A field with a cold water tap on the corner of the old barn and use of toilets behind the pub. This is really all you need for a short stay to go hiking around the beautiful surrounding countryside. £2. 50 per night. Bargain.
This is a campsite used by like minded people who wish to enjoy the countryside around therefore the basic facilities are not a problem.
This is not a site occupied by hoards of screaming children and drunken youths. Wonderful.
The inn is welcoming serving good ale and lovely meals. A great place for the serious hiker or those that wish a basic and simple break in stunning Wasdale.

The Inn and camp site are extremely walker friendly and a welcome site after a hard slog around the area. The new toilets and showers are great could be a bit slippy when the numbers rise but if they had a mirror it would have been top marks! The only draw back for the site is the generator that occupies the opposite side of the road away from the inn but next to the camping field. It did continue all night in what should have been a really peaceful place? Bring ear plugs. I am sure this could be resolved. The price to stay is amazing and the food was excellent. We will come back. We were also really impressed with the shop for stocking up on everything you could possibly need

Please note that this site, previously known as the Barn Door, is now being run by the Wasdale Head Inn.
New for 2012, they now have new toilets exclusively for campers, a new sink/washup area and, for £1 each, hot showers.

Stayed here for 2 nights, site right opposite the Wasdale Head Inn. Great view from the site of surrounding fells, though quite exposed if a south west wind is blowing up the valley from the lake. It is only a small field, and the charge is £2.50 per person per night, which may seem ridiculously cheap these days, until you consider there are near zero facilities.
If you come by car you have to park in the pub car park across the road, where there is also the Barn Door Shop itself, selling a wide selection of camping and hiking equipment and clothing. It also sells a fair choice of basic food provisions and trail snacks, though quite pricey, and closes at 5.30pm.
There is a large bin for rubbish at the entrance to the site. There is also a single stand tap next to the shop in the pub car park, which is also has to be used for washing up, cleaning teeth and showering! There are basic ladies and gents public toilets behind the Inn, but these are very poorly maintained, and looked as if they had not been cleaned for several years.
This site would only be an option if you don't mind roughing it for a couple of nights, any longer and it would be better to spend some more money and stay at the National Trust site down the road. You can also be disturbed by various 3 peaks charity walks doing Scafell Pike at all hours of day and night, as the start / finish point of this is usually the nearby wasdale green car park.
