Just come back from 3 night at this campsite and thought it was brilliant.

It has been totally transformed from the previous owners with a new, more upmarket chilled out site with not too many plots, firepits for campfires, on site bistro, good toilet facilities and a fairly basic children play area.

No sight of any midges, 8 miles from Kielder water and forest as well as just over an hour to unspoilt beaches we couldn't have had a better time all for £17 a night for 2 adults/2 kids.

As a previous review has stated it could do with a good mow but I understand from the owners this on the to-do list as well as a few other cosmetic changes.

Once this is done it would be worth a 10/10.

 Message from site owners:

Boe Rigg re-opened at the end of May 2013 as a completely new business, owned & managed by my husband, Andrew & myself, Maddy. We undertook a refurbishment of the existing Bistro & turned it into a fine food cafe, called 'Boe Rigg Coffee Shed'. We now sell homemade bread, local produce, original art & gifts.

The campsite is a work in progress, however the crazy golf course has been permanently removed. We are taking on-board and reacting to all guests feedback during this first season, in an effort to make this a great site for forthcoming visitors. We hope guests can appreciate that we are small acorns at the moment (running campsite for only 6 weeks!) but we will hopefully grow into something very special.

Just returned from an amazing weekend at this Campsite.

In fairness the fantastic weather did help. But other than that this was so so much better than expected. Proper, on the ground campfires, spacious pitches, amazing views, friendly helpful owners and an amazing licensed cafe with ice cream to die for (didn't eat otherwise but food we saw coming out looked amazing). And a total bargain at only £10 for my son and I!

Clean, modern facilities which we didn't really use but only because we brought our own toilet and were only here for a night.

The only (slight) negative was that the field could have done with a mow if only so my son could have used the football goals properly but given that we prefer rough and ready campsites its a minor complaint that didn't spoil our time here. I do think this would possibly put off people who prefer a more manicured campsite though.

To address previous comments.

There are midges. Don't know if this was weather / time of year related but there were lots and sounds like even more the day before we arrived. Didn't spoil our stay though.

Didn't use hook up but there looked to be at least 10 well spaced out hook up points with taps too so this shouldn't be a problem for those needing this facility.

The chemical toilet is now well sign posted.

Reluctant to post such a glowing review as don't want this to be inundated but it is a real find.

I took a group of students to The Boe Rigg for the weekend using a Living Social voucher. We stayed in the Bunkhouse and had the entire facility to ourselves. We had 10 people but there was room for 14. We definitely had enough space.

The sleeping facilities were clean, tidy and welcoming. The kitchen and living area was super, although we did have to wipe down the table before we used it. Everything else was really clean though and looked good. There was no oven but the cooker and the microwave worked well. We cooked our own meals and the table was large enough to seat all 10 of us for meals. The lounge was great, we brought a projector to watch films in the evening. One shower in the girls restroom was not working but the other one was great, with high water pressure and warm water.

It is close to Kielder Water Park, about 20 minute drive. Bellingham is close, about 5 minute walk, and has shops like the Co-op and a nice pub. Although we didn't spend much time in the village because the bunkhouse was comfortable enough to play games, eat and hang out. I would highly recommend the bunkhouse at the Boe Rigg and we will definitely be looking into returning this year.

Spent one night at Boe Rigg. Agree with other comments about problems with finding a pitch near a hook up but we were lucky as it wasn't busy. We have camped in this area and nearer to Kielder for many years - and the real plus point about this site was no midges!

It was quite quiet and we had plenty of space around us which is always nice. Lovely views. The showers were great - good water pressure and lovely and hot. Very clean too.

Plenty of water taps and bins on the camp site too. Had a yummy breakfast in the cafe which is open from 10. 30. It's clear that there a still a few teething problems - no signs for chemical toilet disposal but I think this will be a top rate campsite !

The Hollybush pub at Greenhaugh is a short drive away - and does a very good pub supper.

I don't normally go on sites with little or no reviews, on this trip we took a chance and what a belter of a site this is.

I agree with a lot of the above about this site, but after talking to the owner he has only been running the site for three months. I mentioned the power problem and he has already had someone in to look at these being moved. He has planes for another shower block and some move camping rooms.

We have been here 8 days and for the first two and the last two we are on our own, I can not believe a site with spotless loos and showers, a fair sized play park for the site, football post in the fields is not full (I am enjoying the quiet) but a site like this should be buzzing.

D is approachable and is keen to hear feed back and as already acted on some.

Try this site, but please wait two more days as I am enjoying it to myself!

I'd like to be more positive about this site, but there are some basic problems which need to be sorted out very soon.

