 The camp-site is ten minutes walk from the small town of St Geneste-Malivaux (there are other St Genestes in the vicinity - be aware!) which has bars, restaurants, shops including an excellent fresh greengrocer. These are important because there are no sales points on the site.
The site is on a slight, south-facing hill within a park and extends into the countryside with a fishing lake at the bottom of the hill. There are recently renovated shower/toilet facilities &c at the bottom of the hill with older (but clean) cold-water sinks and mainly Turkish toilets at the top. There are 'chalets' for hire but most of the plots are occupied by elderly French people in fixed caravans. Dogs are numerous but are well-behaved and do not create the usual mess. Lovely and peaceful! The staff have very little English but are very amiable and helpful.
There are, allegedly, buses from the town to Annonay to the South and St Etienne to the North although we never saw them. A car is really essential but there are so many attractions within a short drive that that is not a big problem. Within a 25km radius are the art, history and architecture of St Etienne and Firminy but also the Pilat Natural Park where walks (and climbs) of all kinds can be made: several gentle farmland/woodland walks start from the campsite; more rugged walks on the Crests of Pilat are within 20km.
St Etienne has supermarkets and other shops including a GoSport which sells camping gear: be warned, the one-way system is monstrous, so park at Deux-Centre (big Auchan supermarket &c) and get the tram, bus or walk into the centre.
