Hi, although this review is for June 2014 I'd like to mention that my wife Lizzie and I have stayed on this site many, many times since 1986. Without doubt it's the best camping site for us in North Devon. Watermouth Cove is just a 5 minute walk from the site, safe for kids and dogs. The castle is worth a visit. It's ideal as a base to explore Exmoor and surrounding countryside and not too far from Dartmoor. The owners are very ably assisted by their sons, nothing is to much trouble for them. The sons have the reins when Dad and Mum take a break. The two modern toilet, (free) shower blocks are kept spotless and the grass areas are kept close cut. The small shop/reception is usually well stocked. Give it a go, it's a gem, you won't regret it.

Absolutely great site that we heard of 'word of mouth'.

The pitches are all really generous (about 10m x 10m) and loads with electric hook-up to keep the kids happy. Most are very level and well drained but they do start sloping as you move up the site closer to the cliffs; inevitable really. They were also really clearly marked out with clear posts and / or long grass strips and shrubs.

Facilities were clean and well maintained; and reports from regular visitors are that the shop is well stocked in season. Excellent play area between the shop and pub; and TV / Games room down by the shop.

It was nice to have a good pub at the end (but off) site; you walk through a gate into their beer garden. Really good food and they run a discount card for £2. 00 / year. Saving quite a bit on meals. Apparently you can also use the clubhouse at Watermouth Cove next door.

The beach is lovely but 230+ steps might put some off. For level beaches Combe Martin is 5 minutes drive and Woolacombe about 15 - 20 minutes. Loads of other stuff to do very nearby (within 30 minutes drive) and Watermouth Castle is only 5 minutes walk and perfect for kids up to about 8 years old.

For shopping supplies there is a good sized Tesco on the campsite side of Ilfracombe and a Lidl in the town centre. There is also a camping shop in Combe Martin.

The final tick has to be the price. For the 3 of us with electric in low season it was only £18. 00 / night which is incredible for this part of Devon.

We'll definitely be going back for years to come. And it seems that we're not the only ones.

In short, we loved the site.

Visited with tent and 3 young children (7, 7, 5)

Pitches were good size, and variety - some with the views but no hook ups, some with shelter but not getting the sun, some flat, most slightly sloping.

The play area was a huge surprise for such a small site, it was brilliant. Built in the shade of some huge trees it had loads of climbing equipment and our children loved it spending time there. The site also has a small shop, indoor games area (TV, pool table, table football) and outdoor table tennis. It was the same 3 Staff doing all the jobs, I did not ask but it appeared to be a well run family site.

In the evening at 7pm they put on a couple of things whilst we were there. 1) tractor rides - tractor pulling a couple of small trailers, towed the children around the site. 2) Toboggan run - toboggans on some rails, down a slope. Simple and only on for a short time but again loved by all.

The beach is a 15 minute walk down some steep steps but was nice and saved the hassle of driving and trying to park at more popular ones.

I was worried when it was listed as having a pub on site, but this was slightly outside the site by being at one end and is a pub in its own right so did not mean noise and drunken returning campers.

Will return again.

Lovely quiet site, even with the big group of bikers camping near us!

Right next to a pub which is handy if you want a drink or something to eat, although we didn't visit as it was Beer Festival weekend so was a bit busy.

We were right next to the play area so we were able to keep an eye on the children.

Facilities were good, clean and usable, little shop selling the basics.

Very friendly lovely staff, making sure everything was all right which it was.

Hoping to visit again