The Manager is very pleasant and pretty laid back (didn't have to leave credit card details when booking, didn't pay on arrival), and the location is good (it's true, there were very few if any midges)with attractive views albeit noisy sheep (take earplugs).

The toilet facilities are part of the Scandinavian-style main block that comprises the bunkhouse, chalet and bistro. They look swish initially (Dyson hand driers if you please), with 3 cramped showers in the Gents plus 2 urinals & 2 cubicles, but the lock on one of the cubicles was broken throughout our 2 days there with no obvious attempt made to mend it or even put up some kind of notice (eg 'Please knock before entering!')- 2 cubicles could also be inadequate if the site was full.

The broken lock was symptomatic of some general maintenance shortcomings: the bins weren't emptied at all while we were there (so they were overflowing), and there was a major problem with mud in the camping field, with vehicles getting stuck.

Meanwhile, down the slope next to the main block, workmen were apparently lavishing plenty of attention and gravel, etc. (which would have come in useful in the mud) on a new crazy golf set-up. Wrong priorities I think, even if they are planning to improve the access to (and within) the camping fields in the future.

The EHUs are plentiful but badly positioned (see previous review), and ought to be relaid. The two washing-up sinks should also be in the camping field rather than near the main block. Pitches for motorhomes looked very cramped together.

Camping field(s) aren't very flat, and there are some decidedly damp/boggy bits.

Bistro is attractive and food OK, but some of it looked pre-cooked and then reheated.

My general impression is that the camping element is rather low down on their list of priorities, and/or the Manager is being expected to juggle too many plates at once. Shame, because it could be a good place, but based on this experience I wouldn't return.

The Boe Rigg is a fairly new farm site just outside Bellingham in Northumberland that we chose to try out our new tent last weekend. I was a little wary about picking somewhere with no reviews logged, but from the information and photos on the website we decided to give it a go.

Because it was the long Jubilee weekend, and half term, I booked by phone in advance for a pitch with electric hook up at £9. 00 p. P. P. N (£8. 00 without). On arrival we were directed to the bistro/restaurant where we were booked in by the friendly staff who showed us where the tent fields were, up a bit of a hill.

There are 3 EHU points but unfortunately we weren’t able to find a suitable pitch that would give us access to one of them. This was partly because the points are not particularly well located and are too close together, but it has to be said it was exacerbated by some fairly inconsiderate pitching by the people already on the site. Our only options were to a) squeeze fairly tightly between two other tents, b) pitch right next to the access point between the two fields (which we didn’t fancy as the site was getting busy and there were vehicles coming and going between the fields quite frequently), or c) pitch on some very uneven ground at the bottom of the second field. In the end we decided to do without, and pitched on the higher ridge of the second field. The people next to us had done the same but had a much longer cable than us and had managed to lay it right across the field to use the hook up.

We pitched with the back of our tent to the wind which meant we had a lovely open view over the surrounding countryside and farmland.

The ‘eco friendly’ facilities building houses the male and female showers and toilets with 2 showers in the ladies and apparently 3 in the men’s, a 14-bed ‘bunk house’, a self-contained holiday apartment and the bistro/restaurant. The showers were good with plenty of hot water and the block was clean and well maintained. There are about 6 caravan pitches close to the main building. There is a small children’s play area and a little washing up hut, again both close to the building. It’s a bit of a hike from the top tent field to the loos and I wouldn’t like to have to negotiate it during the night as the ground is pretty uneven, but fortunately the need didn’t arise!

Bellingham village is not far away. It has two or three pubs and one café that we saw, and there is a well-stocked local Co-op. On Sunday we followed a lovely walk marked Hareshaw Linn leading to a beautiful waterfall. We felt we’d earned Sunday lunch afterwards but instead of the village pubs we opted to return to the Boe Rigg and try their bistro. I wasn’t expecting much as it was after 3pm but we had a very pleasant 2 course lunch of chicken liver pate followed by roast lamb with Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. A little pot of extra gravy was brought with the mint sauce, which I thought was a good touch. There is an outside terrace which would be lovely to have a drink in the sunshine but the weather wasn’t really up to it this weekend. The bistro closes at about 4pm so unfortunately evening meals aren’t available.

Although we started off a little unimpressed by the drawbacks of the campsite it definitely grew on us over the weekend and I think we would probably go back. Yes, the pitching arrangements are a little haphazard, but equally I don’t like sites that are too manicured and laid out like housing estates so you pays your money and takes your choice! To be fair, when we chatted to the owner he acknowledged there were issues with the siting of the electric points and the pitching around them and it sounded like they were going to re-think that. I suspect some of the issues are just to do with it being early days for them and will be resolved as the site develops and becomes more established. Who knows, perhaps in a few years we’ll be wistfully remembering when it was a very natural site!
