Just stayed here for the first time and will definitely be back. Fantastic views and beautiful sunsets. Very friendly owners nothing is too much trouble. Great for chilling out and just listening to the sounds around you. We even heard Owls at night. As others have said the toilets are rough and ready but if you are fully self sufficient shower wise this is not an issue. Great bunch of regulars always keen to help.

Here for the first camp of the year to check the motorhome got through winter OK, and that was the only reason for staying just one night: I expect we'll be back again to stay longer as the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Badly potholed access track, but a very warm welcome from the owner. An elevated open site, mature trees to the rear recently felled, so it could get more wet and windy than, say, the Culzean CCC site on the other side of the main road below. But the panoramic views over to Arran, Kintyre and Ireland are absolutely stunning, especially at sunset; the pitches are widely spaced and staggered so everyone can enjoy these. Totally silent at night, so it was very tranquil and restful. The separate ladies and gents toilets (1 loo, 2 sinks, free shower) are, as the owner said, 'rough and ready', BYO everything, and a bit of a trek through the farm yard at night, but hey! the fees are only £10 a night and they were clean with hot water. Though the site was half full (there are about a dozen EHU pitches plus a handful of empty seasonals), we were the only folk using these facilities as the others were caravanners. Didn't see a pot wash, but if I was tenting I would just use the sinks at the toilet. The ground was sodden after all the rain, but there are hard stands - though we our chocks didn't quite offset the slope. Water stand-pipe easy to access for filling the van. Dog run off-lead up 'the old road' through the Thomaston Woods for views down to the famous Turnberry golf course lighthouse and Ailsa Craig, though be prepared for this farm track being very muddy indeed.
We only stayed one night this time but we know the area well. You can get the train to Glasgow from Girvan, now sadly run-down apart from its new supermarket; the swimming pool there has long gone but its golf course is good fun and good value; the several butchers' local beef is excellent; and a boat trip to Ailsa Craig is a grand day out. Memorial to the Russian Navy cruiser 'Varyag' at Lendalfoot south of Girvan is a beautiful monument in a beautiful setting - you could stop on the way to pretty Portpatrick and Logan Botanic Gardens in Galloway, or the ferry to Ireland. Other reviews have mentioned Culzean - if you are not NT members, park at Maidens at the south end and walk in free like the locals do, though that won't get you into the Castle on top of the cliffs.

We originally visited Thomaston Farm due to a love of the Village of Maidens. We have found Hugh and Fiona to be very accommodating and pleasant.
The close proximity of Culzean Castle and it`s many miles of woodland walks, Walled Gardens and Homefarm Auditorium are a tranquil experience for all visitors.
The site facilities are basic but well kept. We tend to use our vans facilities though. The raised position of the well kept site give fantastic views over the Firth of Clyde to the isle of Arran and stunning Sunsets can be expected and enjoyed.
The village of Dunure is worth a visit, the small harbour is a lovely setting for a coffee or something stronger with coffee shop and village pub at the harbour head.
The locals are so welcoming it has to be experienced to be believed. I can`t recommend the site and area enough.

This is a nice site, the only gripe we had is that you can't see the CS sign from the road. All you can see is a sign to Glenside Farm; the Thomaston sign is buried in the trees. If you go wrong you can turn in the entrance to Culzean Castle, the entrance you want is by the bus stop on the left going west. The access road is wide enough but a bit rough in places. We didn't find the facilities so can't comment on them, we use our own anyway. Rubbish disposal and the CWD are ok.
Much the best part is the wonderful view over to Arran, you can watch the boats which look like little dots. The village of Maidens itself is ok, has a small shop and a muddy harbour area which looks much better when the tide is in. There is a small beach just to the south of the village which would be ideal for small children as the sea is calm and shallow, too shallow for serious swimming.
There is a Co-op and a garage at Maybole 5 miles away and an Asda at Girvan down the coast, the only reason to go there. The best shopping centre is at Ayr, Dunure is worth a look around.

I loved staying at this site. The views were amazing and the owners of the farm were easy going and really friendly and helpful. Sitting at the edge of a field of golden barley waving in the breeze, looking down over the Isle of Aran was an extremely relaxing experience.
I was there for three nights, and did not tire of it. The proximity to Culzean Castle is also a bonus, as you can spend a great day out there.
The facilities are basic, but this was not a problem for me. I have experienced much worse in my travels, and had a lovely warm shower at this site. The owner's sons did a little repair job on my van for me at no charge, which I was very grateful for as it has kept the Scottish rain out for the rest of the summer.
I would also like to recommend the home grown potatoes from the farm, they are very delicious so take home a bag.
I would definitely revisit this site and recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful break.

