Please note we have been advised that the campsite at this location has closed, and no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches. The pub itself remains open

If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks

I wrote two reviews about The Golden Lion and it's paddock campsite a few years ago - Then it was excellent and the owners were the perfect hosts.

That has all changed now the pub and campsite are under new ownership.

I know I'm not allowed to write any personal stuff about folks, but suffice to write the site fees have gone up 100%. (One tap) There is now a four dog compound where people camp. The occupiers of which yapped and howled during the day and night - not much but enough to be annoying.

Having paid over £120 for campsite fees, our group were completely ignored when these dogs were exercised in the camping area on the morning of our departure. During our stay one of our group had dog muck carried into their motor-home on the soles of their sandals. I'm not pointing the finger, but.

I could write more negatives, but it would only be censored.

There needs to be a major re-think at this campsite and get rid of the superior attitude - It doesn't work!

Suffice to write our group will not be returning. There are plenty of other, more hospitable pub campsites near by.

I've given 9 out of 10 for site location, because it is a great view.

But that's all that can be said now in the way of positives!

Welcoming pub with a log fire, the owners are very friendly and the food excellent, several different walks can be made from the campsite - the main one being up Moel Famau. Water was the only facility although I think you can use the pub toilets and we stayed on the car park for hardstanding. Please note the pub is closed on Mondays. We will definitely be staying here again for a few more nights in the summer.

I wrote we would return, and here I am writing another review just a month after the first, such is the pull of this place.

We went on the Bus Route 76 Beer festival and this pub was on the route, not that we needed an excuse to return to The Golden Lion!

Not much that can be added to my previous review to try and get you to stay here, except fellow campers who ate at the pub said the food was great and at a good price.

I can't emphasise just how friendly and accommodating the pub owners are. Two top notch people.

The owner said they were thinking of adding basic toilets to the site in the future. Don't get too posh mate, the site will get too popular. Let's keep it simple - and just for me and my wife!

What sort of words to use for this small campsite? Gorgeous, a gem, magic, spot-on, friendly. Take your pick, any will do!

My wife and I have just spent two nights staying here. Wish it had been more. We will return asap!

The nicely mown large, secure, gently sloping paddock is tucked well away behind and slightly above the small pub car park. The only facilities are a single tap and a bin. Please don't let this put you off going, it really is a gorgeous spot, but obviously go prepared to be self sufficient. Although the pub toilets can be used during opening hours.

Take my advise, before you pitch up, just take a look around. The Vale of Clwyd stretches across in the front and turn around and you have The Clwydian Range behind, great walking country. We just couldn't help just smiling at each other! Perfect.

I rate The Golden Lion Pub in the little hamlet of Llangynhafal one of the best I've been in. A real pub serving real ale - Try the Buzzard Bitter which is made down the road in a micro brewery, probably the best pint I've ever tasted!

Can't comment about the food, as we had all we required in the camper, but reading the other review it sounds great, and the pub owners couldn't be more friendly.

The hamlet is close by, and mid way between, the interesting market towns of Ruthin and Denbigh, N. Wales. The site is out of the way down quiet country lanes, but is easily accessible, because a little bus stops right by the pub, so either town is within easy reach without having to up sticks to go shopping ect.

To sum up, yes it only has a tap in the paddock, but that is a small price to pay for the great experience this place has to offer. Forget your T. V's and all such things, turn up and just soak in the surroundings and the ale!

Oh yes, forgot to mention the price. £5 p/n, all in! If that doesn't get you to this hideaway, now't will!

In rating this site, we have given the site facilities 6/10. Some might think this high for a tap and bin, but it's our kind of site. So we ain't going lower. We gave the child friendliness 8/10 because there is nothing for them to do except charge around in the paddock and walk the local paths - isn't that what children should do anyway? So although our own are married and long gone, the pub owners were so friendly, that we felt sure your own little darlings will be well received, but be prepared to amuse them yourselves!

Our personal overall rating, despite the lack of facilities is still 10/10 because we loved everything about The Golden Lion and it's campsite.

Can’t believe this site doesn't already have dozens of reviews – it’s a real gem.

We stayed here in our motorhome on 25th and 26th Dec (due to needing to ‘postpone’ our Christmas until 28th Dec – long story!). The Golden Lion is located in a delightful little hamlet, the car park and campsite being set back from a very quiet country road so we had two very peaceful nights’ sleep.

We walked from the pub up to Offa’s Dyke and Moel Llys-y-Coed (a 2. 5 hour walk classified as strenuous) wonderful views westwards across the Vale of Clwyd, stretching all the way over to Snowdon and eastwards to the Wirral.

On our second evening we ate and drank in the Golden Lion and we were VERY impressed. Home made steak and ale pie and pudding to die for and the crispiest chips we've EVER tasted. No idea how they conjured up such delicious food on Boxing Day. We then spent a couple of hours in the public bar, planning to relax in front of the open fire but we started chatting with the owners and a couple of regulars and that’s how we spent the whole, very pleasant evening. They serve Madoc Ales and an extensive selection of single malts.

PS. We stayed in the car-park and got our water from the camping paddock. We needed to be self sufficient as the only facility available on our visit was a fresh water tap.
