This campsite is situated in a stunning location sitting at the head of Lake Walenstadt with its own private beach, surrounded by spectacular mountains.
We had pre booked 5 nights at this site (but in the end only stayed 4 nights). Although we had pre-booked, when we turned up on Sunday evening I got the distinct impression that they had no record of our booking (because they don't have clearly defined pitches, I think most people in tents don't prebook). As it happened it didn't cause us any problems.
It's an attractive and well maintained site (although behind the campsite you do have some industrial units, although this didn't bother us). Two thirds of the site consists of static caravans or small lodges, with a field for pitching tents, and space for touring caravans and mobile homes.
One thing we weren't happy with, was that they do not allow you to drive onto the field in order to load & unload your car when pitching/unpitching. If you have a small tent this isn't such a problem, but because we have a Montana 6, it was quite an effort lugging our heavy equipment from the car to the place we decided to pitch the tent - if the weather had been bad it would have been a nightmare. Being able to drive onto the field to load & unload would have helped us a lot, although in fairness to the campsite I could see how this could be a problem if there were lots of tents on the field.
For those camping there is no EHU available. The camping field overlooks the lake, but they have a rule that you cannot pitch a tent within 20 feet of the beach, which I thought was a sensible idea. In the camping area there were free BBQs for people to use, and also several picnic tables, which were very handy.
However there was one major downside about this camping area. Although the location is stunning, you are pitched right next to a very busy road and rail line, and we found the noise from the cars and trains quite intrusive (there seemed to be a train every 5-10 minutes from early in the morning to late at night). In our tent at night it felt at times as though the train was going to run right over the tent - a rather disconcerting feeling!
For the people with caravans and mobile homes, they are pitched a bit further away from the road and railway line, and therefore would not be quite so affected by the noise of the traffic.
Next to the camping area is a small children's play area, which kept our children entertained. Also next to the camping area was two toilets and a sink, although the main wash block was a couple minutes walk on the other side of the site.
The wash block was very clean and well maintained, there are only 3 male showers and 3 female showers, although I never had to wait long to use the shower.
On site there is also a small shop, which sold basic items, including lovely fresh bread rolls in the morning. A few minutes drive into Walenstadt you have bigger supermarkets, including a Lidl & Aldi.
There is no entertainment at night on the site, although we were fortunate to be there for 1st August, the National Swiss day, where we could watch spectacular firework displays all around the lake (including one on the campsite itself), and most spectacular of all, a firework & light display from one of the mountain peaks towering high above Walenstadt.
There is plenty to see and do in the local area, and because you are not far from a motorway, travelling to other areas of Switzerland would be simple (or use the excellent train service).
It was our first time camping in Switzerland, and we did think the campsite was quite pricey, especially considering the amenities on other, but then Switzerland has a reputation for being an expensive country.
There were two things that overshadowed this site for me, first was the fact that you are constantly aware of the noise from the road and railway, and the second was that were were disturbed by other campers (teenagers) on three of the four nights that were were on the site - which was unfortunate - however our other friends who were pitched 50 feet away from us, had no such problems from other campers, so I think we were just unlucky.
