Peace, stunning mountain views and a warm welcome are what you'll get here. It's not about the facilities, which are basic. If you like to get away from it all or if you're a keen mountaineer then this is the best place to stay - the MacGillycuddy's Reeks are 2 miles away and offer amazing views - there is also the tranquility of Lough Acoose, which is just about visible from the campsite.
There is a standpipe at the corner of the field delivering fresh drinking water - there are some bits of vegetation in the water but it is perfectly clean and tastes fantastic. Eight of us drank it for two days and nobody had any problems at all.
A 30-second walk down to the farmhouse provides a clean outdoor toilet with washbasin. In the farmhouse itself, by prior arrangement, you can take a shower. Mrs Doona and her family are all very welcoming and the facilities are sparkling!
The Climbers Inn at Glencar (about 5 mins by car - 7km) is an excellent bar and also hosts a shop (expensive) for any urgent supplies. Kilorglin is a well-provisioned little place about twice as far in the opposite direction (pharmacy, shops, pubs etc).
There's probably room for no more than 5 pitches and there are various tables and benches scattered around the field - we had a pot-bellied stove for a fire/cooking and that was fine. As there is a decent screen of trees between the camping ground and farmhouse, noise is not a problem in either direction.
The field is pretty exposed on the side of a hill. However you are on the east side of the hill, protected from the prevailing westerly weather patterns so it probably wouldn't be too bad most of the time. The weather was glorious when we were there and it was a lovely place to be.
8Euros seemed to be a standard price per person during our trip to Eire - including showers. Seems expensive compared to UK campsites with these facilities but you can only compare like for like.
I would recommend this site for:
1 large party of up to 20 for total peace and isolation
Couples / families (with pets) if you're prepared to be at close quarters with your neighbours
I'll be returning at some point :-)