We are a family who have stayed several times at this camp site in Our Old VW campervan.
Every time we stay we enjoy the peace and quiet of the site and like being so close to the working farm, Our wee girl loves watching the tractors and chickens.
The Owners are very hard working and always make You welcome, but at the same time respect Your space and privacy, which is nice.
A nice walk down the farm road takes You to Culzean castle, which We get into for free with Our national Trust membership, which is great to walk around, also has restaurant, great wee book shop, children's play area and castle and gardens, can spend many hours just taking in the sights and sea views.
The toilet facilities are basic, but clean and the showers are ample and warm,
Great value for money and a very family friendly sight, no children's play area, but not required as it would spoil the tranquillity of the sight.

A lovely site with smashing views and friendly, helpful owners. Small but perfectly formed. Basic facilities as expected but clean.
A short walk to Culzean Country Park and onto the beach at Maidens. A short drive to the Farm Park at Heads of Ayr, a great day out for kids I'm told (don't have any young'uns), and hour from the lovely hourbour village of Portpatrick and in the other direction about 45 minutes for the Arran ferry.

We've just returned from a 10 night stay, which included the May late Bank Holiday, at Thomaston Farm which is a Camping and Caravan Club Certificated Site near Culzean Castle in Ayrshire.
Thomaston Farm is adjacent to the working farm run by Hugh and Fiona McFadzean.
The site is located up a lane about 1/2 a mile from the main road which means that it quiet and peaceful. It's elevated position gives it 'views-to-die-for' over the coastline, the Forth of Clyde and the Isle of Aran. The sunsets were stupendous with sky beyond Aran still tinged with red at 11.00pm.
The site officially accommodated 10 units - caravans, tents or motorhomes and there were, also, a number of what seemed to be seasonal vans there. There are 10 EHUs although long leads may be needed for some pitches. The pitches are very large and 6 have an area of hard standing surrounded by grass. For most of our stay there was only 2 or 3 other occupied units on site.
We were able to position our 'van with the front lounge window facing the beautiful view out over the coastline. There are some hedges but I imagine some of the pitches would be rather exposed in windy weather, especially due to the elevated location.
There is a small toilet block in the farmyard with a ladies and gents section with a toilet and shower in each. Although these were clean they were very basic. We used the bathroom in our 'van as did most other 'vanners. There are a CDP, a waste water point and fresh water tap near to the caravan pitches. Local tourist information booklets are kept in a prefabricated building near to the farmhouse. Fiona sells her home-made jams and free-range eggs from their own hens.
The farm is a working one and a bit untidy with some potential hazards for young children. Young children would need to be supervised in the farm area, including going to the toilet block. There is no children's playground although there is plenty of room for children to run about on grass near to the pitches.
TV reception was rather variable. Using our van's directional aerial we got quite a few digital channels from Northern Ireland but these a bit 'come and go'. I, also, manage to get a satellite signal on our portable system. Mobile phone reception was good.
A real bonus is the warm and friendly attitude of owners Hugh and Fiona. We were delayed and arrived just after 9.30pm on the Sunday evening. We were, nonetheless, greeted, by name, by Hugh and his 2 teenage sons who showed us to our pitch and helped us set up the 'van! Fiona was, too extremely welcoming and helpful volunteering information and willing to answer any questions we had about the locality.
Across the road from the site, about 10 minutes walk, is the entrance to Culzean Castle country park. The park is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and runs for 200 landscaped acres along between the road and coastline. The castle was remodelled by Robert Adam and again in Victorian times and is a stunning mansion overlooking the sea. We toured the castle enjoying its beautiful decoration and furnishings. As well as the castle itself there are numerous other features including a second hand bookshop, sweetie shop, restaurants, walled garden and lake within the park. The admission to the castle and park costs £13 per adult or £8 for just the park (NT members free). We discovered that after 4.00pm the park can be visited, unofficially, for free and we spent a lovely June evening cycling around. Pedestrians are supposed to leave the park by sunset.
For family days out Heads of Ayr Farm Park about 5 miles away has an interesting range of animals, quad bikes and other activities. At 50+ not our 'cup of tea' but it seemed very popular and busy when we passed.
About 3 miles from site is 'Electric Bray'. Due to a 'trick' of the geography the road appears to be going uphill when it is fact sloping downwards. It is possible to let one's car or bike roll 'uphill'. There is road access and parking near to a quiet and secluded, sandy beach, within 2-3 miles of the campsite, with stunning views of Culzean Castle.
For shopping the site is located about 3 miles from the coastal village of Maidens where there is a small shop and pub. Further south about 12 miles away is the small coastal town of Girvan opposite to Ailsa Craig. About 10 miles north is the pleasant large, coastal town of Ayr with a full range of interesting shops including supermarkets. The small town of Maybole is about 5 miles inland from the site.
For those who enjoy country sites with basic and rudimentary facilities we would HIGHLY recommend Thomaston Farm site and we would be very happy to return there. If you fancy the CCC's Culzean Castle site try Thomaston instead - it has better views and we only paid £10.00 per night including EHU.
