We went to this site to try out our new trailer tent and weren't disappointed. The site is easy to find and in a great location.
Check in was easy and there was a warden on hand to show us to our pitch. The pitch itself was big enough although there was an inconveniently located tree which dripped sap all over the tent!
The toilet blocks were plentiful, heated and very clean. There were also pot washing facilities at each toilet block, which meant you never had to queue. I'd recommend taking a pair of rubber gloves though, as the water was ridiculously hot!
There is lots to keep the kids occupied on the site, a swimming pool, a couple of playgounds, tennis courts, mini golf and plenty of room to run around. There was also kids entertainment each evening which the kids loved although it got a bit repetitive.
The only (small) downsides I could mention, are that there is quite a bit of road noise at night, but not enough to stop you sleeping, and the swimming pool could do with a couple more family changing rooms as there was only one.
Overall I'd say it's a fantastic site and I'd definitely go again.

Just returned from a weekend at Holgates for the Bonfire and Fireworks weekend. We have stayed on this site several times this year and my previous reviews were good. We have been touring for three years and been to lots of different sites but this is our favourite site by far. The pool complex is clean, the bar and restaurant area is welcoming on a cold evening, the site put on a bonfire and firework display despite the horrendous wet weather! We got very wet and it would have been better if dry but we still had an excellent weekend even with constant rain, and it rained a lot! The staff are really friendly and the food in the restaurant is excellent, we love the Sunday roasts at Holgates. The site closes from 8th Nov to 22nd Dec then its open all year, we are going for New Year we are really looking forward to it. This is a five star site and we have yet to find one that we prefer within driving distance of home. I cannot say anything negative about this site as it ticks all the right boxes, we love it and its a credit to the owners.

We stayed here for Halloween weekend, (3 nights). Brilliant site, very clean. The pool are is fab and the bar / bistro is great. The shop has everything you need. We didn't eat in the bistro, but the food looked good. The bar has an adults only area too.
There is a small games room for the children and a couple of outside play areas.
The site fees are a little more expensive but I think it's well worth it.
Plenty to do in the area and some lovely walks.
We will be returning.

This site is the best I have very been to. I have been probably 10 times altogether and still love going there. It is a tad pricey but they seem charge about the same rate all year round. The leisure complex is great if it rains as the kids and adults enjoy the indoor pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. It is all exceptionally clean and very well maintained. The cafe bar shop prices are not rip off and staff always very pleasant.
The pitches too are fantastic. Fully serviced and never ever muddy.
Plenty to do around here as well. Pubs walking drive to shops, go to grange on the train.
We live only 3/4 hour away but love to go here with family, never any noisy types on here neither.

This was our first proper stay with a new unit we had bought to try out the whole camping thing and it was excellent. Won't repeat everything else has said in reviews as they seem fair but would highlight:
Road is a bit narrow as you approach it but fairly easy to navigate if you take it easy
Staff very helpful, although gate works on number plate recognition so a minute of confusion occurs as you are not sure whether to park this side of the gate or drive up and get refused meaning you would have to reverse! We parked this side - still not sure of answer.
Pitches flat with gravel and grass; water and electric on each pitch; toilets clean and washing up facilities good; pitches spread out - don't be tempted to pitch until you get passed the one way bit as, although nearer, didn't seem as appealing to us; also the pitches at the very top seemed very busy so don't go too far
Pool etc great although very busy, particularly on Sunday morning when the inflatables come out! Very enjoyable though
Price is quite expensive but in comparison to other sites there is a lot on offer but still very civilised and fairly quiet - more like a continental site in many ways
Not the best part of South Lakes to be honest - more of a place to go and stay on site. To explore there are better sites but these don't have the facilities of course

Just returned from my second trip to Holgates and it is my favourite site. It is more expensive than other sites but its worth paying more for the following reasons:-
They charge the same rate all year so you know what your paying whatever the season!
The pool area is fantastic, they do a kids splash session on Sundays @ 10.30 with inflatables and don't charge extra, our kids loved it.
The food in the restaurant is excellent, the Sunday lunch is a must (all three courses!) and its not over priced.
The pitches are large on gravel and are all service with TV hookup which is useful as we couldn't get a reception.
The toilets and showers are immaculate and the staff are friendly and helpful.
This site take some beating and the area is lovely, we went for a walk through the woods and the views from some parts of the site are stunning. Its a top class site with top class facilities and a lovely location.
If I was ever considering siting my van for a season then this would be the site, however, I cant afford it, its mega expensive to site your tourer here so I will stick to weekends. They are only closed for a few weeks and open nearly all year round so its ideal for a winter break, we have booked for New Year this year.
Its a credit to the owners and you can tell that it is not owned by a large company.

This was our second visit to Holgates. Our first visit was September 2008 when we were Camping Virgins.
We love this place. The site is spotless. The toilets 10 out of 10
For families, there are two lovely outdoor playgrounds and an indoor small play area and a small games room.
Outdoor pitch and putt area and lovely walks make it great for anyone.
They have a fab shop here that stocks far more than what you might need.
A lovely indoor pool with sauna/steam room that caters for all and has Adult only times as well. It also has a gym.
It's a nice walk into Silverdale, about 25 mins. But a lovely Italian restaurant and a couple of local pubs make it worthwhile. The Silverdale hotel has a lovely beer garden.
This is the dearest campsite that we have used, but you get what you pay for.

What a site! Me, my wife and 5 year old daughter have been touring for just 12 months so we have only managed 7 different sites. However this is by far the best site we have stayed on. The pitches are fantastic (hard ground pegs are required.Which they do sell in their shop). The site is stunning both in setting and facilities. Usually the owners of big sites hide away in offices. Not this one, Frank Holgate was always around talking to staff and residents.
We are so pleased with the site we have booked to go back at the end of May. Can't wait!
Pool, Cafe, Bar, Games Room, Parks.Everything, all well managed, cared for, calm and quiet.
All pitches seem to have water, waste, electric and TV points. Toilets and Showers are ideal and there are campers kitchens.
The shop is small but well stocked with everything you could need.Prices are good.
The last mile is a narrow road but ok. We met a bus coming the other way but there was plenty of space to squeeze by.

We've just returned from a four night break at Holgates. Had a great time. The site is huge, good pitch sizes and fully serviced. The toilet block was spotless.
It snowed as soon as we pitched up and stayed that way for a couple of days so we didn't bother going off site. The pool facilities were very good and we had three excellent meals in the restaurant, not too pricey either.
We stayed in the top area and my only gripe was that the toilet block in that area was shut. I appreciate there were only a few vans on site but for the pitch price I expected the block to be open as it wouldn't have been much extra work to clean it.
A particularly good choice for a winter trip. Well recommended.

This is the first time we have stayed on this site, we decided to treat ourselves to a post Xmas break and arrived on boxing day. The site fees are higher than we normally pay, however, the saying is true that you get what you pay for! The leisure club is really nice and clean, it is open until 9pm at night. The bar area is nice and relaxing, and the food is excellent. The toilet blocks are spotless and the pitches are large and spread out. This is a top class site and a credit to the owners, its worth paying that bit more. We enjoyed it so much that we extended our stay. The only bad thing is the road into the site, it is single track at some parts and scary when you are towing a van. I would recommend this site to anyone as it caters for all ages.
