Very friendly staff and shower and toilet facilities very clean and tidy. Showers have obviously been updated since the last reviews as they were free when we got their but there is only four in both the ladies and the gents, which was ok for us as the site was pretty empty when we got there. There is a 20p charge for electricity points in the toilets for hairdryers etc which is quite reasonable plus the driers are 20p for 7 mins, which dries a couple of damp towels.
The main field was waterlogged as it was raining all day when we arrived so their was no tents pitched there, but the surrounding individual pitches where pitchable but had just been re turfed so it was very soft under foot and ended up quite muddy by the time we left (4 days).
Hawkshead itself is wonderful! it has dog friendly pubs, shops and tea rooms. It is quite expensive in the village but the camp site charges where very reasonable in my experience.
There is no play areas for children but there is a games room / tv room which has a portable telly and a pool table with two gaming machines which all cost 50p. I will return in the 6 weeks school hols and hope to have just as good and peaceful time!

OK, the weather could have been more generous yet this site was my daughter's first introduction to a campsite.
The site was spacious and well maintained with regularly cleaned toilet blocks etc and with a separate annexe to the main block for washing up where the water was hot and there was even a microwave oven!
The reception staff were friendly and helpful and the 2 minute walk into the village of Hawkshead meant that the car was left by the tent.
There was a TV room/lounge but no children's facilities per se.Not that this mattered in the least as my daughter found enough amusement with other camper's children and the nearby stream!
All in all, an excellent site.

We've just got back today after staying at the croft for a week. Very good value, clean shower blocks. Although showers are 20p the water is hot and you can easily shower just using 1 20p. Also really good to have electric points for hairdryers etc.
Milkman did come around too late - 10am most mornings - breakfast definitely over. We did have a lot of rain and the field did get boggy.
Hawkshead lovely village, recommend queens head for food = would definitely go back.

Fantastic camp site, Highly recommend it to anyone. Spotless showers and loos and well kept field to camp where you like. Little stream runs along the back of the site. You are situated in a prime location, literally across from the beautiful village of Hawkshead. Plenty of lovely shops to browse through. Good pubs, serving food, and a stunning place to walk in. Ambleside a short drive away from where you can catch the ferry to Bowness. Cant wait to go back.

Phoned up on the morning of our visit and booked a static caravan for the weekend after half term week. The staff were very helpful, friendly and accommodating. Caravan was very clean and tidy. The site is a very short walk into a small village with various shops and pubs. Would recommend

Used to go to The Croft 3/4 times per year (pre kids). Have just made our 1st visit in 12 years and nothing has really changed. This is a great little site ideally situated for exploring the lakes. Hawkshead is a lovely village where you can enjoy some great pub food, gift shops etc. The facilities on site have largely remained the same. The toilet/shower block though clean and regularly serviced is in need of updating now. Get rid of the 20p slot machines and make the cubicles larger! We brought our 3 kids with us this time and they were very happy but it would be nice if there was an area to play ball, badminton etc. Completely away from the tents. This is a chilled out place to stay free from pointless restrictions but 'policed' enough to maintain a civilised atmosphere. We will return.

Stayed at this site for 4 nights. When we arrived it was a sunny day but it rained for most of the other 3 days.
We pitched our tent away from the shower blocks near the trees but unfortunately the ground became waterlogged. The drainage is very poor and we ended up living in a mud bath.
I think for the prices charged then the site should ensure better drainage or at least warn people of the very boggy areas.

We are not experienced campers but my husband persuaded me to stay at the Croft Caravan site in Hawkshead. I have to say we all enjoyed it. The staff were pleasant on arrival and the site was clean and quiet. You can pitch your tent where you want and the fact it is so close, a 5 min walk, to Hawkshead centre is great. It is very pretty in Hawkshead with a lovley church, shops and teashops and a few lovley pubs. We had a gorgeous meal in the Queens Head. Its expensive but well worth it. There is no playground for kids but we visited Grizedale Forest which is not far away and there is a great outdoor park and the walks are great for kids with all sorts of wooden sculptures of animals, bees nests, parachutes etc and its free! Beatrix Potters house is also nearby. The toilet/shower block was very clean but it is a pain that you have to run out of the shower if you need to top up the payment of 20p in the machine outside the shower. This needs updating. Its good that there are sockets for hairdryers and you can borrow them from reception. They also have a freezer where you can cool ice packs. There is a small gamesroom. A milkman comes round in the mornings but he could do with coming a little earlier most people had already had breakfast or left for the day when he came.
We had a good time and would definitely go back.

Another great weekend here - we've been at least once a year for the past few years. It had been raining heavily all week before we arrived on the Friday, but magically stopped on our arrival for just long enough to pitch the tent before it re-started for the rest of the night until the early hours. No problem with water-logging though - the whole site was obviously wet but not as muddy as we've seen it before.Saturday was lovely and so was the Sunday morning as we packed (regrettably) away. Toilets and showers were as usual kept clean and supplied with loo roll and paper towels. One good thing about this site is that there is no limitation to the times you can shower - I was making an early hours trip to the toilet (why does that always happen camping?!) and someone was quite happily taking a hot shower.
Hawkshead was as lovely and picturesque as ever - a magnet for our ten-year-old with pocket money burning a hole waiting to be spent in the gift shops!
No doubt we'll be back again later in the season. It's just a chilled weekend here - all noise levels are subdued by eleven at the latest ( bar the odd pub-crawler but you get that anywhere ) and the owner drives round at least twice each evening checking all is ok. Staying up chatting with friends is fine as long as you show some respect, and that's fine by us.
Oh - and there is a milkfloat comes round each morning with all the essentials and fresh orange juice to perk you up!
All in all, a great little site, good location, clean facilities - enjoy!

This is the 3rd time of staying here over the last few years. Unfortunately nothing has changed. Except the cost of a pitch, £16.75 per night for tent, 2 adult sand NO electric and still having to pay 20p for a shower. At this price showers should be free so you don't have to use the archaic system of putting money in a box and running into shower cubicle. The showers and toilets are clean, plenty of hot water but in need of modernisation its becoming to look dated.
Very noisy after 11pm til well after midnight vehicles still driving round site, and someone sat there with a Land Rover shining headlights into tents. Hawkshead village just over the road is beautiful, with good food and drink available from pubs and cafes. If you visit Sun Inn for a meal a portion of onion rings is a MUST. Homemade in crispy batter.DELICIOUS!
All in all not happy with site at present. It needs modernising and is looking unkempt. Having looked around the area there are more sites around at more reasonable rates.
