for sunshine, etc. She and her husband are friendly and helpful although neither speak any English. There is a large toilet block with a washing up area with a feature bay window which overlooks the children’s playground. There is, also, a sports field and tennis courts. There is a motor home waste point near the toilets. There is a laundry near to the warden’s house and a small reading room/library in a garden shed! There is a selection of tourist information leaflets at reception.
Bread can be pre-ordered from reception and local tradesman calls most evenings selling a variety of take-away food. There is a steep pathway leading from opposite the site through a wood down to the village. It should be noted that this path is VERY stony in places and is not really suitable for baby buggies, etc. Neither is the path lit and would not be suitable for walking in the dark. The village is apparently 2-3 miles by road.
The small village is in the valley below the campsite. It is very picturesque with a lot of half-timbered houses set around a shady green. The interesting village Church made a very cool retreat on a hot day. There is a small general store with a limited range of foodstuffs and a café area. There are 2 restaurants and a pub in the village. We enjoyed pleasant drinks sitting in front of the pub in the shade of the mature trees. There is, also, an art gallery. The large Abbey is open to the public. Admission to the grounds is free but there is a charge for the guided tour.
This site makes an excellent night halt when travelling on the A28 It is featured in Alan Rogers France guide. We spent 2 nights there at the end of July whilst travelling south and were charged a very reasonable £9.57 per night (2 adults, car and caravan with EHU).
