 This was our first visit to Petit Dauphin in Les Mathes and what a pleasant surprise it was. Looking on Google Earth there appears to be an amusement park right ext door with a couple of roller coaster rides looming above the fence. However these have screens on the side facing the campsite and riders can not see over them. Also at the time we visited the park was closed, only opening for July and August.
Had a lovely warm welcome from the son of the owners, despite my poor French. We were offered a walk round and looked at various pitches, all flat, some with no shade, some with either morning or afternoon shade and some with shade all day. We opted for a no shade one but when we come next time will opt for a full shade one as we fried in the heat.
The swimming pool is heated and covered on colder days, no supervision but really not a problem. The showers and toilet block were kept spotless, There are laundry facilities including a washing machine and good old fashioned clothes lines for drying.
Electricity is at 6amps, plenty of stand pipes for drinking water, fresh bread and pastries can be ordered at the bar for the following morning.
There is a small you supermarket in Les Mathes itself (Utilie) and a small Carrefour in the centre of LA Palmyre. A bit furtner afield the is a Super you at La Tremblade with petrol station.
Beaches, the beach nearest is Plage de la Bouverie, it's large, very large. About a ten minute drive away, there is a large car park and a short walk down past the lifeguard station. Turn right for the naturist part and left for the textile part. You could walk all the way into La Palmyre along this beach if you so wished, but it would take a while!
Our advice is to either take bikes or hire them from the hire shop just down the road. It's flat round here. We took ebikes and found them ideal for local shopping and sight seeing as there are many cycle paths criss crossing the area.
Finally this site is also in the ACSI book, so the low season price is very good.
