 If you like small unsophisticated sites, La Capelle may suit you. The camping site slopes down through a pleasant lightly wooded area, with spacious pitches set out in clearings among the trees. Seemingly, the lower part of the site is prone to water-loggging / flooding at times of heavy rain and motor homes are advised to use the pitches at the upper level.
You can exercise your French skills chatting to Jacques Sabatte, the owner/manager, who is always busy around the site keeping everything spic and span. You can order your morning bread from him, and in the evening you can order a cassoulet and other food items, delivered to your pitch.
For tent campers there is a marquee shelter with picnic tables in case it should be poor weather - (it was 36 C when we were there). Toilets, showers, washing up facilities are excellent and were adequate in number even when the site was busy. BYO toilet paper!
The site is just 3. 5 km from Canal du Midi, ideal for cycling/walking outings. We cycled from the site and on through Castelnaudary, which is a lot prettier from the canal side than from the road! Carcassonne is about 40km and is of course a must see!
The Cité is truly spectacular, though as you will expect, there are plenty of shops and restaurants to tempt tourists.
There is a Géant Casino hypermarket in Castenaudary, about 5km from the site. The fuel station is not caravan friendly though.
There is one negative point about the site. Although out of sight, there is a very large tile factory just over the hill. Especially at night there is a noticeable level of noise from the plant, plus vehicle noises. This stopped while we there in mid-July, as we presume the plant closed for the annual holiday.
