Please note we have been advised that this campsite has closed, and no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches, it is now a residential site. If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks

This upside to this site is that it was very clean and well maintained. The toilet and shower block were spotless no matter what time of day you went in. It was a nice peaceful site which was great as we have 2 small children.
The downsides to this site was that the touring caravan pitches were on quite a steep slope and very difficult to manoeuvre the van into due to lack of space (we weren't the only ones to moan about this. ) Although the site did provide levelling blocks we needed 3 breeze blocks under our a frame if that gives you some indication of the steepness. Therefore the caravan was level but the ground in the awning wasn't very practical as was too sloped. The waste bins were always overflowing.
Also the walk into town was more like 25 minutes and all uphill on the way back not very good for pushchairs and small children. The family bathroom was a great idea but you had to get a key from reception and reception was only open til 5pm. Therefore if you hadn't thought earlier in the day that you were going to bath the kids then you couldn't (mine hate showers!). Also the walk to reception was a fair trek from the touring pitches.
Another thing was that you weren't allowed to park your car within your caravan pitch but we were allowed to park it in a designated space (i. E a bit of spare ground) approximately 20 steps from our van. Didn't make much sense to us but hey rules are rules. On the whole we did have a lovely time in Swanage and would go back again but probably not to this site.

We've stayed here twice, both out of season in May, because it's so convenient for the town with excellent fish and chip places, beaches, buses and coastal walks. Good clean facilities, quiet location at the end of a cul-de-sac, through houses, well sign-posted from the town.

We have been coming to this site every Whitsun Bank holiday for at least 7 years. It is a nice quiet site, with very clean shower block, and a covered area for dishwashing. The Purbeck hills surround the site, so the views are lovely, you can hear the Swanage Railway steam trains in the distance. You are walking distance from the town and beach, but we often drive nearer to the beach and park up in a side road, as we take loads of stuff for a day on the beach! Like somebody else who reviewed this site said, I wouldn't want to tell too many people about it as it is a nice peaceful tucked away site. There is sometimes some rowdy noises in the distance in the evenings. But Cauldron Barn has the quietness that we like, so hope to visit for many more years to come.

I would like to heartily recommend this site, myself and my two boys (1 adult, 1 aged 4) visited it for two weeks during July. We found it to be in a good location as it is easy to walk into the centre of Swanage and the beach. We have a big 6 man dome tent and found the pitch to be a nice size ( saying that we had booked and it was one of the two larger ones) with a nice area at the side for our cooker. Toilet and shower facilities were kept immaculately clean and they were free. Washing up facilities were also kept spotless, site for tents is quite a small area but not many have very good views from your pitch and none have sea views. It was very quiet in the evenings and a very safe area for our little man to play in. We will definitely be visiting again this year.

Myself and a friend went to this campsite for a few days mid-week. We specifically chose it because of its location and the fact that the beach is only a 10 min walk away. We were certainly not disappointed! It is a lovely campsite with separate area for tents. The pitches are quite close together and you can hear everything that is going on but it wasn't a problem as everybody was fairly quiet despite it being school holidays and there being lots of children around. There is a large field that was good for laying in the shade and reading a book or having a siesta. The showers and toilets were very clean. My only criticism would be that there is no temperature gauge on the showers which meant that the water was often very hot. Not so good if you are suffering from sunburn! Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this campsite and would definitely return.

My partner and I had a pleasant 5 day stay at this site, just a few weeks shy of the school summer holidays. Cauldron Barn is handy for the lovely beach at Swanage. You can walk (about 15 minutes) or drive if you have a lot in tow. The site has a designated terraced area for around 20 tents and, yes, quarters are very close indeed. Bring ear plugs because you will hear every whisper and snore! Never the less, the extended families, couples and small groups of friends that pitched around us were friendly and reasonably quiet- a fair number of Europeans too. Yes, the bathrooms are super clean and not over crowded. Beside the reception area there was a rec room with pool table , ping pong, and flat screen t.v. But with the beauty of the Isle of Purbeck at our feet, we didn't use. All in all this site makes a good choice if you want to be" in town". Not ideal if you want to be alone!

July 2005 The touring pitches at this site are on different terraces all of which are on a slope so it makes for interesting dining/sleeping arrangements. They do try to get at least 3 tents on each terrace so it can feel somewhat crowded & if you are the end tent (as we were) you do have to negotiate the other tent's guyropes to get to the toilets.
The toilets & showers are nice & clean (cleaned at least twice daily). The water in the showers is plentiful & nice & hot. They have a number keypad to gain entry to these facilities so children have to be accompanied unless they are about 4 foot tall. They also have a disabled toilet & mini shower/bath which you can adjust the temperature for, so we found it especially useful for our 3yr old daughter.
There is a tiny children's play area but we found it unsafe for our child as the equipment is aimed at older children, but it is surrounded by a large sloping field which we used to play football/frisbee on.
You are not allowed to park your cars next to your tents here so we did have problems finding a space at peak times ie weekends. This also caused us a problem when we came to reload the car as another tent was pitched on our level nearest the road so we had to take all our equipment down 1 level before we could pack the car.
The beach & Swanage town are only a 10-15 minute walk away although there is a small shop & laundrette on site. All in all we had a good time & may even return again.

June 2005 I'm almost loathe to give a review on this site because it is a little non-commercial gem (and only I and a few others know about it....ahem) set at the top end of a housing estate but with magnificent panoramic views of the hills and countryside beyond.
Literally 5 minutes walk to Swanage seafront, turn right and another 5 minutes walk into town...or turn left and another 5 minute walk brings you to the Crows Nest Inn and restaurant - very nice food and house doubles at £2.00.
The site is clean and well kept. Fairly flat terraces for tents or hardstandings for caravans/motorhomes - most with electric hook up. Very reasonably priced. Toilet block likewise with everything one needs and it all works!
Just one niggle - the ground under the turf can be a little rocky and good tent pegs and a heavy hammer is required in places.
