This is a relatively small site right by the lake (although there are no views of the lake) with a fair number of cabins. We stayed when conditions were less than perfect for camping - cold nights, thunderstorms and rain and frequently overcast. Unfortunately, as with most Italian campsites, the site is designed for hot weather, with lots of shade and open toilet/shower blocks, neither of which were ideal. This aside, it was generally a good site. We went for a medium sized pitch as our tent is very long, and this was a good size and we were able to choose our pitch from a number available (second week in September). Every pitch has a hookup and WiFi was free and worked well.

Toilet and shower blocks were separate and the shower cubicles were spacious, extremely clean and with plenty of hot water, but sadly unheated.

We enjoyed a takeaway pizza, which was good value and there was a wide selection, but little other food available for takeaway. The bar/restaurant looked ok but a bit basic and not quite inviting enough for us to use, given that the weather was inclement so we couldn't sit outside. Instead we walked along the lakeside and found a superb restaurant (Europa) in a fantastic setting. Really good service and outstanding seafood.

The surroundings were beautiful and we enjoyed walking and exploring Caldonazzo, Calceranica and Levico Therme. However, even at the start of September many shops and bars had closed for the season. The campsite shop was very basic (although very cheerfully staffed), just about ok for fresh bread, milk and cold beers but not a lot else. There were small local supermarkets but nothing very exciting, which was a bit disappointing as we prefer not to use the car once we have arrived at a site. We bought a walking/cycling map from reception (4 euros) which was helpful, although as always the paths were quite tricky to follow.

The pool was lovely although not open every day because of the poor weather, which we were disappointed by as we do like to swim regardless. It was quite small, however, and I suspect that had the site been full it would have been heaving.

In the end we avoided the train to Venice as it would have been nearly three hours each way, although we may try it if we return to the area.

In better weather conditions, this site would have been ideal.

Date of Visit: June 2012 Unit:  Touring Caravan

This Site is beautifully situated within 30 metres of the Lake across the road, and surrounded by mountains. The beach (pebbles) is public.

Reception is very friendly and efficient, and English is spoken there, in the shop and in the bar/pizzeria/restaurant. The ACSI Discount Card is accepted at 16euro to 8 July and from 26 August 2012. It is only valid for 'smaller' pitches (no problem for us), but can be upgraded by paying the difference between the Full Price figures, instead of having to pay the full price. Bear in mind that in Italy, most pitches are smaller than in UK. On arrival you are handed a Welcome Pack, in English, giving details of local supermarkets, shops, garages, Market Days in local villages, etc.

In late June the site was almost full, so an early arrival will be an advantage.

The two toilet blocks are kept very clean, being steam-cleaned every day. Showers and toilets are separate. There are separate men's and women's facilities, and a cheerfully decorated Children's Bathroom. Clothes washing and washing-up basins have hot water. There is a Chemical Disposal Point. Washing machines and Dryers are available at extra cost.

All pitches are reasonably level and most have some shade. There is a Motorhome Service Bay. Wifi is available.

The outdoor Swimming Pool and paddling pool are very attractively presented, and in high season a lifeguard is present. Also in high season, there is children's entertainment. There is a small Children's Playground close by both Pool and Bar, Volleyball, and space for ball games.

Meals in the Restaurant/Pizzeria are reasonably priced, and the Terrace, alongside the Pool and with superb mountain views, is a very attractive place to eat. The shop is quite small with a limited choice.

Access to the Lakeside here is public, and it is possible to walk along the shore to the next village of Calceranica (in fact it's nearer than Caldonazzo). Caldonazzo is the larger, and is attractive, with plentiful parking.

Mountain Walking and Biking are very popular, and the area abounds with signposted routes. Access to the mountains is easy. There are also cycleways along the valley and round the lake for the less energetic! It is possible to visit Venice and other places by rail from the local Station 1 mile away.

Set in among the mountains of Trentino, Lake Caldonazzo is almost unknown in the UK; we certainly hadn't heard of it. It is simply beautiful, peaceful and welcoming, and not overcrowded. It is very easily accessed from the Brenner Autostrada at Trento, and being higher has cooler nights than, say, the Adriatic Coast (and no mosquitoes).
