I booked over the telephone as when I looked online it was unclear to me if it was just for tents or whether caravans were accepted. Some friends were also staying in a Bell tent at the same time. We telephoned to find out if there was somewhere nearby we could stop with the caravan in tow whilst waiting for our pitch, and were told that we could park up on site with no issues.

We arrived at the site at about 9am and there was loads of space to park the van. We could see the campers on our pitch packing away and were told as soon as they left we could pitch up. We went into the on site cafe and enjoyed breakfast rolls whilst we waited.

All the pitches were situated around the edge of the camping field with lots of space in the middle. The electric hook up pitches were on the front. They were very relaxed about how we pitched, which way we faced etc- as long as we were within our pitch - which was very large and was marked out by a knee high corral type fence.

Looking around the camping area there seemed to be a few groups of campers pitched together and some pitches seemed to have a lot of occupants - one tent pitch had 3 campervans all of which seemed to be occupied, and some groups had an event shelter in the middle of their tents.

We pitched facing the lake and had a great view of all the watersports from the caravan. All the electric pitches had a view. The toilet facilities were accessed via a code, and were a row of wet rooms each containing a sink, shower and toilet. They were well looked after and cleaned twice a day.

The showers were push button but good and hot, they did have curtains but positioned far enough away so that they didn't stick to you! There was a fold down seat and hooks for clothing, and a squeegee to clean up afterwards which most guests seemed to do.

The site itself was quite small with about 30 pitches on our field and a second field further along that didn't appear to have hook ups. During the day the site got busy with day visitors to the lake for watersports, but in the evening despite having a lot of groups of campers it was very quiet.

Unfortunately we'd taken paddleboards and as we are novices it was windy every day and so we only managed to launch them once during the week - at a cost of £8 per board for the day (no concessions for campers). (Turns out it's the windiest inland water in the SW - great for sailing and windsurfing but not so great for paddleboarding).

There were a lot of wind based water activities available to book but unfortunately when we tried to book they were booked up -so book in advance if you plan to stay there.

The cafe was lovely but had a very limited menu, breakfast items in a roll or on a plate, and salads with avocado and hummus, not great for teenagers who would rather have had a ham sandwich or a burger. Cakes were nice though and coffee was good.

The nearest shop was a grubby looking Spar shop a few miles away. We decided to head to the nearest Tesco in Redruth instead. We also found takeaways in Redruth that delivered - a pizza/kebab place and a Chinese which were very nice.

We tried the Golden Lion pub, the takeaways were the same price as the food to eat in. We ate in the wooden shack outside - the weather wasn't good enough to eat outside and it was very busy inside. The food was very good although not cheap.

We enjoyed our stay but our friends in the bell tent were not so impressed. Unfortunately as the weather was poor their cooking and eating areas were outside the tent, and inside the tent there was just room for a bed and their clothes, and in the day the airbeds for the children were lifted onto the double bed so they couldn't even use that comfortably.

They had no electric hook up just solar power for lighting and a phone charger. Thankfully we could all fit in our caravan and awning so they had somewhere to sit in the wet and windy weather, but they wouldn't book a bell tent again.

The site was clean, the walk around the lake was lovely. Dogs were to be kept on a lead at all times on the site and around the lake and were not allowed in the water as it was a reservoir.

There were no obvious dog bins on site although once you start to walk around the lake there were a few around.

If it hadn't been for the wet and windy weather our stay would have been much better, but I think we'd return to the site again.

We had a great stay. The site was nice and peaceful.

All of the facilities were very clean and all the necessary covid precautions in place, which made us feel comfortable using them.

The walk around the lake was great. The watersports looked fun but we didn't take part.
