Peaceful retreat in the New Forest. A 1. 5 acre field with an entrance that requires care but isn't particularly difficult. The site is clean, very tidy and we had it all to ourselves. It is very secluded, the only man made sounds being the very occasional car passing along the narrow lane below the site. Nature's sounds however abound. There is a forest stream that winds through the woods which just about surround the site, shallow over gravel with pools, music after rain. Birdsong galore, deer wandering pass while we set up, oblivious or uncaring of our presence. There is a drinking water tap. A waste disposal facility an appropriate distance from the drinking water with a wash out tap. There are 5 EHU and that's it. This was our first trip ever and we wanted somewhere quiet to practice and make the inevitable mistakes. We were the only van there for the whole week. It blew what felt like a hurricane the night we arrived but the field is in the valley and the trees and the high top of the forest edge gave ample protection. It rained enough that night to float the Ark but in the morning the ground was as well drained as the night before. Even the grass was dry. Driving away from the pitch there were no problems, firm ground and then on to the gravel track which runs the length of the site to service the grass only pitches. There is good secure rubbish set up and recycling box. I grew up on the edge of the forest and thought I knew every part of it but realized that there is so much more to explore. We now can't wait to go back and are looking forward to an Autumn visit. There is a very good farm shop within easy walking distance and the nearest pub perhaps less than a mile away. Do not listen to your sat nav once you are on the A338. Do not use Ibsley Drove as per our Garmin. It is a potholed, water filled testing ground for tanks, or so it felt. We went up there and despite having the largest of 4x4's we were seriously challenged. The Bailer Pegasus 462 coped well but the owner, Richard, does warn visitors not to rely on their sat nav. Listen to him. Use Lawrence or Mockbeggar Lanes, at least they are metaled, we found Lawrence the easiest.
