On the outskirts of a housing estate in Nethy Bridge a track leaves the main road and runs off into the woods. Not far along is a gate leading into someone’s property and in the grounds of that property lies the Lazy Duck camping ground.

The small camping area, accommodating a maximum of four tents, is under trees, bordered on two sides by the driveway to the house and on the other two sides by forest.

The owners’ thoughtful imagination has provided a wooden shelter for campers, with a shelf for cooking stoves, a large table, chairs, lanterns, books and a notice board.

A hammock is strung between two trees and a chimenea, with wood provided, just waits for visitors to sit round sociably on an assortment of log stools. From somewhere in the background floats the tinkle of wind chimes.

It has character; it’s quaint. That literate bird, L. Duck, has put his signature to numerous notices outlining rules and regulations and giving useful information. It’s very much his property and you are encouraged to help him keep it in tip-top condition. I’m sure he didn’t intend that I should sit looking nervously at my banana skin, wondering whether I would manage to put it into the correct bin out of the assortment of recycling facilities in the back of the garage, nor that I should worry that he might be watching from one of the house’s overlooking windows to ensure that I took only one bucketful of water for my shower.

And that brings me to the famous bush shower. This is a bag, hung between the trees, which is lowered on a pulley and filled with a bucketful of hot water. Raise it to a suitable height, turn on the shower head at the base, and there you go. Fence panels on three sides and a shower curtain on the fourth provide privacy from all ground-based observers. If you’re brave you can leave the curtain open and enjoy the view into the forest because, apparently, no one is ever there. Aye, maybe, but I wasn’t risking it! One bucketful of water is enough for a quick wash, but not really adequate for doing hair as well. It’s fun while the novelty lasts, but it would be a challenge to manage in the rain without getting clothes wet while changing.

Somewhere in the grounds is a sauna, but I wasn’t shown this. The toilet and washing up sink are located in the house itself. Enter through a back door into a utility area and rummage behind the row of coats on the right hand wall to find the light switch. Beside it is the garage containing recycling facilities and, further into the garage behind the bins, a computer with free internet access.

Across the driveway is the duck pond and a lawn where campers can sit on the bench and imitate the example of the lazy ducks.

There are a few points worth noting. Tents must be small, suitable for no more than three persons, so it is worth phoning to check if in doubt. Camping is sometimes relocated to the nearby lambing field to allow the area under the trees to recover. I pitched here in solitary splendour, behind a closed gate and surrounded by an electric fence, with the pretty little Soay sheep watching me through the fencing.

As a result, I didn’t make use of the camping ground facilities but made myself comfortable by the tent. The ground is quite stony, so bring suitable pegs. Arrival is from 4pm onwards, so plan your day accordingly. Departure is by 10am.

In conclusion, if you like the idea of being one of a small number of guests in what is, effectively, someone’s attractive back garden, you’ll enjoy the Lazy Duck. Those longing for wild open spaces, scenic views and anonymity may find it a touch claustrophobic.
