We had the most marvellous four days here as part of our first tour of Scotland and we were blessed with wonderful sunny, warm weather. Our two girls (14 and 10) have been nagging us ever since to return!
The site is set in a pine forest with a small river running through with pitches for tents right alongside it. Our children enjoyed playing around the river but it may be a worry with smaller children. Our pitch was a good size although an awkward angle to get into and sloping but we didn't care. Everything else about this magical place was so good.
The facilities were very good. As mentioned before, the new block has individual rooms with shower cubicle, basin and toilet so plenty of space and very warm. However, there are only about six of them and they are unisex. With so many tents and it being August, you almost always had to queue and our 14 year old (being 14) found this off-putting. She almost always used the loo in the old block which had separate ladies & gents.
The area is dotted with cycle paths which are mostly off-road. The chap at reception gave us a little booklet which had all the main routes on which was most useful. The paths went through the campsite so it was really easy to get on them. Hire bikes if you don't take them with you - it's a fab and easy way to get around.
We cycled to and around Loch Eilean, to Glenmore and to Loch Morlich. Loch Morlich is great for watersports - you can hire kayaks, canoes, windsurfers, wetsuits for a reasonable amount. The beach is beautiful white sand, pine trees behind and the mountains in the background. The water is unbelievably blue.
We drove to the Osprey Centre (easy to park our big van) and to the Cairngorm Mountain where we took the funicular to the top. You can't get out onto the mountain but there is a viewing point for photos etc.
It was a good 20 minute walk to Aviemore but cycle/walking track or pavement all the way. We preferred to cycle which took about 10 minutes. Quite a few shops and pubs in Aviemore. We went to a hotel (can't remember the name) on a Thursday evening for their Scottish buffet - all you can eat for about £7 (£4 for children) which included a big bowl of broth with a roll. Really good value.
The farm shop at the visitor centre is a must. We did most of our food shopping there as they had a lot of good quality items at a reasonable price. Venison burgers, sausages and steaks, fresh fish, smoked trout pate - wonderful, wonderful. The staff there were absolutely delightful. There's also a restaurant there which looks lovely although we didn't try it. The visitor centre is about a 10 minute walk from the campsite.
Lots of activities to do in the area but you do need to be a bit organised about booking ahead as they are popular. You can book in lots of places, including some of the outdoor clothing shops in Aviemore or online. Our two did gorge walking which they enjoyed - we went along as spectators and enjoyed the spectacular walks. Probably a bit pricy for the amount they did but worth it for the experience as we would have never have known about the place otherwise, very beautiful. We will be doing river raiders and clay pigeon shooting when we return next time.
So, a wonderful site and many happy memories. We will definitely return and hope the weather is as kind next time!

Stunning campsite - I'm staying here at the moment, just escaping the rain in a local cafe with Wifi access. The camping area is split into a few different areas, I chose the 'Island' it's in-between a small brook and a larger river - covered in trees it's really secluded and I've got a lovely little spot where my tent opens out onto the river view - lots of trees meant I was able to pop my Hammock as well which makes it all the more relaxing. If you're a light sleeper, bring some ear plugs as the river is a little noisy! The toilet block is lovely - as well as good washing up facilities - inside and heated which is a nice change! They have 'bathrooms' with toilet, basin and shower in your own little room - these are bigger and cleaner than some hotels I've stayed in. The management are very friendly and have a good knowledge of the surrounding area. I guess it's late in the season, but it's very quiet here, from my hammock I can't see any other tents. But I noticed a sign up saying it was full so I guess they don't pack people in. The site is on some main path's that take you off to walks around the local area and further afield depending on how active you're feeling. I will definitely be coming back here again - I'm just hoping the weather clears up a bit as I fancy a night in the hammock!

This is our favourite campsite by far! Our last visit was September 2009, however we make a point of visiting every year! It is located in a forest just outside Aviemore in a beautiful setting by a stream and a river with many walks to set off on from the site.
Even when the site is full it doesn't feel over crowded as I think numbers are limited for safety reasons. Another great thing about this site is that you are left to pick your own pitch. As it is in the forest you aren't in a row of tents and can choose between going by the stream, on the island between the stream and the river or up on the high ground. There is always plenty of space to take your pick.
The shower block is the best I've seen and very clean. There are about six or so 'rooms' with a shower, toilet and hand basin as well as a couple of extra individual WCs. There is also a dish washing area within the block which is great as it means you won't get cold/wet doing your dishes in the bad weather! The hand driers are also well positioned for drying your hair!
The staff are very friendly and the site office has some basic camping provisions such as midge repellent and gas.
We love this site for the tranquillity and friendly staff and although kids are welcome on this child friendly site it is worth remembering that it is a peaceful place where excessive noise isn't appreciated!
I can't recommend this site enough - if you like getting back to nature but can't bear to go without basic luxuries such as hot water then this is definitely the site for you!

As a family of five, we have just spent two weeks at Rothiemurchus campsite. We all thought it was excellent. It is a lovely site camping amongst the trees, looking out for the Red Squirrels, and our children had a lot of fun playing in the woods etc. We were pleased that the management were more than happy to accommodate us with our large family tent. The facilities are also good. There is a clever arrangement of showers and toilets in the same cubicles, ideal for families. The showers were always warm to hot and toilets etc were all cleaned regularly. There is adequate laundry facilities and even a small drying room which was useful. The management of the site were very good, friendly and always helpful. There is so much to do in the area and we were particularly impressed with the excellent cycle network which could be accessed directly from the campsite.

