Our second visit to Cauterets and Camping GR10. Our opinion hasn't changed, in that we still consider it is one the nicest sites we have used anywhere (and we have used a lot - see my 60-odd other reviews). In July 2013 Cauterets and the whole of the valley down to Lourdes and beyond was hit by a devastating flood. The only road into Cauterets was destroyed, along with several houses, and camping places near the river. GR10 was however untouched. Where the road was previously fairly level along the river, the reconstructed road now climbs very steeply in a number of wide hairpins up to the town, the new bit ending quite close to Camping GR10. Since our previous visit, the main toilet block has had a makeover and is now even smarter than before. The via ferrata (recommended) and Acro-kid are still there on site, but we didn't use them this year. Maybe we are getting old and timid, because this year we chose to walk down from Crete de Lys at 2200m to the town at 900m rather than cycle. Still tiring though! Of the numerous hikes from Pont D'Espargne, we like the Val de Marcadau the best, super scenery and not too demanding on our old legs!

Camping GR10 is undoubtedly one of the best sites we have used in Europe! It is fairly small - about 50 pitches - laid out on a slightly sloping grassed area with plenty of open space.

It is immaculately kept, with the grass neatly mown and everything kept tidy. There are two toilet blocks, one enclosed and heated in cooler months, and a small more basic one on the higher field.

Toilet paper on BYO basis. Electricity, unusually for France, is a quite generous 8 amps. There is a small playground with table-tennis, trampoline etc, and a boules area.

Reception staff are of course very friendly and helpful. Check opening dates on website - season seeems short. Views in every direction are amazing as the site sits in the narrow valley leading to Cauterets and Pont d’Espagne.

Although the road is close-by there is little or no road noise - but beware turning out of the site as the exit has a nasty blind-spot, only partly eased by a mirror on the opposite side. A few hundred metres up the road is a small Carrefour and service station, while the pleasant town of Cauterets is 3 or 4 km further.

The road from Lourdes to Cautertets is very easy even with a large caravan (easier than the Luz St Saveur road), and when you get there you will find the town almost exclusively French, which is a refreshing change from all those places in France teeming with Brits!

On the site there is an adventure activity shop where canyoning, rafting and via ferrata can be organised. The Via Ferrata is in fact on the mountain-side a hundred or two metres up the walking path from the site. You can watch the climbers from the comfort of your pitch with a pair of binoculars.

We spent an exhilarating few hours doing the ‘blue’ route (don’t be deceived into thinking blue means easy-peasy!) with the assistance of an instructor. There are a couple of short overhangs to stretch your muscles, and plenty of vertical exposure! The five zip-wires (Tyroleans) on the route are fun!

Cost Euros 60 for two of us, would be less without an instructor. On-site also is an ‘accrobranche’ specifically for kids - all the usual challenges, but only a couple of metres from the ground. There are of course many walking possibilities in the area at all levels of challenge, mostly starting from Pont d’Espagne. (In itself a spectacular sight).

Our favourite was the hike along the Marcadau valley to Wallon Refuge. This is not very challenging, as the path is mostly very easy going up a series of ‘steps’ each leading to a further stretch of beautiful meadows along the river.

This walk can be extended into more challenging routes. For VTT enthusiasts there is the possibility to take your bikes up from Cauterets on the gondala and then chair-lift to Crete du Lys. After you have taken in the fabulous views from there, depending on your skill and bravery, you can hurtle from 2303 metres down to 930 metres down runs graded blue, red or black.

There are plenty of constructed toys to add entertainment - steps up/down, berms etc. Being on the wrong side of 60, we did the blue route keeping to the vehicle track, - very steep and loose surface, but we survived!

The last section down to town involves some single-track and a couple of short carries. Cost for a single ride up was 13 euros each in 2012.
