This surely ranks as one of the most beautiful locations we've stayed at - and there's some stiff competition in this part of the world. The tent pitches have been carved out of the side of the valley so everyone gets a view of the breathtaking mountain scenery. Also available are a couple of quite elegant shepherd's huts for those who prefer not to camp. Finding the camping area itself was a bit tricky due to the almost total absence of signs. After a process of trial and error and a three-point-turn in a farmyard, we finally found the camping field.
On arrival, we noted that the owners have been careful in the styling of shower/toilet blocks which are finished in cedar shingles which blend into the landscape very well. Unfortunately, the facilities don't actually work very well and were barely adequate for the number of people on site in busy periods. Both showers were very temperamental, alternating between tepid and scalding water - irritating for adults and possibly quite dangerous for children. Also, the floor of the unit was often very wet and felt like it was about to give way in places. Although very pretty, we felt the facilities showed signs of botched DIY construction and poor maintenance.
The site owners appeared to take a very laid back approach during our stay - we only saw them once during our four night break. There are few rules, no fixed pitches and campfires are allowed. In general, we're a big fan of the more hands-off style of management but when we were joined by a noisy group of youngsters on our last night, we were a little concerned. Fortunately, they new group were quiet after 9. 30pm so we had no real cause for complaint. However, we did get the feeling that 'anything goes', which may not suit everyone. The other downside was that cars are allowed in the camping field, which of course brings the additional noise and danger. Happily though, most of the other campers followed our lead and parked up down by the shower/toilet cabin, well away from the tents.
We felt that the pricing was a little steep, considering the very basic facilities. However, we could not fault the location which is simply stunning. If the owners improved the facilities - the showers in particular - this could be a near-perfect campsite.

Management response: Please note that as from 2018 we no longer have camping pitches. Glamping cabins only to rent from now on. |

Just spent a lovely night at Cwmllywi with the kids in the Bongo. There are fantastic views of the mountains and we enjoyed a fine sunset and circling kites. It was so quiet and peaceful, except for the lambs bleating and the owls at night. The kids enjoyed climbing trees and playing in the stream which is shallow enough to be safe for my 2. 5 year old.
The toilet block is beautifully quirky and was spotless. The two other cabins on site built by the owners for holiday lets looked intriguing and gave the whole place charm.
There was a good choice of pitches and the site is west-facing and fairly sheltered.
Love being able to have a small campfire also.
There is walking and cycling from the site, although a bit steep for the little ones Machynlleth offers some interesting shops and great fish and chips. There is also the osprey project, CAT, Aberdyfi and Cader Idris nearby. We like campsites which are relaxed and unspoilt and not crowded so this was perfect. You really feel like you are away from it all.