This is one of the best campsite I have stayed on. The location is very good for touring the Cairngorms, the setting is lovely - set in a section of the pine forest which enables you to get a glimpse of red squirrels if you are lucky.
The facilities are on a key fob basis as the campsite has a public footpath running through, the facilitates nearest the tent area are the newest (Or were on our last visit - I know the new owners wish to revamp the site). The block is unisex but there are separate toilet cubicles and then combined toilet & showers cubicles, along with a disabled room, all of which are always lovely and warm. The scullery is also situated in this new block. The only issue is that there are no hair dryers or plug sockets so this can be a slight issue if you can't get your head under the hand dryers!
The pitches are mostly level or though you sometimes have to manoeuvre between roots and the ground can be quite hard - bring extra pegs, parking is not by your tent but the spaces are not far at all. The site is always very peaceful and the trees make good separators between each pitch so you do not get crowded. There are 2 walks straight from the campsite which are nice for an evening stroll or longer trek, also good for Canterelle picking. There is also a newly laid cycle path just beyond the entrance which takes you either to Aviemore (Approx 10-15 minutes cycle) or to Glenmore forest which leads onto the Cairngorm mountain range - both worth a visit.
The reception is a good source of information and if you stay on this site you can receive discount / information on the some of the other Rothiemurchus estate activities.
There is plenty to do in the area for all the family, Loch Insh watersports is also a must. Loch Morlich watersports is nice but Loch Insh is smaller and there is also a pair of Ospreys nesting near by - we have seen them each time we have rented kayaks on Loch Insh (3 years running). Aviemore is 5 minutes drive away where there are plenty of places to eat, drink and shop. You can park opposite The Mountain Cafe which will cost you 70p for 10 hours - yes ten zero hours. The Mountain Cafe is brilliant, a trip there for breakfast will make your visit.
The site is beautiful and unique, such peaceful area that you'll never want to leave.

This was a lovely site and the freedom of pitch choices was excellent. With good spaces set aside for larger tents.
Shower/toilet facilities were a dream. Warm at night which makes the run across the campsite worthwhile! Cubicles tricky to shower small children in so we used the easy access bathroom as a whole family affair which worked well. But would have been nice if the signage said that this was ok so that we didn't have to feel guilty!
The laundry room was a great hiding place from very wet cold conditions!
Improvements to an already great facility could be boot drying space and charging points in the toilet block.
Lots to do in the area and the Visitor Centre had nice farm shop and lovely cafe / restaurant.
Kids could have an adventure and explore the site.Although no dedicated facilities as such.
Owner's response:
We are pleased that the visitor enjoyed his stay at Rothiemurchus and are grateful for his comments. We would, however, like to point out that we offer charging of electrical items free of charge at reception, and we have both a laundry and drying room on site. We also have the ability to dry a limited number of boots, available on request.

We had a great weekend at Rothiemurchus caravan park. The site itself is hidden in the trees of the road at Coylumbridge. The area is beautiful and ideal for dog walking. We used the electric hook up, and kept nice and warm despite the cold temperatures. There are two toilet blocks. The old one is clean and warm, toilets, and a laundry and dishwashing. The new block is the best I have seen. It's like going in to your own en-suite. There is a heater, shower, toilet and sink in the same room so plenty of space to leave your clothes while you shower. Showers are lovely and warm, with a proper sealer cubicle (no plastic shower curtains or cold drafts!) We'll definitely be back.

Just back from a weekend in Aviemore.
Have to say that this is one of the nicest sites I have been on in a long time.
Upon arriving there at approx 13.30 on the saturday was met by dave who manages the site with his wife gill, the seem a very nice couple.
Most of the pitches are serviced with there own water tap, drainage and tv aerial point. All of this is a saviour as I hate filling and emptying water barrels, just connect up the mains adaptor and drainage and your away. Most of the pitches are of reasonable size with type one down, and mostly level.
The site itself is clean and well maintained, I do have to say that its a pretty basic site, no shop, not really much for kids to do unless they bring there own stuff to play with. However the site is amazing if you have a dog, as its is right at the start of some of the areas best walks in the hills etc.
There is two toilet blocks, one old one new, I believe the old one is ok, however there is no showers in it. We never used that block. The new block with the showers in it is very modern and up to date, very clean, tidy, odour free. Water is roasting!, Also has dishing washing facilities, with two chemical toilet emptying points around the campsite.
There is loads to do in and around the Rothiemurchus estate of which the campsite forms part of. For instance, Fishing, Archery, Biking, Tennis, Walking, Canoeing, Bat Walks, River raiders, Clay shooting, Sleddog tours, Pony trekking, Safaris on foot, Indoor climbing, Family activities, Wildlife watching, Safaris by landrover, Quad bike trekking, Wildlife photography, 4x4 Off road driving, Gorge swimming the list goes on.
Aviemore itself is only a 5 - 10 minute drive at most, There is a lot of shops, a couple of decent pubs, one club I think also plenty of places to eat. We ate in the scottish pub one night, excellent food, excellent night.
If you drive up into the cairngorms you can get the Cairngorm funicular railway up to the top of the mountain. Highly recommended.
All in all this campsite although basic is an excellent base for a holiday to this part of scotland. I have already booked a couple of dates for next year. Highly recommended.

Absolutely my favourite campsite, I've been here almost every year since I was 17, and it really is wonderful (especially since the new toilet block was built, and you now get your own bathroom!) you can camp on the top level and look into the trees if you have a dog, and the rest of it is dog free (hooray!).
There are some islands in the river you can pitch a tent on, or you can pitch nearer the toilets, but wherever you go the location is gorgeous, among the ancient forest, and the red squirrels and birds will be all around you! I have composed many tunes on the riverbank and find Rothiemurchus to be one of the most relaxing places I've ever found. Perfect for walking into the mountains, or into Aviemore, and close to Glenmore and Loch Morlich too. Always peaceful and never any noise problems. Midgies can be bad - take repellent!
