Lovely quiet and tranquil spot off the road.
We were soaked after a day's hiking and switched from tent to Shepard's hut in arrival, as it wasn't booked.
It was toasty warm and we dried all out gear.

Now called "camping at Banks". I wasn't expecting much when I arrived, after all what to expect for a fiver.
Well I was pleasantly surprised. The site is at the end of a woodland track in a lovely glade surrounded by woodland and pastural views.
The toilet, the bit I wasn't looking forward to, is in fact fine, a bucket of sawdust is provided to cover your deposit and this works a treat.
Very basic facilities but all you need if you're self sufficient.
Great spot for exploring Hadrians wall, especially by bicycle,
Highly recommended.

One of my favourite campsites. Proper old school and wonderfully basic.
The composting toilet is something to behold. (Make sure you don't have your phone in your back pocket when going to the loo!)
Small sink with cold water tap to wash hands. Larger sink with cold water tap to wash pots.
The owners are very friendly and helpful and pop round in the evening selling beer from their quad bike!
Very reasonable camping at £5/person per night.
NB very little level ground.

This site is a field 200 yards off the road through Banks village, only accessible on foot or pushing your bike up the grass track. The facilities are a single cold water sink for washing pots, a smaller sink outide the loo and the composting toilet, for which you need to read the instructions for use. We rather liked the eco friendly nature of this and no it does not smell if used properly. There's no lights so you'll need a torch at night. There are two picnic benches to sit/cook at which can be moved to sit by your tent.
Our welcome was simply directions from the house and there are no special facilities for children, but it would be a very safe place for them to play as the nearest car is 200 yards away. You can get soft drinks and beers from the house, but we didn't need to.
The walk up the lane means you are 150 yards from the owner's house, part of the same family who run the village B&B opposite. On our second night we had the entire site to oursleves and had that wonderful feeling of almost wild camping. The only snag was one very noisy sheep!
Banks is only a small village, so come with food and stove. The nearest places to get a meal are Birdoswald Roman Fort (3. 5 miles) or Lanercost Tea Rooms (2 miles) both of which close at 5pm. Brampton is 3. 5 miles away, but that is down a very steep hill, back up and back down again, so not something to do on a bike after setting up camp unless you are super keen.
We chose the site as its on the Hadrian's Cycleway and was an easy ride back to Birdoswald fort, with several mile castles and bits of wall to see along the way. Birdoswald Fort is the one for younder kids to learn about the Romans, which the displays being very child friendly.
Cost is still £5. 00 per person per night so still more than we paid for a site with a shower at Brockalee. But that's not the point of this site. This is basic camping and nice with it.
This is a fab little site. If you want a shower and hot water it's not for you, but if you want to be away from it all and within walking distance of the Roman Wall it's fab.

Campsite owned by same people operating B&B over the road. Site is essentially a field with a portable loo. Very basic but okay if you just need an overnight pitch while walking Hadrian's Wall.
The site is in fact right on the trail path. The owners offer a great service where they will drive you to a local pub for a meal (quite reasonably priced) and a drink and when you are finished the pub bring you back.
£5 per night, which seems cheap, but this is also the rate for other Hadrians wall sites with showers and better facilities.
