We changed our mind about where we were going at the very last minute last Summer and after some increasingly frantic calls to assorted sites in the Ardeche finally found a spot at Aloha Plage. The website was only in French, Dutch and German, so had to use my schoolgirl friend, and couldn't get anyone on the phone to speak English. Still, we decided to go.

The site is in a very good position at Sampzon on the curve of the river Ardeche. There is a good sized beach area to the site, and the river and beach area are in full sun for most of the day. There is plenty of space for sunbathing and swimming, and some 'rapids' for the kids to play with lilos in as well.

Acess to the site is reasonable, the road across the river onto the 'island' where the site is can be a little slow as it's one way with a traffic light control, but we were only ever held up for a few minutes. The site is next to the Bastide en Ardeche one and there are several others on the 'island' -it's not actually an island, but might as well be, the river goes all the way in almost a 360 arc, if you see what I mean!

There is a supermarket just outside the campsite that does essentials, but we used to drive to the bigger one at Ruoms for all but bread/croissants.

When we arrived at the site, we booked in (again, the receptionist had very little English) and then a chap came along with a golf buggy and took us through the site to choose our pitch. We had a choice of two, the one we picked was huge. There aren't hedges between them, so you do have to pick carefully.

There are two good sized loo blocks, and some are turkish style squatty loos. The showers are good, and free, and cleaned regularly. There is also a children's shower/loo section with smaller toilets.

The EHU is rather antiquated, we needed an extension cable and the cables were trailed all over the site. We had regular power outages when switches were tripped but they were reset fairly quickly. There are water points at regular intervals.

There is a bar and cafe, but we didn't really use these so can't comment. The site held regular events at the bar and also boules tournaments and BBQs and so on, but the noise wasn't too intrusive and finished by about midnight.

The pool is fairly small but clean, not too warm though. There are plenty of sunbeds. There is a decent sized children's playground.

We were the only English on the site for the majority of our stay. There were a number of dutch, but the site was predominantly French, and caters for a lot of bikers. In fact, whilst we were there they were preparing for a Harley Davidson something or other, I've never seen so much black leather in my life! They were very pleasant though, and we had no issues.

To sum up, this was a pleasant site. We'd probably not return, mainly because we like to have a few other Brits to speak to, and it was a little isolating being the ONLY English people, but it wasn't at all a horrible site and was much more reasonably priced than other sites in the area and is in a lovely location on the river.
