Two years ago, my wife and I spent two most enjoyable weeks at this site in our touring caravan.
Having sold our caravan last year, we and another elderly couple decided to try a week in a mobile home, just to see whether we would enjoy the site as much as we had done in our tourer. WHAT A MISTAKE THAT WAS!
We had booked a 33 sq. Metre mobile home which had two bedrooms and two en suite bathrooms. Being in our late sixties and mid seventies, we wanted our own facilities and thought this would be ideal.
My wife and I were looking forward to meeting the site owners again after two years, who were lovely people (see my review from our visit in 2017), but sadly, the site is now under new management, who turned out to be the worst element of our holiday.
On arrival we checked in at reception and were issued with a key to the mobile home and shown a plan of the site. We had to leave a credit card as deposit against any damage or breakages. We were told this would be returned on departure at the end of our stay.
This was the last week before the site closed for the end of the season. However, our first disappointment was to find that none of the on site facilities were open. The shop was shut, as were the bar and the cafe, and to our astonishment, the washing machine in the laundry area had been removed, leaving just the plumbing! The office was closed most of the time.
Despite this being their last week before closing for the season, surely if the site was open for bookings, then so should have all the facilities been.
Our next disappointment was with the mobile home. This was a self catering type of holiday. The only cooking facilities were a hob and a microwave. How anyone could be expected to be able to cook or warm anything up was ridiculous.
The decking on the verandah was dangerous, as most of the timbers were pretty well rotten and needed replacing. A couple of the decking pieces had been replaced, but the rest really should not have been left in that condition.
However, despite everything, we were determined to enjoy our holiday as the countryside in and around Saint Astier us lovely, as is the whole of France and in particular, the Dordogne region.
The week passed without incident, and on our day of departure we cleaned the mobile home throughout. We had bought cleaning materials as none were provided, save for a brush and dustpan, no mop, no cleaning cloths – NOTHING!
At the pre-agreed time, the woman owner came to carry out her inspection. Unfortunately we had inadvertently left a mattress covers on the two beds in one of the bedrooms and had missed a couple of leaves on the floor when sweeping up. She said it wasn’t good enough and she would return in 20 minutes.
Twenty minutes later, her partner arrived to carry out the inspection. During the intervening forty five minutes we had cleared the covers and re-swept and mopped the floors, with a makeshift mop. Prior to this we had bought kitchen and bathroom cleaners and had cleaned everywhere
THE PLACE WAS BY NOW CLEANER THAN ON THE DAY WE ARRIVED!
And so the second inspection was carried out by this obnoxious, odious little man, who said the place was “filthy”, and he would not be returning our credit card deposit and would be charging 152 Euros to clean the place.
He said it wasn’t clean enough and the windows were filthy! We had been there for six days!
He also asked why only I had done the extra cleaning when there were four of us. Our party consisted of my wife who is disabled, cannot walk and is in a wheelchair, and the other two are in their seventies. I was the fittest if the group and took the task on.
We are elderly couples, clean and house proud people. We aren’t a bunch of hooligans or drunkards. We had never been so insulted. The man was an absolute disgrace and was extremely disrespectful.
The charging if 152 Euros is quite clearly a way of subsidising this couples income, taking advantage of elderly people and probably other groups too!
I would suggest that the way this establishment is managed is at best dishonest and possibly fraudulent. These two ought to be disqualified from running any kind of business.
BY THE WAY. THERE TOILET ROLLS WEREN’T PROVIDED ON OUR ARRIVAL EITHER …. AND GUESS WHAT, WE WON’T BE RETURNING!

Reviewers-mature couple with campervan and bikes.
We chose this site from the ACSI book, then we would be sure of them being open. Our experience there was spoiled somewhat by the heavy rain they had had, and the continuing showers.
We found the site easily, it is on a riverside opposite the small town. The site has a woodland setting, with chalets as well as touring pitches.
The check in was quick and easy, we were given a map of the site, and some pitches were suggested, as the rain had left a lot of the pitches soggy. We chose an open area where the pitches were undivided. Others seemed to have dividing hedges.
There are 2 sanitary blocks marked on the map, 1 was closed, so we used the one behind the reception. There were separate areas of enclosed basins for men and women, each with washing up and laundry sinks in. The water was not very warm in the men's but the women's was hotter.
The showers were in another open area, just under cover. The toilets were unisex round the corner in the smallest facility I have ever seen. The toilets were fairly clean, but the showers and basins were full of dead leaves, and had obviously not been cleaned for some time. Also, the lights were on timers which switched them off too soon and left you in the dark.
The pool and cafe/bar were closed, and we didn't venture any further into the campsite to check out any other facilities.
The town is across the bridge, it was market day when we were there, but the rain didn't encourage us to linger. The attractions of the Dordogne are on the doorstep.
This is probably a very nice site in season, the location is good, and with the river and trees would be very attractive, but we were glad to move on the next day.
