 We had crowds, queues and gypsy pickpockets in Florence, so next day drove down the road to Citta di Castello. No, we'd never heard of it either, but what a calm, gracious city is is. The sort of place to wander around, sit in the sun with a beer, wander around, sit in the sun for lunch, and wander around again.
La Montesca camp site is up at the top of a long zig zag hill at the edge of town. The views are great, and it was a shade cooler with a bit of breeze up there.
The down side is it's too far to walk down to the town and then all the way up again - you need to drive down to see the city, but parking at the bottom is easy enough. The site is accessible enough for sensible sized caravans or motorhomes, but it's not really suitable for big outfits - the pitches are smallish, on terraces on the hill.
The toilet facilities are not great - they are in the cellar below the reception building - old, and not easy for disabled people as the slope /steps are steep.
Most people on the site were locals who'd brought caravans up for the whole summer - plus their kitchen fridges, washing machines and cookers. One lady brought us cakes when she had been baking for herself.
No other English there of course, and I doubt if many more will go even after I've written this report. Some of you should - it's a lovely town.
