This was our first visit to Italy and the first overseas trip with a caravan. Friends had visited Fontanelle last year and recommended the site.
Camping Fontanelle was easy to find even if our satnav did direct us down the very narrowest of passages! Entrance to the site is very narrow due to parked cars and if another unit is booking in at reception there is nowhere to pull over out of the way of other traffic. Booking in itself was easy and friendly.
Thankfully an earlier review had advised the need for levelling blocks as the site is indeed terraced. It took our motor mover and the assistance of other helpful campers to site the van appropriately. The pitch wasn't huge but we could get the awning and the car on with just a thin strip in front of the awning for sunbathing. We were already aware that Italian sites are rather cramped and this was no exception, there was very little space between pitches but it wasn't a problem.
We had selected a 'Comfort Pitch' with water and electricity. We would have had waste drainage but the drain was uphill from the van. We had a view of Lake Garda even though we were not lakeside. The site does offer direct access to the lakeside and there is a pleasant promenade along which to stroll.
The on site facilities were very good. The restaurant/bar was excellent. The menu was fulsome and the food superb with fantastic views over the Lake. We used it both for full meals, as a bar and even for just a pudding after having one of the takeaway pizzas at the van. The staff were very friendly. It was possibly the best campsite restaurant we have ever used.
The on site supermarket met all our needs and the proprietor was very friendly too. The shower block was good with unlimited hot water in the showers (no timer buttons). Everything is kept very clean. Be aware that the toilet cubicles do not have toilet paper. You have to assess your needs in advance and pull some off the big reel in the entrance! I used the washing machines twice which was helpful.
We are not big users of swimming pools but we did use this one a couple of times. It is a simple pool but surrounded by plenty of free sunbeds. Unfortunately we had 3 fierce thunderstorms and 3 subsequent days of rain which lowered the temperature of the pool. Also when it rains, it is torrential and the final storm caused a mass leaching of mud and gravel down the roads on the site and into the pool which subsequently had to be drained, cleaned and refilled which meant it was unavailable for 2 or 3 days. To this end it would be advisable to take appropriate ground covering for tents and awnings to cope with the muddy aftermath of these storms.
The site offers free wifi but reception could only be obtained at Reception and even then it was extremely patchy. The management are aware that the massively increased use of tablets, mobile phones, ipads etc right across the site is seriously inhibiting availability and they have ordered an upgrade but it won't be available until next summer.
Fontanelle is well placed to explore the surrounding areas which are very scenic indeed. Trips across and around the Lake are available as are trips further afield - Venice, Verona and Milan. We stayed fairly local enjoying the delights of Riva, Sirmione and Garda, all of which were gorgeous.
All in all we were very happy with Camping Fontanelle.

Great location with access to lake guarda, you can walk up and down the lakeside and grab an aperol spritz or two (must try this drink in Italy!). Campsite facilities good, great pizzeria, good mini supermarket and toilets etc clean. Swimming pool small and simple but popular. As with all Italian sites they close for a siesta (annoyingly!) so you can not swim at this time. He area is stunning and you can catch a ferry to sirmione for the day.
We found our pitch very cramped but I imagine most are in this holiday hotspot?! Quiet at night too.
Tip - if you need to hire a car book well before the whole area had none for weeks!

This quiet, relaxed and friendly site is located on the western shore of Lake Garda, with direct access to the beach (pebbles) for sunbathing, swimming and small boat launching. The ACSI Discount Card is accepted off-peak in 2012 for 'standard' pitches only, and as a result early arrival is recommended if you wish to take advantage of this.
English is spoken in the Reception, Shop, Bar and Restaurant/Pizzeria, and staff were always helpful and pleasant. Payment for your stay must be made the day before you wish to leave; credit cards are accepted. Wifi is available.
Toilets and showers are separately accessed, and are kept spotless, being thoroughly cleaned at least every day. Washer/dryer machines are available at extra cost. There is a Chemical Emptying Point.
Pitches are set on terraces on the hillside going up from the lakeside in what used to be an Olive grove; most are sloping and levelling blocks will be necessary. Few pitches have a lake view due to the mature trees, although most therefore have shade. There are pitches on the lakeside at extra cost; there is a fence for the safety of small children. All pitches have Electricity points nearby, and 'serviced' pitches (extra cost) have water as well. Like many Italian sites, pitch size can be a little smaller than in UK. There is a Motorhome Service Point.
There is a very clean Swimming Pool (included) and a children's Paddling Pool on site, and a children's playground.
The well-stocked on-site shop has most daily requirements. The Restaurant serves good food, especially freshly made and cooked Pizza, at very reasonable prices. The Town Centre shops are about 1km away; the Supermarket about 2km.
From the end of the site beach there is a good, level concrete footpath along the lake shore for almost two miles, passing in five hundred yards the 'port', where Lake ferry services call. Coach tours are organized from the site to Verona and Venice, and rail services go from Desenzano and Peschiera. The site is well placed for tours northward to Salo, Gardone Riviera, and the spectacular Tignale coast. Nearby Sirmione is well worth a visit.
To reach the site, leave the A4 Autostrada at Desenzano and follow the P572 signed to Salo. On reaching the first roundabout in Moniga del Garda, pick up and follow the brown signs for Camping Fontanelle.
