The site owner is extremely welcoming and all the staff work hard to keep showers toilets etc clean. The view over the beach to check out if the waves are good is amazing and feeds the soul.
This site can be described as basic but is one of my favourite places ever. There is a lovely walk around the headland and over the cliff from the campsite, the Tarka trail for cycling is just a short drive away at Braunton and Croyde Bay is has a lovely selection of small shops to get bits and bobs.
When we stayed a Sri Lanka pop up restaurant and a Michelin starred restaurant on a double decker bus came to the field infront of the campsite which was just wonderful. There was also a market in the field the next morning.

Stayed for three nights with daughter and 6 year old grandson. The field overlooks the beach and slopes but it levels out at the very top and bottom. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There are a few rules but it is a relaxing atmosphere.
The loos and showers are good and kept clean and you don't have to queue. Plenty of loo rolls and washing up liquid and scourers at the washing up post - double drainer so plenty of room.
We could pitch the tent where we wanted. Children are welcome here but there are no play facilities and entertain themselves with games they have brought with them. This is a plus point. The location is superb only 2 minute walk to the beach. There is a pub and restaurant in village. This is a 10 minute walk.
The Stores is a superb delicatessan which sells great wine, beer and cider and the yummiest banana cake you will ever eat. There are street pizza ovens on their forecourt and these are made to order and fabulous. We will be visiting again.
Try the surf school - Surf South West - great coaches - my 6 year old grandson was standing on surf board within an hour. It would be worth checking when they have beer and music festivals on if you are interested in a bit more entertainment.
All in all perfect campsite and perfect holiday.

We actively seek beach side campsites with the minimum of facilities, this one ticks all the boxes
Pre-booked and then rang and added an extra day, all a very simple process
You can pay on arrival in cash or by cheque and choose where to pitch, we chose a flat section to the right of the entrance with a good (but not the best) sea view but we wanted as flat a section as possible with our large 8-man Gelert Horizon and porch combo!
We booked four and stayed five nights, 5 mins walk to beach, straight into the surf, perfect position. A few facilities have popped up at this end of the village, there is a coffee and pasty van at the roadside car park at the bottom of the the lane and a market in the next field on Tuesdays and Sundays.
15 mins walk to village for pubs and most simple groceries / pasties.
Freshwell has plenty of clean showers and a wash up facility, we like basic and at £10 per adult and £5 per kid per night, our family of five had five nights of surf and sunshine for £175 - beat that!
Thanks to the owner and his low key but hands-on presence this is a well run site with a few sensible rules, stunning views and plenty of scope for exploring N Devon on your doorstep
Note, if you pitch in the middle of the site and get any high winds (it will always be fairly windy, it's exposed to the coast) your kit will be at risk, 4 lads had their Coleman event shelter wrecked by winds, so seek shelter with large units / awnings if you have them
I cant fault much, I suppose hot water for washing up would be nice, but that's the kids job and inventive children will find hot water in the showers. Sshhhhh

If all you are after is a peaceful, well-run, basic campsite with quick access to Croyde Bay beach then this fits the bill perfectly. There's no noise allowed at night, no big groups and the owner sleeps on site to ensure this happens and in case of emergency.
It is just a big, slightly sloping (variable) field with bought-in portakabin style toilet and shower blocks which are clean and well maintained. Other than the loos and showers there are no other facilities - no shop, or playground, no electric hook-ups.
The owner provides bricks for portable BBQs and recycling facilities. The site is accessed via a hard-core track through a lower field where there's a really good market every Tuesday. 250-300m and you are on the beach which is one of the best for surfing in Britain and has RNLI Lifeguard supervision.
It's a good 10minute walk into Croyde where there are lots of surf shops and good pubs but not so great for buying food to eat back at the tent. If you decide to drive to Braunton for food there is a Co-op supermarket and many more shops than Croyde.
60 tents max means there's plenty of room even in high season. A farm lane and hedges separate it from the Ruda site where the tents were absolutely rammed in without even space to walk between!
It's entrance is 50 m closer to the beach, and someone said they get free wifi but the cost is higher. You pay your money.
