Just returned from a mixed Bank Holiday weekend stay at Bubble Inn with a group of four tents, kids and dogs and I would have to say that this site is definitely a ‘work in progress’.
The field is sloping in the far corner, becoming flatter towards the surprisingly busy Stenson Road and very rocky under two inches of top soil, decent pegs are strongly recommended. The site is ideally located alongside the Trent and Mersey (Grand Trunk) canal with nice walks both East and West. Close to Derby and surrounding areas. Stenson Fields is little more than a housing estate.
The Bubble Inn is a good pub, with an excellent choice of meals from a la carte to bar snacks and a selection of real ales and lagers with a more ‘vault’ type room where dogs are allowed. We used the pub on each day of our stay, the staff were friendly and accommodating, allowing the children to charge their many electronic gizmos.
The facilities on site leave a lot to be desired. The ‘Men and Women’s toilet block’ is an outdated hand pumped portaloo cabin, which at times was unusable due to the smell, I opted for an early morning use of the ladies side which smelt slightly better. There was no running water in the Gents side and only cold in the pump style tap in the Ladies.
The shower seemed to be the main talking point on the site, it consisted of a wrongly fitted shower basin in a 6’ X 4’ wooden garden shed, raised up on a board and pallets. The shower itself was working well but the shed will not last, the door came off its hinges while we were there. The water point is located down near the canal and is only accessible over rough ground. At £12 a night I do not think that is value for money.
I think we were one of the first to use this site and as such the locals still thought they could use the canal side road through the camp as a ‘lover’s lane’. We confronted two sets on the first two nights and sent them packing in no uncertain terms.
As it is a new site I think a lot of the issues can be put right but until they do I would not return, as I said it is not all bad but still work needs to be done.
I hope this is seen as constructive rather than destructive as the owners and staff are still finding their feet and seemed willing to listen to our comments while we were there and did act upon some of them.
It could be a great site, just needs a little bit of tweaking and a decent toilet/shower block.
