 Camping 'Le Pinada'
I was unsure if I should review this site here or keep it to myself!
The site was great value for money at 21.50 euros per night in high season for 2 adults and 2 children [age 4 & 7]. The site had an immaculate shower block, a lively little bar & terrace which also sold snacks. There is a popular swimming pool with 3 water-slides and a Basketball/Footy court which kept the teenagers entertained until late into the night. There’s entertainment on the terrace every other night, which was wonderfully cheesy and despite mocking the karaoke/bands/discos, we did end up having a bop with the kids on a couple of occasions - note, if you’re planning to have early nights you’ll want to put some distance between your pitch and the bar. Having said that, we were still sitting out in shorts and T-shirts after midnight and it was too hot to get the children to sleep much before 10:30. We were the only Brits on the site, which we liked, most campers being French or Belgian. Not surprisingly to anyone who has camped in France, the many games of Pétanque spilled out onto the tracks in the early evenings and the campsite had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Le Pinada is in a great position in a pine forest near the village of Villerouge, 10 minutes south of the A61 and is ideally situated halfway between the spectacular city of Carcassonne and the fine sandy beaches of Port-La-Nouvelle, although we spent as much time exploring the interesting villages, vineyards and incredible Cathar castles of the region. The site has large pitches and high hedges for privacy, which also blocked a lot of the wind and gave a little shade, as the area can be windy as well as roasting-hot. Although the breeze eventually covers your car and all your kit in a fine red dust, it also means that we didn’t get buzzed by mozzies.
The pitches were flat but hard and stony due to the ‘bone-dry’ summers so it’s worth putting a bag of sturdy pegs [or large nails] and a hammer in your camping kit. Fires & BBQs are not permitted.
The staff speak little or no English but were very friendly and helpful and kept the facilities clean and well maintained. [Another thanks for going out of their way to find and return my phone]. There was no shop to speak of but you can order wonderful bread and croissants daily and there are a choice of large supermarkets near the A61 junction [10 min drive] as well as a few small shops in the nearby villages.
The site was full or almost full for most of the time we were there so I’d recommend booking ahead.
Definitely a site I’d use again.
