We wanted to stay somewhere so we could visit the Cathar Castles, but the site I wanted at Alet les Bains was full for the night, so we came here instead.
Initially I was not impressed at all by the young receptionist, who insisted that my Camping card and driving licence were not good enough - I had to get my husband to get the 'Carte Gris' (vehicle registration doc) and his old paper driving licence to be photocopied! We only wanted one night, and she insisted on being paid then and there, despite the fact that I only had a 20 Euro note, which wasn't enough! She refused to wait till I had been to the nearest cash-point, so after much rummaging I managed to find enough change and we were shown to a pitch. She came with us to switch on the electric and then asked what time we would be leaving, as she then came round and switched it off again before we left! I think though, that she seemed very young and was taking her responsibilities very seriously.
The pitch we were shown to was next to an access point to the riverside woodland area, but was not very well shaded, which given that the heat was around 40' was not very nice. The river was lovely for our dog, and the walk was very nice, with lovely views of old houses and the hillside beyond. You can walk down beside a barrage and see the water cascading down the other side. Very pretty. At night someone came round and padlocked the gate shut so no-one could come onto the site from the river, but it had been opened again quite early, so I was able to take Toby for his morning walk/swim.
The loo block was very, very basic with a mixture of sitty-down loos and holes in the ground, but were clean enough. No loo paper of course. The shower was good enough. There are 2 small blocks, and the one nearer the main entrance has sinks with draining boards.
There is a really lovely municipal pool next to the site, and campers get a ticket for a reduced rate. This was not taken off us so I think you can use it throughout a prolonged stay. It also gave you a reduced rate for other municipal activities.
You can walk into Limoux along the riverside and up to the bridge, although we went by car the next morning as we needed to leave by 11! We went to the market and wandered over the old bridge, but we didn't have time for anything else such as the art gallery.
It was very cheap - 22 euros for the 4 of us - although I was a bit taken aback at having to pay extra to put up my daughter's tent.
At first I was very anti the site - the heat and the girl's adherence to red tape didn't help, but in the end I preferred it to the Val De Leth up the road in Alet le Bains, and of the 2 I would go back to Limoux.
